    , Article Energy Sources, Part A: Recovery, Utilization and Environmental Effects ; Vol. 36, issue. 9 , Dec , 2010 , p. 1007-1017 ; ISSN: 15567036 Shojaadini Ardakany, M ; Shadizadeh, S.R ; Masihi, M ; Kharrat, R ; Ghazanfari, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Capillary pressure is one of the most important parameters for reservoir engineering studies. Although different experimental methods are devised to measure capillary pressure, these methods do not represent the physics of fluid flow, which happens at reservoir conditions. Thus, it is attempted to extract the capillary pressure from spontaneous imbibition data, the common mechanism of oil production in water wet porous media. In this work, a new approach is developed to obtain the imbibition capillary pressure curve by using spontaneous water imbibition data in oil-water-rock systems. Comparison of calculated imbibition capillary pressure curves by the new approach with experimental values...

Investigations on the Effect of Biosurfactants on the Wettability of Carbonate Rocks via Interactions with Rock and Fluid in Ex-Sito MEOR

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Adelzadeh, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Roosta Azad, Reza (Supervisor) ; Kamali, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor) ; Shadizadeh, Reza (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The effects of biosurfactants on sandstone rocks are known in the literature. However, there are few examples of experimental works in Iranian carbonate reservoirs dealing with the effects of biosurfactants under reservoir conditions. This thesis discusses the effect of an efficient biosurfactant produced from Pseudomonas aeroginosa MRo1, a bacterial strain isolated from oil excavation areas in southern Iran, on the recovery of residual oil trapped within carbonate rocks was investigated. The MRO1 could reduce surface tension from 72 to 28 dyne/cm. It also could reduce Interfacial tension from 18.382 to 5.646 dyne/cm.

    Abstract
In this work a glass micromodel which its grains and pores are non-uniform in size shape and distribution is considered as porous medium. A two-dimensional random network modė, of micromodel with non-uniform pores has been constructed. The non-uniformity of porous model is achieved by assigning parametric distribution functions to pores throat and pores length, which was measured using image analysis technique. Statically derived expressions have been used for prediction of macroscopic properties of porous model including: dispersion coefficients, permeability-porosity ratio and capillary pressure. The results confirmed that predicted transport properties are in good agreement with the...

    Abstract
Commonly, capillary pressure-saturation-relative permeability (Pc-S-Kr) relationships are obtained by means of laboratory experiments carried out on soil samples that are up to 10-12 cm long. In obtaining these relationships, it is implicitly assumed that the soil sample is homogeneous. However, it is well known that even at such scales, some micro-heterogeneities may exist. These heterogeneous regions will have distinct multiphase flow properties and will affect saturation and distribution of wetting and non-wetting phases within the soil sample. This, in turn, may affect the measured two-phase flow relationships. In the present work, numerical simulations have been carried out to...

    Abstract
In this paper, results of DNAPL spreading experiments carried out in a geocentrifuge are analysed. The experiments are performed in the GeoDelft geocentrifuge. The experiments investigate the intrusion of a known amount of PCE into a water-saturated soil sample. They are carried out under 12, 15, and 30g conditions. The objectives of these experiments were to assess the potential of geocentrifuge tests for the study of environmental problems, to investigate the effect of acceleration on the spreading of DNAPL, and to determine whether capillary pressure-saturation (Pc-S) curves of soils measured in a geocentrifuge are applicable under 1g conditions. In the present paper, numerical simulation...

Effects of heterogeneities on capillary pressure-saturation-relative permeability relationships

    , Article Journal of Contaminant Hydrology ; Volume 56, Issue 3-4 , 2002 , Pages 175-192 ; 01697722 (ISSN) Ataie Ashtiani, B ; Majid Hassanizadeh, S ; Celia, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In theories of multiphase flow through porous media, capillary pressure-saturation and relative permeability-saturation curves are assumed to be intrinsic properties of the medium. Moreover, relative permeability is assumed to be a scalar property. However, numerous theoretical and experimental works have shown that these basic assumptions may not be valid. For example, relative permeability is known to be affected by the flow velocity (or pressure gradient) at which the measurements are carried out. In this article, it is suggested that the nonuniqueness of capillary pressure-relative permeability-saturation relationships is due to the presence of microheterogeneities within a laboratory...

