Convective stability of carbon sequestration in anisotropic porous media

    , Article Proceedings of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences ; Vol. 470, Issue. 2170 , 2014 ; ISSN: 13645021 Hill, A. A ; Morad, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The stability of convection in an anisotropic porous medium, where the solute concentration is assumed to decay via a first-order chemical reaction, is studied. This is a simplified model for the interactions between carbon dioxide and brine in underground aquifers; the instability of which is essential in reducing reservoir mixing times. The key purpose of this paper is to explore the role porous media anisotropy plays in convective instabilities. It is shown that varying the ratio of horizontal to vertical solutal diffusivites does not significantly affect the behaviour of the instability. This is also the case for changes of permeability when the diffusion rate dominates the solute...

Coupled optimization of enhanced gas recovery and carbon dioxide sequestration in natural gas reservoirs: Case study in a real gas field in the south of Iran

    , Article International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control ; Volume 17 , 2013 , Pages 515-522 ; 17505836 (ISSN) Zangeneh, H ; Jamshidi, S ; Soltanieh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Since the beginning of industrial age the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases has been increased significantly due to excessive use of fossil fuels. An effective way for decreasing emission of greenhouse gases is injection of CO2 in geological formations. Moreover, from the reservoir engineering point of view, CO2 injection has been considered as a method of enhancing oil and gas recovery. While using CO2 for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) has been the subject of several studies in the past decades, enhanced gas recovery (EGR) has not been fully studied in the gas reservoirs, mainly because of high recovery factor of gas reservoirs and mixing of the reservoir gas and CO2. In this...

    Abstract
An integrated hydrogen and power co-generation system with CO2 capture has been proposed and evaluated techno-economically. The proposed system is an alternative low cost clean power generation while supplying hydrogen for process plants. The baseline configuration has been designed based on the literature. Different cases are simulated in Aspen Plus and are evaluated economically. Thermodynamic models have been validated against the results of previous publications. The co-generation system with different product shares of hydrogen and power has been compared with CO2 captured and CO2-vented hydrogen plants by means of defined techno-economic-environmental indicators. Sensitivity analysis...

Effect of CO2 and crude oil type on the dynamic interfacial tension of crude oil/carbonated water at different operational conditions

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 170 , 2018 , Pages 576-581 ; 09204105 (ISSN) Lashkarbolooki, M ; Riazi, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Concerns about climate change have persuaded the researchers to examine CO2 injection in the form of carbonated water (CW) into oil reservoir as a safe and effective CO2 storage and enhanced oil recovery process. Although interfacial tension (IFT) between crude oil and injected fluid has a vital role on the displacement of fluids in porous media, the effect of CO2 and crude oil type on the dynamic IFT of crude oil under different operational conditions is not well understood. Accordingly, this study was carried out to assess the effects of temperature, pressure, crude oil type and CO2 on the dynamic IFT of crude oil/CW. To achieve this goal, two types of crude oil were provided from southern...

Effect of gas impurity on the convective dissolution of CO2 in porous media

    , Article Energy ; Volume 199 , May , 2020 Mahmoodpour, S ; Amooie, M. A ; Rostami, B ; Bahrami, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Growing needs for energy and the essential role of fossil fuels in energy market require attempts such as carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration in saline aquifers to stabilize and mitigate atmospheric carbon concentrations. The possibility of co-injection of impurities along with CO2 allows for the direct disposal of flue gas and hence a significant reduction in the cost of CO2 sequestration projects by eliminating the separation process. In this study, the results of series of novel experiments in a high-pressure visual porous cell are reported, which allow for visually and quantitatively examining the dynamics of convective dissolution in brine-saturated porous media in the presence of an...

Convective-reactive transport of dissolved CO2 in fractured-geological formations

    Abstract
Carbon dioxide (CO2) storage in geologic formations is an attractive means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The main processes controlling the migration of CO2 in geological formations are related to convective mixing and geochemical reactions. The effects of heterogeneity on these coupled processes have been widely discussed in the literature. Recently, special attention has been devoted to fractured geological formations that can be found in several storage reservoirs. However, existing studies on the effect of fractures on the fate of CO2 neglect the key processes of geochemical reactions. This work aims at addressing this gap. Based on numerical simulations of a hypothetical...

An extended-fem model for co2 leakage through a naturally fractured cap-rock during carbon dioxide sequestration

    , Article Transport in Porous Media ; Volume 145, Issue 1 , 2022 , Pages 175-195 ; 01693913 (ISSN) Khoei, A. R ; Ehsani, R ; Hosseini, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a numerical model is developed for the assessment of carbon dioxide transport through naturally fractured cap-rocks during CO2 sequestration in underground aquifers. The cap-rock contains two types of fracture with different length scales: micro-cracks (fissures) and macro-cracks (faults). The effect of micro-cracks is incorporated implicitly by modifying the intrinsic permeability tensor of porous matrix, while the macro-cracks are modeled explicitly using the extended finite element method (X-FEM). The fractured porous medium is decomposed into the porous matrix and fracture domain, which are occupied with two immiscible fluid phases, water and CO2. The flow inside the...

Effect of permeability heterogeneity on the dissolution process during carbon dioxide sequestration in saline aquifers: two-and three-dimensional structures

    Abstract
Abstract: The convection–diffusion process of carbon dioxide (CO2) dissolution in a saline reservoir is investigated to shed light on the effects of the permeability heterogeneity. Using sequential Gaussian simulation method, random permeability fields in two and three-dimension (2D and 3D) structures are generated. Quantitative (average amount of the dissolved CO2 and dissolution flux) and qualitative (pattern of the dissolved CO2 and velocity streamlines) measurements are used to investigate the results. A 3D structure shows a slightly higher dissolution flux than a 2D structure in the homogeneous condition. Results in the random permeability fields in 2D indicates an increase in the...

An oxy-fuel combustion carbon capture method is considered in large scale Matiant power plant based on utilization of oxygen from water electrolysis unit. Technical and economical analysis of the proposed system shows that when the price of natural gas is 7.8US$/GJ, the total CO 2 avoided cost is 93US$/(tonne of CO 2) and...

Investigation of oil recovery and CO2 storage during secondary and tertiary injection of carbonated water in an Iranian carbonate oil reservoir

    , Article Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering ; Volume 137 , 2016 , Pages 134-143 ; 09204105 (ISSN) Shakiba, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Riazi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Gas injection process for more oil recovery and in particular CO2 injection is well-established method to increment oil recovery from underground oil reservoirs. CO2 sequestration which takes place during this enhanced oil recovery (EOR) method has positive impact on reducing the greenhouse gas emission which causes global warming. Direct gas injection into depleted oil reservoirs, encounters several shortcomings such as low volumetric sweep efficiency, early breakthrough (BT) and high risk of gas leakage in naturally fractured carbonate oil reservoirs. Carbonated water injection (CWI) has been recently proposed as an alternative method to alleviate the problems associated with gas...
