An innovative solar assisted desiccant-based evaporative cooling system for co-production of water and cooling in hot and humid climates

    , Article Energy Conversion and Management ; Volume 185 , 2019 , Pages 396-409 ; 01968904 (ISSN) Heidari, A ; Roshandel, R ; Vakiloroaya, V ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Although evaporative coolers consume much lower electricity than the vapor compression systems, they are not applicable in humid climates. Combination of desiccant wheels and evaporative coolers, known as desiccant-based evaporative cooling systems, allows evaporative coolers to be used in humid climates, which provide significant energy and environmental advantages with respect to vapor compression systems. However, one of the main disadvantages of evaporative cooling is the high water. Regarding the global water crisis, a cooling system which saves both water and energy will be an attractive alternative to the current cooling systems. To this aim, this paper presents a novel...

Determination of antioxidant component and activity of rice bran extract

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 6 , December , 2011 , Pages 1402-1406 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Arab, F ; Alemzadeh, I ; Maghsoudi, V ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Rice bran is one of the most important co-products in the rice milling. In this research, antioxidant activity of two Iranian rice bran varieties, Fajr and Tarem, extracted by three different solvents (methanol, ethanol and ethyl acetate) was evaluated. The order of antioxidant activity was evaluated by measurement of total phenolic content, antioxidant activity in linoleic acid system, reducing power and scavenging capacity by DPPH radical. The methanolic extract of Fajr rice bran showed a total phenolic content of 3.31 mg Gallic acid/gr rice bran and a DPPH free radical-scavenging activity of 93.91%, achieved at 50 mg/ml concentration, and a percent inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation...

    Abstract
Renewable hydrogen production plays a key role in transitioning to a hydrogen economy. For this, developing countries are encouraged to keep up with industrialized nations. As such, this study seeks to evaluate the potential of all capital cities of Iran in terms of solar-based hydrogen production and prioritize the nominated alternatives. This step is highly valued because finding the most suitable place for this purpose can lead to substantial outcomes and consequently avoid failure. Therefore, here a 20-kW solar power plant is simulated by PVsyst 6.7 software and meteorological data of 31 capital cities is extracted using Meteonorm 7.1 software. Considering all losses associated with...

Ethylene and cyclohexane co-production in the fixed-bed catalytic membrane reactor: Experimental study and modeling optimization

    , Article Journal of Membrane Science ; Volume 643 , 2022 ; 03767388 (ISSN) Karimi Darvanjooghi, M. H ; Malakootikhah, M ; Magdouli, S ; Brar, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2022
    Abstract
In this study, a fixed-bed catalytic membrane reactor was used for the production of ethylene and cyclohexane from ethane and benzene. A two-dimensional non-isothermal mathematical model was used for estimating the performance of the membrane reactor. Furthermore, the effect of inlet temperature (720–1080 K), feed molar ratio (3–10) and the reactor spacetime (1–76 kgCat.s/mol) was studied on the conversion of ethane to ethylene and benzene to cyclohexane. The results of modeling showed that with the increase of inlet temperature the conversion of both (de)-hydrogenation reactions increased and the 95% of ethane conversion was achieved when the molar ratio of benzene/ethane was fixed on 3....

Development of a zero emission integrated system for co-production of electricity and methanol through renewable hydrogen and CO 2 capture

    , Article International Journal of Greenhouse Gas Control ; Volume 7 , 2012 , Pages 145-152 ; 17505836 (ISSN) Soltanieh, M ; Azar, K. M ; Saber, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In order to decrease CO 2 emission into the atmosphere and develop renewable energy sources for carbon capture, an integrated system is considered for co-production of electricity and methanol. In this research, methanol synthesis unit through captured CO 2 from fossil fuel power plant and produced H 2 from water electrolysis unit by wind renewable energy is developed. An oxy-fuel combustion carbon capture method is considered in large scale Matiant power plant based on utilization of oxygen from water electrolysis unit. Technical and economical analysis of the proposed system shows that when the price of natural gas is 7.8US$/GJ, the total CO 2 avoided cost is 93US$/(tonne of CO 2) and...