    Abstract
Computational simulations of two-phase flow in porous media are used to investigate the feasibility of replacing a porous medium containing heterogeneities with an equivalent homogeneous medium. Simulations are performed for the case of infiltration of a dense nonaqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) in a water-saturated, heterogeneous porous medium. For two specific porous media, with periodic and rather simple heterogeneity patterns, the existence of a representative elementary volume (REV) is studied. Upscaled intrinsic permeabilities and upscaled nonlinear constitutive relationships for two-phase flow systems are numerically calculated and the effects of heterogeneities are evaluated. Upscaled...

Investigating the Role of Molecular Diffusion on the Performance of Non-Equilibrium Gas Injection in One of the Fractured Reservoirs in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rigi, Ahmad (Author) ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor) ; Fatemi, Mobin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Major parts of Iran's oil reservoirs are fractured carbonates, which need time to produce oil due to their much lower permeability than sandstone reservoirs. Molecular diffusion mechanism is an efficient mechanism in oil recovery from fractured reservoirs under gas injection conditions. The main subject of this work is to investigate the role of molecular diffusion mechanism in the non-equilibrium gas injection project and its role in increasing the oil recovery rate in two southern fractured reservoirs located in the west of Iran, taking into account the capillary pressure, as well as the change of interfacial tension closely miscible conditions is also investigated through simulation. The...

Immiscible Displacement of a Wetting Fluid by a Non-wetting One at High Capillary Number in a Micro-model Containing a Single Fracture

    , Article Transport in Porous Media ; Volume 94, Issue 1 , 2012 , Pages 289-301 ; 01693913 (ISSN) Kamari, E ; Rashtchian, D ; Shadizadeh, S. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Most reservoirs in Iran are heterogeneous fractured carbonate reservoirs. Heterogeneity causes an earlier breakthrough and an unstable front which leads to a lower recovery. A series of experiments were conducted whereby the distilled water displaced n-Decane in strongly oil-wet glass micro-models containing a single fracture. Experimental data from image analysis of immiscible displacement processes are used to modify the Buckley-Leverett and fractional flow equations by a heterogeneity factor. It is shown that the heterogeneity factor in the modified equations can be expressed as a function of fracture length and orientation

Modeling of capillary pressure in horizontal rough-walled fractures in the presence of liquid bridges

    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Capillary continuity between adjacent matrix blocks through formation of liquid bridge controls the recovery factor of gravity drainage process in fractured reservoirs. However, stability of liquid bridges as well as related capillary pressure in horizontal rough fractures is not well discussed in the available literature. In this work, new models of rough-walled fracture are developed and the role of roughness size and frequency on formation of liquid bridge and fracture capillary pressure are investigated. The Young-Laplace equation is numerically solved to characterize the liquid bridge formed in the proposed models of rough fractures. Critical fracture aperture for a range of liquid...

Drop profile analysis tensiometry under highly dynamic conditions

    Abstract
Profile analysis tensiometry (PAT) is presently the most frequently used technique for measuring surface tensions of liquids. The basis of this methodology is however an equilibrium force balance as given by the Gauss-Laplace equation. Therefore, its application under dynamic conditions, i.e. for growing drops or bubbles, is questionable. We discuss the limits of the applicability of PAT under dynamic conditions by using a growing drop configuration equipped with a high speed video camera. The systems studied are the water/air and water/hexane interface. The obtained "dynamic" drop profiles are analyzed by fitting the classical Gauss-Laplace equation. The results are additionally compared...

Selecting a Surfactant for Wettability Alteration In Iranian Carbonate Reservoirs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zangeneh Var, Alireza (Author) ; Bastani, Daruoosh (Supervisor) ; Badakhshan, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Fractured carbonate reservoirs are mostly oil-wet to intermediate-wet. Due to the negative capillary pressure of the matrix poor spontaneous imbibition of reservoir brine occurs in such reservoirs, and water flooding leads into early break through due to the high conductivity of the fracture network. Some surfactants have the ability to change the wettability of rock matrix toward water-wet state by adsorbing onto the rock surface. The phenomenon can result in spontaneous imbibition improvement and thereby increasing water flooding efficiency and recovery from fractured carbonate reservoirs. In this thesis the effect of some surfactants on the wettability of Iranian carbonate reservoir rocks...

