The dependency of optical properties on density for hot pressed MgF2

    Abstract
The effects of the most important parameters of hot pressing, including temperature, time and pressure on densification, microstructure and infrared transparency of MgF2 ceramics are discussed. The results show that the absorption or scattering of incident radiation is strongly dependent on the amount of porosity. By increasing the temperature or the pressure, transparency at infrared wavelengths has been increased due to the rise in density. For the longer hot pressing times, a continuous increase in density and infrared transparency has been seen as well. Cold pressing before hot press has minor effects on the density and infrared transparency of MgF2. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights...

    Abstract
In this study, nanostructured biodegradable pure Zn, Zn-4 wt. % Mn and Zn-24 wt % Mn alloys were produced by 20 h mechanical alloying and consequent cold pressing and sintering. Structural evolutions were investigated using the X-ray diffraction technique. Also, the microstructure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The effects of alloy composition on density, mechanical properties, corrosion behavior in Hank's solution, cell viability and cell attachment were investigated. Crystallite size of the synthesized alloys after 20 h of milling reached to less than 40 nm and remained less than 80 nm after consolidation and sintering for 1 h. Alloys contain MnZn13 as second phase...

Synthesis and characterization of Al-SiC nanocomposites produced by mechanical milling and sintering

    , Article Advanced Composite Materials ; Volume 20, Issue 1 , 2011 , Pages 13-27 ; 09243046 (ISSN) Kamrani, S ; Razavi Hesabi, Z ; Riedel, R ; Seyed Reihani, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Aluminum powder and various volume fractions of SiC particles with an average diameter of 50 nm were milled by a high-energy planetary ball mill to produce nanocrystalline Al-SiC nanocomposite powders. Double pressing/sintering process was used to consolidate powders to cylindrical specimens. It was shown that a double cycle of cold pressing and sintering can be utilized to obtain high density Al-SiC nanocomposite parts without using a hot-working step. High resolution scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and laser particle size analyzer (PSA) were used to study the morphological and microstructural evolution of nanocomposite powders and bulk samples. The role of...
