Error correction via smoothed L0-norm recovery

    , Article IEEE Workshop on Statistical Signal Processing Proceedings, 28 June 2011 through 30 June 2011 ; June , 2011 , Pages 289-292 ; 9781457705700 (ISBN) Ashkiani, S ; Babaie Zadeh, M ; Jutten, C ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Channel coding has been considered as a classical approach to overcome corruptions occurring in some elements of input signal which may lead to loss of some information. Proper redundancies are added to the input signal to improve the capability of detecting or even correcting the corrupted signal. A similar scenario may happen dealing with real-field numbers rather than finite-fields. This paper considers a way to reconstruct an exact version of a corrupted signal by using an encoded signal with proper number of redundancies. The proposed algorithm uses Graduated Non-Convexity method beside using a smoothed function instead of 0-norm to correct all the corrupted elements. Simulations show...

An atomistic based model for interacting crack and inhomogeneity in fcc metals under polynomial loading

    , Article 12th International Conference on Fracture 2009, ICF-12, 12 July 2009 through 17 July 2009, Ottawa, ON ; Volume 5 , 2009 , Pages 3597-3605 ; 9781617382277 (ISBN) Shodja, H. M ; Tehranchi, A ; Ghassemi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Classical continuum mechanics fails to give accurate solution near the crack tip, moreover, it implies that a solid is able to sustain an infinite stress at the Griffith-Inglis crack tips. Among other critical issues is the inability of the classical approach to sense the size effect. For these reasons, for more in-depth understandings and accurate behavioral predictions, it is essential to develop some atomistic methods which properly accounts, not only for the structure but also the long and short range atomic interactions effectively. In this work the interaction of inhomogeneity and crack under polynomial loading is simulated by using the many body Rafii-Tabar and Sutton potential...

Development of grid resource discovery service based on semantic information

    Abstract
Grid computing is a type of parallel and distributed system that provides the possibility of sharing, choosing and collecting the autonomous resources (such as computer, software, databases, and equipments) that are distributed geographically. Resource discovery is one of the key subjects in distributed systems and especially Grids. We should consider that Grid consists of different applications that each of them consist of different hardware and software resources, therefore recognizing these resources is important in a Grid system. Classical approaches to Grid resource discovery are either centralized or hierarchical [1] (and will maybe prove inefficient as the scale of Grid systems...

Optimisation of energy-efficient greenhouses based on an integrated energy demand-yield production model

    , Article Biosystems Engineering ; Volume 202 , February , 2021 , Pages 1-15 ; 15375110 (ISSN) Golzar, F ; Heeren, N ; Hellweg, S ; Roshandel, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The aim of this paper is to develop a simulation framework to minimise the cost associated with commercial greenhouse yields (production cost). Greenhouse energy demand and yield production models are coupled with a cost model to investigate the interaction between energy consumption costs and yield production benefits. The coupled model is defined as an optimisation problem to determine the optimal values of decision variables (e.g. cover material, heating and cooling technology, inside temperature and relative humidity set points, plant density, etc.), which result in minimum production cost as the objective function. The results show that the integrated energy demand-crop yield production...

Formulation of soil angle of shearing resistance using a hybrid GP and OLS method

    , Article Engineering with Computers ; Volume 29, Issue 1 , September , 2013 , Pages 37-53 ; 01770667 (ISSN) Mousavi, S. M ; Alavi, A.H ; Mollahasani, A ; Gandomi, A. H ; Arab Esmaeili, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In the present study, a prediction model was derived for the effective angle of shearing resistance (φ′) of soils using a novel hybrid method coupling genetic programming (GP) and orthogonal least squares algorithm (OLS). The proposed nonlinear model relates φ′ to the basic soil physical properties. A comprehensive experimental database of consolidated-drained triaxial tests was used to develop the model. Traditional GP and least square regression analyses were performed to benchmark the GP/OLS model against classical approaches. Validity of the model was verified using a part of laboratory data that were not involved in the calibration process. The statistical measures of correlation...
