, Article IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology ; Vol. 63, issue. 7 , September , 2014 , p. 3028-3037 ; ISSN: 189545 ; Abbaspour, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Societal concerns over global warming issues and dependence on fossil fuels have caused the vehicle market share of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) to grow. A large penetration of PHEVs, however, would likely put higher stress on power systems. To lessen the PHEVs' harmful impacts on the distribution grid, this paper proposes a two-stage charging control strategy modeled on a renewable-based energy hub. In the first stage, a home-based charging control method is formulated in which the charging cost of PHEVs is considered as an objective. Running this procedure by PHEV schedulers in houses, in the second stage of the proposed strategy, the PHEV coordinator agent (PCA) applies a...

Abstract
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology provides one of the most promising solutions to tackle the threatening challenges such as air pollution in urban areas. Dramatic increases in the number of PHEVs could have major impacts on power system operations because of their high electricity demand. From the distribution system operator facet, distribution system congestion during PHEVs charging is an economic and security concern. It is, therefore, necessary to investigate the effects of widespread using of PHEVs on the performance of distribution networks. In this paper, PHEV characteristics are exactly studied and a comprehensive model for investigation of PHEV impacts is achieved....

Abstract
This paper investigates the main features of the PHEV centralized and decentralized charging control mechanisms, their requirements and also impacts on distribution system performance. A home-based charging control scenario as well as a coordinated charging control algorithm for the charging management of PHEVs is devised in this paper. Both the owner preferences and system operator concerns are taken into consideration in an optimization-based framework. The total network losses and charging costs are set as the constraints to the proposed optimization approach. Various aspects of the two mechanisms are discussed and comprehensively compared by their application on the IEEE 34-bus test...

Designing the Structure of a PHEV Aggregator in Multi-Carrier Energy Environment
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor) ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Large penetration of electric vehicles and distributed generation (DG) resources in upcoming years will change the future vision of distribution networks from some passive load points into active ones. The imposed load of electric vehicles charging has caused many new challenges in operation and planning studies of distribution network. In contrast, the abilities of electric vehicles in feeding back power into the network (V2G programs) has attracted attention from grid operators and also vehicles owners. So, the problem of managing charging and discharging behaviors of electric vehicles has been introduced as a hot research topic in recent year. This dissertation as the first effort in this...
PHEVs Charging Control from Customer Point of View Considering Vehicle to Home Capability
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fotuhi Firouzabad, Mahmud (Supervisor)
Abstract
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) present environmental and energy security advantages versus conventional gasoline vehicles. In the near future, the number of PHEVs will likely grow significantly in the world. In spite of the aforementioned advantages, the connection of PHEVs to the power grid may create a series of new challenges for electric utilities. If PHEV penetration exceeds a certain amount it can endanger power system security. In this research, a new charging control scheme which includes both the customer and grid acquiescence is presented. Optimal charging algorithm is developed which minimizes the electrical charging payment of customers. The optimization problem in this...

Abstract
Proliferation of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and integration of various distributed generation (DG) technologies have been recognized to play an undeniable role in modern power systems of the future. In order to effectively model the interactions of these two technologies, this paper develops a multi-criteria framework to coordinate the charging behaviors of PHEVs within an energy hub platform. In this regard, the desirable charging profiles from the viewpoint of both PHEV owners and hub manager are first captured and reported to the PHEVs Coordinator Entity (PCE). The PCE, then, runs an optimization framework in which several criteria including the PHEV owners’ convenience,...
Design and Implementation of a Soft Switched Bidirectional Charger for Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) Applications
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Tahami, farzad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Due to the growing oil price and environmental considerations, tendency to use local and environmentally friendly energy sources has increased.Bidirectional transmission can be one of the key features of the smart grid,so the use of car battery connected to the grid as local energy sources makes sense. This can provide network stability, especially during peak load times. Vehicles connected to grid (V2G) is an electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid electric vehicles can delivered the electricity to the grid. These systems require either two separate power electronic converters can be used for transmission in either directions or a two-way transfer charger. The aim of this project is to design...
Optimal Charge Scheduling of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles to Improve Distribution System Operatoion
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, Mahmood (Supervisor)
Abstract
Despite the economic and environmental advantages of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), the increased utilization of PHEVs brings up new concerns for power distribution system operators and planners. Impacts of PHEVs on distribution network, although has been proven to be noticeable, has not been completely investigated for future years. Thus, it is necessary to study precisely PHEV impacts on residential distribution systems and then try to find a method to control PHEV charging in order to improve distribution system. In this thesis, a comprehensive model is proposed to study PHEV impacts on residential distribution systems for short and long-term simulations. To do this, at first...

Abstract
Nowadays, due to the rapid growth of electric energy consumption at the distribution network level and the environmental problems caused by conventional generation units, it has become necessary to provide appropriate solutions to increase the penetration of renewable energy sources and optimally manage the consumers/prosumers at the demand side of power systems. In recent years, various methods have been proposed for demand-side energy management models and distributed energy resources (DERs) integration into the distribution network. Amongst them, the transactive coordination approach that employs the economic and control mechanisms for the management of DERs and responsive loads has been...

Abstract
Nanoscale Shielded channel transistors are investigated by solving the two-dimensional Poisson equation self-consistently with ballistic quantum transport equations for first time. We present self-consistent solutions of ultrathin body device structures to investigate the effect of electrically shielded channel region which impose charge controlling in the channel region on the characteristics of nanoscale DG-MOSFET. The simulation method is based on Nonequlibrium Green's Function (NEGF). Starting from a basic structure with a gate length of 10 nm, the effect of gate length variation on the performance of the device has been investigated. © 2007 IEEE
