    A strain gradient based yield criterion

    Abstract
    The classical yield criteria do not describe the yield size-dependency that has been observed in micro-scale structures (Fleck, Muller, Ashby, & Hutchinson, 1994; Stolken and Evans 1998; Moreau et al. 2005), and may also significantly underestimate the yield loads of structures at micron and sub-micron scales (Son, Jeong, & Kwon, 2003; Liu et al., 2013). The present paper suggests a specific size-dependent yield criterion based on the strain gradient theory that is aimed at addressing this inadequacy.     Abstract
    In this paper, the modified couple stress theory is employed to develop a size-dependent beam element able to predict the size-dependency observed in microbeams. The stiffness matrix is obtained for the aforementioned beam element. As an example, the deflection of a microcantilever is evaluated using the proposed beam elements and the results of the finite element method are compared to the analytical results obtained by the classical beam theory. The maximum deflection of the beam is depicted versus the ratio of the beam thickness to the material length scale parameter, the parameter appearing in non-classical continuum theories.     The elastic behavior of an edge dislocation, which is positioned outside of a nanoscale elliptical inhomogeneity, is studied within the interface elasticity approach incorporating the elastic moduli and surface tension of the interface. The complex potential function method is used. The dislocation stress field and the image force acting on the dislocation are found and analyzed in detail.     Abstract
    In this paper, a size-dependent Timoshenko beam is developed on the basis of the couple stress theory. The couple stress theory is a non-classic continuum theory capable of capturing the small-scale size effects on the mechanical behavior of structures, while the classical continuum theory is unable to predict the mechanical behavior accurately when the characteristic size of structures is close to the material length scale parameter.     In this work, a new model based on the multilayer adsorption kinetic mechanism and four material balance equations for oil, asphaltene, gas, and water phase has been developed to account for asphaltene deposition in porous media under dynamic conditions and the model was verified using experimental data obtained in this work and also with those reported in the literature. The results showed that the developed model based on multilayer adsorption kinetic mechanism can correlate more accurately the oil flooding experimental data in comparison to the previous models based on the mechanical plugging mechanism, in particular in carbonate core samples.
