    , Article Progress in Materials Science ; Volume 90 , 2017 , Pages 276-324 ; 00796425 (ISSN) Azarniya, A ; Azarniya, A ; Sovizi, S ; Madaah Hosseini, H. R ; Varol, T ; Kawasaki, A ; Ramakrishna, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The technological and industrial needs for development of fully dense nanocomposites have led to significant advances in spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique and its enhanced forms. This technique has opened up a new prospect over carbon nanotube (CNT)-metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) with superior physical or mechanical characteristics. To date, a large number of authentic papers have been published over this ongoing field, but have not been comprehensively reviewed. The pertinent research works cover some significant aspects of CNT-MMNCs requiring a concise review on (i) the potential phase transformations of pure CNTs and microstructure evolution; (ii) the novel approaches for...

    , Article 2008 Proceedings of the ASME - 2nd International Conference on Integration and Commercialization of Micro and Nanosystems, MicroNano 2008, 3 June 2008 through 5 June 2008, Kowloon ; 2008 , Pages 343-351 ; 0791842940 (ISBN); 9780791842942 (ISBN) Momeni, K ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The stress distribution on open-ended Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) embedded in a composite material is considered in this work and an analytical solution for the stress distribution has been obtained. The effects of CNT's thickness and CNT's length on the distribution of stress have been investigated. To find the governing relations, continuity equations of the axisymmetric problem in cylindrical coordinate (r,o,z) are used. Under some assumptions, the governing equations are solved and by using constitutive equations and applying the boundary conditions, an equation which relates the stress applied to the representative volume element with the stress distribution on the CNT, has been found. The...

An investigation on the structural characteristics and reinforcement of melt processed polyamide 66/multiwalled carbon nanotube composites

    , Article Polymers for Advanced Technologies ; Vol. 25, issue. 4 , 2014 , pp. 406-417 ; ISSN: 10427147 Shojaei, A ; Nourbakhsh, P ; Faghihi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Properties of melt processed polyamide 66 (PA66)/multiwalled carbon nanotube composite were first characterized experimentally. The experimental results exhibited the formation of crystalline layer around the nanotubes and a considerable enhancement in mechanical properties by incorporation of multiwalled carbon nanotube up to 1 wt%. Mechanical properties were analyzed in terms of structural parameters using micromechanical models proposed in this study. It was suggested that the mechanical properties were greatly dominated by crystalline layer and nanotube length. It was also deduced that the melt mixing process caused a significant nanotube breakage restricting further enhancement of...

Polymer/nanodiamond composites - a comprehensive review from synthesis and fabrication to properties and applications

    , Article Advances in Colloid and Interface Science ; Volume 269 , 2019 , Pages 122-151 ; 00018686 (ISSN) Karami, P ; Salkhi Khasraghi, S ; Hashemi, M ; Rabiei, S ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Nanodiamond (ND)is an allotrope of carbon nanomaterials which exhibits many outstanding physical, mechanical, thermal, optical and biocompatibility characteristics. Meanwhile, ND particles possess unique spherical shape containing diamond-like structure at the core with graphitic carbon outer shell which intuitively contains many oxygen-containing functional groups at the outer surface. Such superior properties and unique structural morphology of NDs are essentially attractive to develop polymer composites with multifunctional properties. However, despite a long history from the discovery of NDs, which is dated back to the1960s, this nanoparticle has been less explored in the field of...

Investigation of the electrochemical behavior of tizanidine on the surface of glassy carbon electrode modified with multi-walled carbon nanotube/titan yellow–doped polypyrrole

    , Article Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry ; Volume 823 , 2018 , Pages 146-154 ; 15726657 (ISSN) Shahrokhian, S ; Shamloofard, M ; Salimian, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The present paper describes a voltammetric sensor based on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified with a thin film of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) coated with an electro-polymerized layer of titan yellow-doped over–oxidized polypyrrole (OPPY) for the determination of tizanidine (TIZ). A significant enhancement was observed in the anodic peak current of TIZ on the surface of OPPY/CNT/GCE, relative to the bare, CNT- and OPPY-coated GCEs. The microscopic structure and surface morphology of the composite film was thoroughly characterized by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques. The effect of various...

    Abstract
In this study, magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles are incorporated on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to reinforce Mg-3Zn-1Mn alloy (ZM31 alloy) by semi-powder metallurgy, followed by hot extrusion, with the purpose of improving the mechanical and biological properties of Mg-based alloy. The microstructural analysis of the nanocomposites indicated a reduction in grain size of Mg alloy with the incorporation of CNTs with a maximum reduction of 61% (ZM31/CNTs), with further reduction in grain size (68%) detected when MgO integrated CNTs composites (ZM31/MgO-CNTs). The compression characteristics of the composites indicate an increase in ultimate compressive strength of 36% and 44%, respectively, with...

Electrochemical preparation of over-oxidized polypyrrole/multi-walled carbon nanotube composite on glassy carbon electrode and its application in epinephrine determination

    , Article Electrochimica Acta ; Volume 57, Issue 1 , 2011 , Pages 132-138 ; 00134686 (ISSN) Shahrokhian, S ; Saberi, R. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A composite film constructed of surfactant doped over-oxidized polypyrrole and multi-walled carbon nanotube was prepared on the surface of glassy carbon electrode by the electro-polymerization method. Surface characterization of the modified electrode was performed by scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectrometry. The investigations have been proved that the over-oxidation of the modifier film resulted in a porous thin layer that improves the interlayer diffusion mechanism for the electroactive species. On the other hand, the negative charge density on the surface of the electrode excludes the negative analytes (e.g. ascorbate and Fe(CN)63?/4?)...

Electrocatalytic determination of sumatriptan on the surface of carbon-paste electrode modified with a composite of cobalt/Schiff-base complex and carbon nanotube

    , Article Bioelectrochemistry ; Volume 81, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 81-85 ; 15675394 (ISSN) Amiri, M ; Pakdel, Z ; Bezaatpour, A ; Shahrokhian, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The electrochemical oxidation of sumatriptan on the surface of carbon paste electrode modified with multi-walled carbon nanotube and cobalt methyl-salophen complex is studied by using cyclic voltammetry and polarization studies. The results indicate that the drug is irreversibly oxidized in a one electron oxidation mechanism. It was found that the peak potential shifted negatively with increasing pH, confirms that H + participate in the oxidation process. The electrode is shown to be very effective for the detection of sumatriptan in the presence of other biological reductant compounds. The prepared modified electrode exhibits a very good resolution between the voltammetric peaks of...
