Markdown budgets for retail buyers: help or hindrance?

    , Article Production and Operations Management ; Volume 26, Issue 10 , 2017 , Pages 1875-1892 ; 10591478 (ISSN) Şen, A ; Talebian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
For many retailers, markdown decisions are taken by retail buyers whose compensation is based on sales revenue so their objective is to maximize it through the season. This implies that the buyers' objectives are not perfectly aligned with the overall profitability the firm. Many retailers set markdown budgets prior to the season to control margin erosion and increase profitability. Markdown budget constrains the buyers on the amount of discounts that they can apply on a given inventory of merchandise and sets a limit on the dollar value of markdowns for the season. While markdown budgets may be useful in preventing excessive discounts, they can have a detrimental effect on the buyers'...

The optimal policy for a sampling plan in continuous production in terms of the clearance number

    , Article Computers and Industrial Engineering ; Volume 47, Issue 2-3 , 2004 , Pages 141-147 ; 03608352 (ISSN) Haji, A ; Haji, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
The first objective of this paper is to derive the total cost for one of the most commonly used continuous sampling plans in industry. The total cost includes the costs of inspection, reworks, and defective items returned by the customers. The continuous sampling plan under study is commonly known as CSP-1 which consists of alternate sequences of 100% inspection and random inspection used in continuous production systems. To achieve this objective, we employ the concepts of the renewal reward processes to obtain the long run average unit cost of the sampling plan. The second and the more important objective of this paper is to derive the minimum cost policy for the above sampling plan. The...

Performance prediction of twin-entry turbocharger turbines

, Article Proceedings of the ASME Turbo Expo 2002; Aircraft Engine, Coal, Biomass and Alternative Fuels, Combustion and Fuels, Education, Electric Power, Vehicular and Small Turbomachines, Amsterdam, 3 June 2002 through 6 June 2002 ; Volume 1 , 2002 , Pages 1087-1095 Ghasemi, S ; Shirani, E ; Hajilouy Benisi, A ; The International Gas Turbine Institute ; Sharif University of Technology
    2002
    Abstract
In this paper, the performance of the twin-entry radial flow turbine under steady state and partial admission conditions is modeled. The method, which is developed here, is based on one-dimensional performance prediction. In one-dimensional modeling, the flow properties are assumed constant on a plane normal to the flow direction. This assumption is in contrast with the flow at the rotor entry of a twin-entry turbine under partial admission condition. In this study the one-dimensional performance prediction method for single-entry turbine is modified to analyze the twin-entry turbine. In particular, the loss coefficients due to friction, clearance and blade loading, which are already...

    Abstract
In this research, the centrifugal compressor of a turbocharger is investigated experimentally and numerically. Performance characteristics of the compressor were obtained experimentally by measurements of rotor speed and flow parameters at the inlet and outlet of the compressor. Three dimensional flow field in the impeller and diffuser was analyzed numerically using a full Navier-Stokes program with SST turbulence model. The performance characteristics of the compressor were obtained numerically, which were then compared with the experimental results. The comparison shows good agreement. Furthermore, the effect of area ratio and tip clearance on the performance parameters and flow field was...

Modeling, Simulation and Characterization of Blood Treatment and Filtration Process in Home Hemodialysis Machines

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Masoumi, Arezou (Author) ; Saeedi, Mohammad Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dialysis which is an imperfect but most common treatment option for renal failure is divided into two main types:"peritoneal dialysis" and "hemodialysis". Peritoneal dialysis uses a fluid that is placed into the patient's stomach cavity through a special plastic tube to remove excess waste products and fluid from the body.Hemodialysis uses a special type of filter to remove excess waste products and water from the body and is divided to two groups :Clinical and Home.During hemodialysis, blood passes from the patient's body through a filter in the dialysis machine. In this Study first the basic aspect of renal failure and principle of dialysis process are described. Then information about...

    Abstract
Centrifugal Fans are widely used in industrial and commercial applications, from shop ventilation to material handling to boiler applications. They consume extremely high amount of energy each year. Because of this high consumption, even a small efficiency improvement could led to high amount of energy saving. Many projects have been done with this goal up to now, and present work is one of them, with aim to optimize a industrial centrifugal BI fan performance, with wheel diameter about 400 mm. The research has been done based on 3D numerical methods, done by commercial code Fluent 6.3, in steady state. MRF and k-E models have been used to simulate flow around blades, and turbulence...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hamed, Hamid (Author) ; Abdekhodaei, Mohammad Jafar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to largre number of patients treated by dialysis and its significant increasing progress, dialysis efficiency and patients' life quality are of great interest.Dialyzer, the dialysis beating heart, has the role of cleaning blood by removing toxic solutes and balancing volume of bood's water through hollow fiber membranes. In this thesis, firstly we tried to focus on performance characteristics of dialyzer by studying effective parameters influencing dialyzer efficiency and ultimately we set two important performance characteristics, ultrafiltration coefficient and solute clearance, as our goal parameters for evaluating dialyzer's yield. To this purpose, we designed an experimental set...

Improving the Remediation Process of Asphaltene Deposits in the Well Facility of Koupal-Bangestan Oil Reservoir

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bagherian, Mahmood (Author) ; Ayatollahi, Shahaboddin (Supervisor) ; Ghotbi, Cyrus (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Crude oil production could cause the thermodynamic equilibrium of the crude oil to be disturbed in the well column which results in asphaltene precipitation and deposition. The thickness of the deposited material grows over time until it completely blocks the well column.Due to the hard and insoluble nature of deposited asphaltene, the two main chemical and mechanical methods are found to be more effective. It should be noted that the actual organic sediments in the piping are not pure and consist of three components: asphaltene, resin and paraffin. Therefore, it is very important to know the composition of the deposited material before selecting the appropriate chemical solvent. The samples...

