Partially hydrolyzed crosslinked alginate-graff-polymethacrylamide as a novel biopolymer-based superabsorbent hydrogel having pH-responsive properties

    Abstract
In this study, a series of highly swelling hydrogels based on sodium alginate (NaAlg) and polymethacrylamide (PMAM) was prepared through free radical polymerization. The graft copolymerization reaction was performed in a homogeneous medium and in the presence of ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator and N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. The crosslinked graft copolymer, alginate-graft-polymethacrylamide (Alg-g-PMAM), was then partially hydrolyzed by NaOH solution to yield a hydrogel, hydrolyzed alginate-graft-polymethacrylamide (H-Alg-g-PMAM). During alkaline hydrolysis, the carboxamide groups of Alg-g-PMAM were converted into hydrophilic carboxylate anions. Either the...

QSAR study of heparanase inhibitors activity using artificial neural networks and Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm

    , Article European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry ; Volume 43, Issue 3 , 2008 , Pages 548-556 ; 02235234 (ISSN) Jalali Heravi, M ; Asadollahi Baboli, M ; Shahbazikhah, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
A linear and non-linear quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) study is presented for modeling and predicting heparanase inhibitors' activity. A data set that consisted of 92 derivatives of 2,3-dihydro-1,3-dioxo-1H-isoindole-5-carboxylic acid, furanyl-1,3-thiazol-2-yl and benzoxazol-5-yl acetic acids is used in this study. Among a large number of descriptors, four parameters classified as physico-chemical, topological and electronic indices are chosen using stepwise multiple regression technique. The artificial neural networks (ANNs) model shows superiority over the multiple linear regressions (MLR) by accounting 87.9% of the variances of antiviral potency of the heparanase...

Silane functionalization of nanodiamond for polymer nanocomposites-effect of degree of silanization

    , Article Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects ; Volume 506 , 2016 , Pages 254-263 ; 09277757 (ISSN) Hajiali, F ; Shojaei, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2016
    Abstract
The silanization of nanodiamond (ND) was successfully carried out by using the esterification reaction of hydrolyzed vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTS) in alcoholic solution. The surface carboxylic group of ND was first enhanced by thermal oxidation to increase the degree of esterification reaction. The extent of silane functionalization of ND was controlled by varying the weight ratio of VTS and oxidized ND (oxND), from 2:1 to 10:1 (w/w) in the functionalization reaction medium. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed that the highest degree of silanization occurred at VTS/oxND of 5:1 (w/w), while more silane concentrations resulted in...

Extraction of hydroxyapatite nanostructures from marine wastes for the fabrication of biopolymer-based porous scaffolds

    Abstract
Three-dimensional porous nanocomposites consisting of gelatin-carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) cross-linked by carboxylic acids biopolymers and monophasic hydroxyapatite (HA) nanostructures were fabricated by lyophilization, for soft-bone-tissue engineering. The bioactive ceramic nanostructures were prepared by a novel wet-chemical and low-temperature procedure from marine wastes containing calcium carbonates. The effect of surface-active molecules, including sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), on the morphology of HA nanostructures is shown. It is demonstrated that highly bioactive and monophasic HA nanorods with an aspect ratio > 10 can be synthesized in...

Degradation of phenanthrene and anthracene by Nocardia otitidiscaviarum strain TSH1, a moderately thermophilic bacterium

    2008
    Abstract
Aims: The metabolism of phenanthrene and anthracene by a moderate thermophilic Nocardia otitidiscaviarum strain TSH1 was examined. Methods and Results: When strain TSH1 was grown in the presence of anthracene, four metabolites were identified as 1,2-dihydroxy-1,2-dihydroanthracene, 3-(2-carboxyvinyl)naphthalene-2-carboxylic acid, 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene and benzoic acid using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), reverse phase-high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Degradation studies with phenanthrene revealed 2,2′-diphenic acid, phthalic acid, 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, o-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, benzoic acid, a phenanthrene...

Quantitative structure - Mobility relationship study of a diverse set of organic acids using classification and regression trees and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems

    , Article Electrophoresis ; Volume 29, Issue 2 , 2008 , Pages 363-374 ; 01730835 (ISSN) Jalali Heravi, M ; Shahbazikhah, P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A quantitative structure-mobility relationship was developed to accurately predict the electrophoretic mobility of organic acids. The absolute electrophoretic mobilities (μ0) of a diverse dataset consisting of 115 carboxylic and sulfonic acids were investigated. A set of 1195 zero- to three-dimensional descriptors representing various structural characteristics was calculated for each molecule in the dataset. Classification and regression trees were successfully used as a descriptor selection method. Four descriptors were selected and used as inputs for adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system. The root mean square errors for the calibration and prediction sets are 1.61 and 2.27, respectively,...
