    Abstract
In this study, alumina coated steel reinforced geopolymer composites were successfully fabricated and their interfacial and mechanical properties were investigated. The fiber–matrix interface characteristics were assessed using single-fiber push-out and water contact angle experiments as well as SEM-EDS analysis. Finally, the role of alumina coating on the compressive, flexural and toughness of the geopolymer composites was investigated. The morphological studies revealed that alumina coating on steel can chemically bonded and microstructurally integrated with the surrounding matrix. The push-out test showed that the interfacial shear strength was increased approximately 150% in composites...

Effect of different retrofitting techniques on in-plane behavior of masonry wallettes

    , Article Construction and Building Materials ; Volume 169 , 2018 , Pages 578-590 ; 09500618 (ISSN) Vatani Oskouei, A ; Jafari, A ; Bazli, M ; Ghahri, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper presents the results of diagonal compression tests conducted on a series of un-reinforced and reinforced masonry specimens. Reinforced specimens were strengthened by using three types of mortar coating (with and without inner reinforcement), mesh reinforcement, and PP-band reinforcement. In particular, four different reinforcement methods with mortar coating (bare mortar coating, coating with steel mesh, coating with polymer reinforcement, and coating with GFRP mesh reinforcement), three different mesh-only reinforcement (steel mesh, polymer mesh with larger grids, and polymer mesh with smaller grids), and 2 different arrangements of PP-bands (4 × 4 and 6 × 6) were tested. Also,...

Effect of severe plastic deformation on evolution of intermetallic layer and mechanical properties of cold roll bonded Al-Steel bilayer sheets

    Abstract
In this study, evolution of intermetallic layer of the cold roll bonded bilayer of Aluminum-Steel sheets, during severe plastic deformation (SPD) followed by annealing has been investigated. The effect of such evolution on mechanical properties has been discussed. For this purpose, Constrained Groove Pressing (CGP) was used as a SPD process. Field emission scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy and optical microscopy were used for examination of intermetallic compounds morphology and composition. Meanwhile, tensile properties of the bilayer sheets were evaluated. According to microstructural observations, continuous intermetallic layer was formed during...

Resistance spot welding of aluminum to aluminum clad steel sheet: experimental and theoretical analysis

    , Article Journal of Manufacturing Processes ; Volume 58 , 2020 , Pages 429-435 Rahimi, S ; Movahedi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In order to increase the cross-tension to the tensile-shear peak load ratio, aluminum clad steel sheet produced by roll bonding, was used for resistance spot welding to Al-Mg aluminum alloy. The results showed that the weld nugget formed between the aluminum clad layer and Al-Mg base sheet was the load bearing area. Presence of the metallurgical bond between the steel sheet and the aluminum clad layer led to the formation of the Al/Fe intermetallic compound with the thickness less than ∼3.5 μm. This narrow intermetallic layer did not play a detrimental role in the weld strength and therefore, the cross-tension to the tensile-shear peak load ratio reached up to ∼0.5 at the maximum...

Effect of radially functionally graded materials on the primary resonances of large amplitude flexural vibration of in-extensional rotating shafts

    , Article Engineering Structures ; Volume 226 , 2021 ; 01410296 (ISSN) Jahangiri, M ; Bagheri, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
This paper analytically studies the effect of functionally graded materials (FGMs) on the primary resonances of large amplitude flexural vibration of in-extensional rotating shafts with nonlinear curvature as well as nonlinear inertia. The constituent material is assumed to vary along the radial direction according to a power-law gradation. The governing differential equations and the corresponding boundary conditions are derived employing the variational approach. Then, the Galerkin method and the multiple scales perturbation method are utilized to obtain the frequency–response equation. In a numerical case study, the effects of the power-law index on the steady-state responses and locus of...