Study of Capillary Pressure Effect on Multiphase Flow in Hydrocarbon Reservoirs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Biglarian, Hassan (Author) ; Taghizadeh Manzari, Mehrdad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most important issues in the petroleum industry, is how to increase the oil production from hydrocarbon reservoirs. The optimum design of an enhanced oil recovery process needs the knowledge on the physical phenomena of the working flow in oil reservoirs. An important aspect of any oil recovery process is the effectiveness of process fluid in removing oil from the rock pores at microscopic scales, in a way that it determines the success or failure of the recovery process. Meanwhile, one of the most important factors on the fluid mobility and as a result the microscopic mobility efficiency is the pressure difference between different phases in narrow paths of porous media. This...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirzaei Paiaman, Abouzar (Author) ; Masihi, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Moghadasi, Jamshid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Aqueous phase trapping (APT) in many of the oil and gas reservoirs is a significant mechanism of formation damage during drilling, completion, work over, and stimulation operation. APT can limit the productivity of the well to a high extent, especially in low permeable gas reservoirs. Experimental investigation of factors affecting APT is vital to recognize extends of associated damage and contribution of each factor. Albeit many experimental studies have been conducted as regards factors affecting removal of phase traps in understudy mechanism of formation damage, but up to date no experimental data has been published regarding effect of different factors on reservoir’s potential for APT....

Experimental and Modeling Study of Controlled Salinity Water Injection for Enhanced Oil Recovery from one of Iranial Oil Reservoirs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shojaei, Mohammad Javad (Author) ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor) ; Masihi, Mohsen (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
From previous years, water injection was considered as one of the most common methods for enhanced oil recovery. But recently much attention has been paid on the use of low salinity water (LSW) as an enhanced oil recovery fluid. The main mechanism that causes improve oil recovery is wettability alteration to a more water wet state. The change observed in recovery factor during LSW flooding induced from changes in relative permeability and capillary pressure when different levels of salinity are used. However, a few researchers tried to evaluate how macroscopic flow functions depend on the salinity of injected water. To this end, a series oil displacements by water performed on sandstone rock...

An Experimental Study of Oil Production under Spontaneous Co-current Imbibition and Effective Parameters Influencing the Process in Low IFT

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hamidpour, Esmaeil (Author) ; Massihi, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Capillary Imbibition is an important mechanism in producing oil from matrix blocks in fractured reservoirs. In a water-wet fractured reservoir, if the rise of water level in fracture is in a way that at all the moments the water front in fracture is lower than that in the matrix block we expect co-current imbibition. Iranian reservoirs have large matrix blocks and co-current imbibition can be expectable. Till this time, not many investigations have been done on co-current imbibition in and out of our country, Iran. In this thesis, an experimental investigation on co-current imbibition will be done for different conditions. The main goal of this thesis is the study of co-current imbibition in...

Pore-scale Simulation of Trapping Phenomena and Hysteresis Effect in Porous Media

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tabibnejad Azizi, Mehdi (Author) ; Fatemi, Mobeen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
So far, many studies have been carried out on the core-scale regarding the effects of hysteresis on the macro-scale properties of systems including fluids and porous rock, however, many issues related to the physics of the problem (especially regarding the way fluids are distributed and the trapping of the non-wetting phase) at the pore-scale need further investigation. In the process of multiphase fluid flow in porous media, hysteresis refers to the dependence of the results of the fluids’ displacements on the history of fluid saturation and the direction of saturation changes (increasing or decreasing). The first step to investigate the hysteresis effect is to determine the amount of fluid...

A new scaling relationship for water imbibition into the matrix: Considering fracture flow

    , Article Energy Sources, Part A: Recovery, Utilization and Environmental Effects ; Vol. 36, issue. 12 , Dec , 2010 , p. 1267-1275 ; ISSN: 15567036 Ardakany, M. S ; Shadizadeh, S. R ; Masihi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Spontaneous imbibition of water into the matrix is the most important mechanism for oil recovery in water wet fractured porous media. If the water is in contact with matrix and it is not flowing, the process is called static imbibition. The effect of rock and fluid properties, and boundary conditions on static imbibition are studied and formulated for scaling of the laboratory data to the reservoir scale. In reality, there is a continuous flow in a fracture; incorporating the effect of fracture flow into the scaling formulations is an unresolved issue in the modeling of the capillary imbibition recovery from the matrix. In this article, a new mathematical equation is developed to scale...
