Effect of power randomization on saturation throughput of IEEE 802.11 WLAN

    , Article IEEE International Conference on Communications, 23 May 2010 through 27 May 2010, Cape Town ; 2010 ; 05361486 (ISSN) ; 9781424464043 (ISBN) Sahraei, S ; Ashtiani, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we evaluate the saturation throughput for an IEEE 802.11 based wireless network considering capture effect at the receiver, while nodes transmit with random powers. In this respect, we consider a scenario consisting of a specific number of wireless nodes. Then, we derive the transmission as well as collision probabilities with respect to the perfect capture effect. In order to maximize the saturation throughput we set up an optimization problem and obtain how to compute optimum values for the probabilities corresponding to different power levels. By providing the numerical results, we deduce that power randomization may lead to a significant improvement in saturation...

Development of a 3-D multigroup program for Dancoff factor calculation

    , Article Annals of Nuclear Energy ; Volume 36, Issue 10 , 2009 , Pages 1486-1497 ; 03064549 (ISSN) Zahedinejad, E ; Vosoughi, N ; Sohrabpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Several parameters, one of which is the Dancoff Factor (DF), are used to calculate the resonance integral (RI) and reduced flux in the resonance region of heterogeneous systems as well as to accurately determine the group constants for criticality calculations. This paper is a report on the development of a program to calculate the DF correction factor using Monte Carlo method and collision probability definition in three-dimensional (3-D) geometries and with multi energy groups. Hence, the DF for any arbitrary arrangement of cylindrical and slab fuel elements is hereby calculated. The fuel elements are monitored and kept at equal levels, though different material compositions and formations...

Modeling and evaluation of multi-hop wireless networks using SRNs

    Abstract
As multi-hop wireless networks are attracting more attention, the need to evaluate their performance becomes essential. In order to evaluate the performance metrics of multi-hop wireless networks, including sending and receiving rates of a node as well as the collision probability, a model based on Stochastic Reward Nets (SRNs) is proposed. The proposed SRN models a typical node in such networks, considered as a general template to be applied to any wireless node. The SRN model of a single node is designed to take transmission effects of all neighboring nodes into account, while ignoring the ones whose transmission has no effect on the node under-study. Applying the proposed SRN to each node...

Predicting the collisions of heavy vehicle drivers in iran by investigating the effective human factors

    Abstract
Traffic collisions are one of the most important challenges threatening the general health of the world. Iran's crash statistics demonstrate that approximately 16,500 people lose their lives every year due to road collisions. According to the traffic police of Iran, heavy vehicles (including trailers, trucks, and panel trucks) contributed to 20.5% of the fatal road traffic collisions in the year 2013. This highlights the need for devoting special attention to heavy vehicle drivers to further explore their driving characteristics. In this research, the effect of heavy vehicle drivers' behavior on at-fault collisions over three years has been investigated with an innovative approach of...

An improvement of collision probability in biased birthday attack against A5/1 stream cipher

    , Article 2010 European Wireless Conference, EW 2010, 12 April 2010 through 15 April 2010, Lucca ; April , 2010 , Pages 444-448 ; 9781424459995 (ISBN) Kourkchi, H ; Tavakoli, H ; Naderi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
A5/1 is the strong version of the encryption algorithm on GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) used in many countries. It is constructed of a combination of three LFSRs (Linear Feedback Shift Registers) with irregular clocking manner. One of the most practical attacks against this algorithm is time-memory trade-off attack, which is based on birthday paradox. The goal of this attack is to find any intersection between precomputed LFSRs states set and set of states generating the output bits in the actual execution of the algorithm. In order to increase feasibility of this attack, the biased birthday attack was introduced. In this attack special states producing a specific pattern in...

Stochastic model predictive control-based countermeasure methodology for satellites against indirect kinetic cyber-attacks

    Abstract
The objective of this paper is to provide a stochastic framework to optimally avoid collision between a maneuverable spacecraft and a space object or debris. The satellite collision can be caused through a cyber-attack on a satellite by colliding it with a considered strategic satellite. Consequently, it is highly imperative that critical operational space assets be provided with autonomous collision avoidance systems. The collision avoidance methodology proposed in this paper will reduce the collision probability to an acceptable level and protect the satellite against indirect kinetic cyber-attacks initiated by designing optimal collision avoidance maneuvers using a stochastic model...