Behavior of a Four Degree of Freedom Jeffcott Rotor with Clearance and Rubbing in Supports

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rayyani, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Dehghani Firouzabadi, Roholla (Supervisor)
    Abstract
different phenomena occur between rotor and support rub impact causing system parts failure. Still Increasing the accuracy of manufacturing and decreasing the clearance of supports but the probability of rub impact between the rotor and support grows and this phenomenon is going to be more critical. This research would rub impact at two ends of four degrees of freedom Jeffcott rotor considering supports directional degree of freedom. Because the contact points are at two ends of the rotor, the rotational degree of freedom of the rotor is also considered. The system is modeled with 8-DOF and after numerical solving and comparison, the results with other papers, the system's behavior including...

    Abstract
In this work, the influence of the clearance and post-braze heat treatment on the microstructure of 4130 steel joint brazed by BNi-4 filler metal was investigated. Samples with different clearances were heated to 1100°C and hold for 9 min. Then, some were reheated to 800°C(2hr) and 800°C(2hr)+1000°C(2hr), cycle 1 and cycle 2, respectively. Microscopy techniques and micro-hardness test were used to evaluate the microstructures. Results suggested that in this case 25μm clearance can be considered as the optimum value. Also, it was found that high temperature post-braze heat treatment can be applied as a useful technique for decreasing the fraction of the brittle phases at the joint main body

    Abstract
An analytical modified method is presented to investigate the clearance effects on the dynamic behavior of cantilever beams. In this work, apart from clearance, all other nonlinearities are avoided to be considered during the analytical solution. The beam is idealized using an equivalent single-degree-of-freedom structure. A tri-linear stiffness system is also adopted to simulate the beam together with the clearance. Subsequently the analytical solution is derived for a cantilever beam structure with and without considering structural damping. The experimental method is employed to verify the results from the presented analytical solutions. It is noted that the results obtained by the...

Assessment of the semi-rigid double-angle steel connections and parametric analyses on their initial stiness using FEM

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 22, Issue 6 , 2015 , Pages 2033-2045 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Esfahanian, A ; Mohamadi Shooreh, M. R ; Mod, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the semi-rigid connections, such as Double-angle Web (DW) connections, which are welded to the beam web and bolted to the column ange, are investigated. This study tries to establish the eect of clearance setback between beam end and column ange and/or web. When the beam rotates, it is desirable to avoid bottom ange of the beam bearing against the column as this can induce large forces on the connection. The usual way of achieving this is to ensure that the connection extends at least a few millimeters beyond the end of beam. For this purpose, several connections are designed and considered based on two dierent shear capacities for the beam. For each connection, two dierent...

    , Article 7th IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Informatics, ICCI 2008, Stanford University, CA, 14 August 2008 through 16 August 2008 ; 2008 , Pages 394-401 ; 9781424425389 (ISBN) Naderan Tahan, M ; Iraji, R ; Manzuri Shalmani, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
In this paper, two different important quality metrics, clearance and execution time, for motion planning of mobile robots are studied. Then a new approach, called Clearance-Based Probabilistic Roadmap Method (CBPRM (c)), is proposed which in contrast to VV(c) method, Visibility-Voronoi with clearance c, beside satisfaction of a predefined clearance is very efficient in running time. This provides the CBPRM (c) to be applicable in dynamic environments which require realtime approaches. Experiments showed that the CBPRM(c) is able to generate paths with very low execution time considering determined clearance. © 2008 IEEE

Analyzing and Modeling of Semi-hinged Connections in Steel Structure

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Haji kazemi, Mohsen (Author) ; Mofid, Massoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Double angle connections, which are welded to the beam web and bolted to the column flange, are usually used to make hinged or semi-hinged connections. Several models are presented in this study whose geometrical properties are different. The finite element software package is used to develop the finite element analysis of the connections. An analytical method is presented that can be used to determine the behavior and deformation for this type of connection. The correctness of Moment-rotation curves of finite element analysis for each connection has been ascertained by comparison, using analytical technique; and a very good agreement has been obtained

Aerodynamic Design Methodology for Changing Axial Compressor Capacity

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mofrad, Ehsan (Author) ; Ghorbanian, Kaveh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Axial compressor design is a very complex and expensive process. In general, for design and development of a new axial compressor, manufacturing companies usually intend to employ an existing and successful axial compressor as an starting point and modify and upgrade it. In this regard, dimensional scaling is a common method for derivative axial compressors. The goal of dimensional scaling is to get a different capacitywhile minimizing the development time and cost. In this thesis, theNASA eight stage transonic axial flow compressor is chosen as the base model for dimensional scaling to lower and upper size of its original dimension. The scaled compressor is analyzed with a quasi 2-D code....

    Abstract
ABSTRACT: Experimental study of the performance of a gas centrifuge can be appreciably simplified if instead of isotopic mixtures, a binary mixture of gases with large molecular weight difference is used. The current study undertook this approach by injecting a 53%–47% (w/w) mixture of “Freon12-Freon22” into a gas centrifuge. The two parameters, whose investigation was the objective of the current study were: the feed flow rate (F), and the clearance between tail scoop and the rotor wall (d). The results demonstrated that changing the scoop-wall clearance has the most significant effect on the cut (θ), so that by fixing “d”, “θ” becomes nearly invariant. The head separation factor (α)...
