Optimization of Oily and Biological Sludge Digestion and Dewatering Process for Arak Refinery Wastewater Treatment Plant
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Borghei, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Different strategies for the treatment and disposal of petroleum and biological sludge found in the treatment and reuse unit of Arak Petroleum Refinery have been studied in the present study. To this end, the resources found in the literature corresponding to the different fields of sludge treatment were studied and a summary of them which was required by this research was mentioned in the thesis. Considering the problems bound to the wastewater treatment unit of this refinery plant and the previous studies, two completely separate strategies were devised. The first one concerns petroleum and biological sludge being produced continuously. The method of aerobic fixation of petroleum sludge by...
Development of a Bio-Refinery Based on Olive Wastes
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kariminia, Hamid-Reza (Supervisor) ; Eshraghi, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this project, Olive Mill Wastes (OMW) has been considered as a raw material for a bio-refinery. The project is consisted of a design section using SuperPro Designer software and an experimental section. The biorefinery was designed using the software after conducting a survey on the production of different value added material from OMW. The designed process consisted of xanthan gum, methane gas and agriculture fertilizer production. As much as 15000 L of the diluted OMW (to 50% of the initial concentration) is purified and 88 Kg xanthan gum (in 7 days), 2840 Kg methane gas and 200 Kg fertilizer in 25 days are produced at the same time.

Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Nanoparticle Formation Via Microemulsion Method
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Molaei Dehkordi, Asghar (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this work, nanoparticle production via microemulsion method has been investigated from theoretical and experimental points of view. Population balance approach has been used to model nanoparticle formation in an inverse microemulsion system. The study of nanoparticle formation in the inverse microemulsion system of Marlipal O13/40-cyclohexane-water reveals that in low reactants concentrations, the coagulation phenomenon has an important effect on the formation of particles. In this regard, the population balance equations has been developed to consider the coagulation phenomenon in the inverse microemulsion system. The kernel of coagulation has been calculated based on attractive and...
Investigation of Parameters for Controlling Morphology and Pore Size in UF Mambrans
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Seyfkordi, Ali Akbar (Supervisor) ; Hemmati, Mahmud (Supervisor)
Abstract
In order to increase the life-cycle of membrane filtration systems, energy efficient membranes are being developed in membrane bioreactor systems. Technology has been introduced which allows the power required to aerate the membrane for cleaning to be reduced whilst still maintaining a high flux level. Mechanical cleaning processes have also been adopted using granulates as an alternative to conventional forms of cleaning; this reduces energy consumption and also reduces the area required for filtration tanks.Membrane properties have also been enhanced to reduce fouling tendencies by modifying surface properties. This can be noted in the biotechnology industry where membrane surfaces have...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Borghei, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
Petrochemicals, refineries and power plants are among the biggest water-consuming industries. Of all systems in mentioned complex, most water is consumed in the cooling tower system, of which the feed water of the cooling tower accounts for the largest portion of water demand. Drainage loss (blowdown) which constitutes the biggest portion of the feed water losses, varies greatly with changes in source water quality and cooling water treatment. Scarcity of water, large quantities of cooling tower blowdown water and increasing of water price lead to activities for blowdown water treatment to reuse. In this project two pre-treatment methods and two final membrane treatment methods were...
Modeling, Simulation and Production of Nanoparticles PAM by Inverse Emulsion Polymerization Method
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Ramazani Saadat abadi, Ahmad (Supervisor) ; Shahrokhi, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Abedini, Hossein (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
In this project, inverse emulsion polymerization (IEP) modeling of poly acrylamid (PAM) using population balance equations (PBEs) has been performed. For this porpuse zero-one and pseudo- bulk models and hybrid model including the zero-one and pseudo- bulk are applied based on the process conditions. The effects of surfactant steric barrier and surfactant reaction with radicals including monomeric radicals on the radical entry rate into the particle have been taken into account for these models. In the modeling, coagulation phenomenon was included by considering the effects of non-DLVO forces such as hydration and steric forces in addition to the DLVO forces. Simulation results for zero-...
Upgrading "Qaed Basir"Petrochemical Wastewater Treatment Plant
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Borghei, Mehdi (Supervisor) ; Shayegan Salek, Jalaledin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Golpayegan Qaed Basir Petrochemical Company is one of the lucrative and entrepreneurial companies in Iran. Every day in this complex, a large amount of wastewater is being generated and transferred to the evaporative lag after the primary and secondary purification outside the complex and it is not restored. Considering the growing importance of surface and underground water resources, reuse of wastewater is a valuable production. In this research, the optimization of the sewage treatment system of the complex was evaluated by replacing the chemicals in the primary purification unit and also by using chloride-ferric and trickling filter for tertiary purification(treating) of the...
Optimization of the Pulp and Paper Mill Wastewater Treatment System from Recycling with the Aim of Reducing COD by Conducting a Laboratory Pilot Plant
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Raie, Mohammad (Supervisor)
Abstract
Paper and cardboard waste pulping consume large volumes of water, so the discharge of this effluent without proper treatment can have far-reaching environmental consequences. The color and variable COD concentration of wastewater in this industry make treating this wastewater complicated. Therefore, this study aims to reduce the COD of the wastewater treatment plant of a pulp and paper mill under different laboratory conditions to achieve environmental standards in Iran.In this study, coagulation-flocculation and the Fenton process on the wastewater entering the treatment plant were investigated first. It was found that coagulation and flocculation by 750-1250 ppm of alum coagulant and ten...
