Application of Electricity Market Dynamics to Generation Capacity Expansion Planning in Restructured Power System

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hasani Marzooni, Masoud (Author) ; Hosseini, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, a dynamic decision model based on the system dynamics concept is proposed for the generation capacity expansion planning of restructured power systems. In the market viewpoint framework, both the market players' behaviors and the regulatory rules are considered in the model. Short-term generation dispatch and long-term generation capacity expansion are modeled based on the technical and economical relationships in the electricity market. The proposed model contains ten different modules in order to model the energy market, the regulated incentive mechanisms, profitability assessment of investors, investment decision and capacity expansion. The modules are connected using...

Integrated Planning for Distribution Automation and Network Capacity Expansion

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Heidari, Saeed (Author) ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, Mahmud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Implementing distribution automation system (DAS) in distribution networks needs a huge investment which usually cannot be funded entirely in a short period of time. So distribution companies (DISCOs) should develop long term plans to equip their network with automation technologies as far as economically justifiable. Similarly, DISCOs have network capacity expansion (NCX) plans which specify the scheme of construction of feeders and substations. Since considering DAS may lead to more efficient NCX plans, the planner should revise the NCX plan through the DAS planning. On the other hand, for DAS planning it is necessary to consider a NCX plan as a platform to determine the time and location...

Therefore the planner should simultaneously work on two plans, each of them affects the other. To...

A multi-objective stochastic programming approach for supply chain design considering risk

    , Article International Journal of Production Economics ; Volume 116, Issue 1 , 2008 , Pages 129-138 ; 09255273 (ISSN) Azaron, A ; Brown, K. N ; Tarim, S. A ; Modarres, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we develop a multi-objective stochastic programming approach for supply chain design under uncertainty. Demands, supplies, processing, transportation, shortage and capacity expansion costs are all considered as the uncertain parameters. To develop a robust model, two additional objective functions are added into the traditional comprehensive supply chain design problem. So, our multi-objective model includes (i) the minimization of the sum of current investment costs and the expected future processing, transportation, shortage and capacity expansion costs, (ii) the minimization of the variance of the total cost and (iii) the minimization of the financial risk or the...

Stochastic modeling of the energy supply system with uncertain fuel price - A case of emerging technologies for distributed power generation

    , Article Applied Energy ; Volume 93 , 2012 , Pages 668-674 ; 03062619 (ISSN) Mirkhani, S ; Saboohi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
A deterministic energy supply model with bottom-up structure has limited capability in handling the uncertainties. To enhance the applicability of such a model in an uncertain environment two main issues have been investigated in the present paper. First, a binomial lattice is generated based on the stochastic nature of the source of uncertainty. Second, an energy system model (ESM) has been reformulated as a multistage stochastic problem. The result of the application of the modified energy model encompasses all uncertain outcomes together and enables optimal timing of capacity expansion. The performance of the model has been demonstrated with the help of a case study. The case study has...

Impact of innovation programs on development of energy system: case of Iranian electricity-supply system

    , Article Energy Policy ; Volume 37, Issue 6 , 2009 , Pages 2221-2230 ; 03014215 (ISSN) Shafiei, E ; Saboohi, Y ; Ghofrani, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The paper presents further experiments with an extended version of a comprehensive model for assessment of energy technologies and research and development (R&D) planning to evaluate the impact of innovation programs on development of Iranian electricity-supply system. This analytical instrument is a model of energy R&D resource allocation with an explicit perspective of developing countries which has been linked to a bottom-up energy-systems model. Three emerging electricity generation technologies of solar PV, wind turbine and gas fuel cell are considered in the model and the impact of innovation programs on cost-reducing innovation for them is examined. The main results provided by the...

Dynamic model for market-based capacity investment decision considering stochastic characteristic of wind power

    , Article Renewable Energy ; Volume 36, Issue 8 , August , 2011 , Pages 2205-2219 ; 09601481 (ISSN) Hasani Marzooni, M ; Hosseini, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper proposes a decentralized market-based model for long-term capacity investment decisions in a liberalized electricity market with significant wind power generation. In such an environment, investment and construction decisions are based on price signal feedbacks and imperfect foresight of future conditions in electricity market. System dynamics concepts are used to model structural characteristics of power market such as, long-term firms' behavior and relationships between variables, feedbacks and time delays. For conventional generation units, short-term price feedback for generation dispatching of forward market is implemented as well as long-term price expectation for...
