    Abstract
Recycling of wastepaper is an effective way to achieve the sustainable paper manufacturing regarding sustainable development goals. Focusing on the mixed wastepaper sorting, recovery of suitable papers for deinking purpose and minimizing the impurities were developed in this study. In a wastepaper sorting process, each equipment has its own role in increasing recycling performance. In this study, disc screen was applied and evaluated for sorting of the mixed wastepaper considering independent variables such as inclination, velocity and moisture content. Response surface method was applied for design of the experiments. Sorting efficiency of 100% was achieved in two conditions: 1–20%...

A dynamic decision support system for sustainable supplier selection in circular economy

    Abstract
Supplier selection is an important and challenging problem in sustainable supply chain management. We propose a dynamic decision support system (DSS) for sustainable supplier selection in circular supply chains. Unlike the linear take-make-waste-dispose production systems, circular supply chains are nonlinear make-waste-recycle production systems with zero-waste vision. The proposed DSS allows users to customize and weight their economic, social, and circular criteria with a fuzzy best-worst method (BWM) and select the most suitable supplier with the fuzzy inference system (FIS). Machine learning is used to maintain and synthesize the criteria scores for the suppliers after each supplier...

Circular economy adoption barriers: An extended fuzzy best–worst method using fuzzy DEMATEL and Supermatrix structure

    , Article Business Strategy and the Environment ; Volume 31, Issue 4 , 2022 , Pages 1566-1586 ; 09644733 (ISSN) Govindan, K ; Khalili Nasr, A ; Karimi, F ; Mina, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In the real world, there are complex decision-making problems in which a variety of intertwined factors and hierarchical structures exist, and it is difficult or impossible to solve these problems using classical methods. The prioritization of circular economy (CE) adoption barriers is one such complex problem that cannot be solved using current classical methods. Hence, in this paper, for the first time, a new method, namely, FBWDS, is developed. FBWDS derives from the combination of fuzzy best–worst method (BWM), fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL), and Supermatrix structure. This proposed method establishes weights of the intertwined factors in hierarchical...

Developing an Integrated Model of Management of Energy-Water Nexus in Industrial Ecosystems based on the Concept of Circular Economy(Case Study: South Pars Region)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nazari, Erfan (Author) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to plan an industrial system, over a period of 10 years, so that over time, while supplying the required demand, to optimal resource utilization with regard to material reuse and recovery flows of losses as well as the use of renewable resources move to implement the concept of a circular economy. One of the main incentives for the transition to a circular economy is carbon tax policy, which has been taken into account. The results of the decision-making model based on cost and flow constraints indicate that the use of carbon dioxide as a by-product of Pars Petrochemical Extraction Unit in order to produce urea in Pardis petrochemical industry in addition...

Developing a Model to Assess Waste Recycling and Its Impact on Energy and Environmen

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Kolagar, Mina (Author) ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The reaction of human societies with environmental limitations such as climate change and the prospect of limited mineral resources has led to the introduction of approaches such as circular economy. The implementation of circular economy requires the development of new assessment methods, technology development and planning. Even though in the economic theories of optimizing the extraction of exhaustible resources such as fossil fuel resources, methods are used to determine the optimal path of resource use, but the optimization of the return flow is less evaluated. In this research, the optimal material circulation model is developed based on material flow analysis and life cycle costing...

Improvement of Industrial Symbiosis Between Greenhouses and Industrial Waste Heat Sources by Employing Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC)

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadpour, Mehran (Author) ; Roshandel, Ramin (Supervisor) ; Shafii, Mohammad Behshad (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
The water crisis caused by climate change and anthropogenic activities in Iran has affected the daily lives of the people, and since the agricultural sector has a large share of water consumption, greenhouse cultivation and indoor farming has been developing in this country, to improve water productivity. Considering that the main source of energy supply in greenhouses is fossil fuels, in this work, the possibility of improving Industrial Symbiosis (IS) between greenhouses and waste heat sources in industries by employing the Organic Rankin Cycle (ORC) has been studied, in order to meet the heating demand of greenhouses in a more sustainable and eco-friendly way.Based on that, by modeling...

Prioritizing barriers to adopt circular economy in construction and demolition waste management

    , Article Resources, Conservation and Recycling ; Volume 134 , 2018 , Pages 216-227 ; 09213449 (ISSN) Mahpour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2018
    Abstract
Construction and demolition (C&D) waste dreadful impacts increasingly cause public concerns. Aiming to boost resource exploitation efficiency, circular economy is contemplated a pertinent C&D waste management practice. However, transitioning to circular economy in C&D waste management is hindered by barriers which are to be found and overcome to adeptly handle this kind of waste. In this paper 22 potential crisp barriers are identified through reviewing the seminal literature which could be categorized under three dimensions of behavioral, technical, and legal. Six experts in behavioral, technical, and legal sciences working in sustainable C&D projects were asked to rate the dimensions and...

Building circularity as a measure of sustainability in the old and modern architecture: A case study of architecture development in the hot and dry climate

    , Article Energy and Buildings ; Volume 275 , 2022 ; 03787788 (ISSN) Hosseini Honarvar, S. M ; Golabchi, M ; Bararzadeh Ledari, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Nowadays, the construction industry has turned to the consumption of large amounts of natural resources in line with global population growth, which has led to the shortage of resources, and consequently increases in the construction debris; therefore, the present article has studied the positive and negative points of the architectural development process. The results have indicated that being compared to the former architecture; the development of architecture has reduced energy consumption by 78%. Hence, the scarcity of virgin resources and consequently the increase of environmental effects such as Global Warming Potential (GWP) have been measured based on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)....
