    , Article International Journal of Mining Science and Technology ; Volume 25, Issue 3 , 2015 , Pages 473-478 ; ISSN: 20952686 Razavian, S. M ; Rezai, B ; Irannajad, M ; Ravanji, M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Numerical simulation of the electrical field distribution helps in-depth understanding of the mechanisms behind the responses and the benefits of the high voltage pulse comminution. The COMSOL Multiphysics package was used to numerically simulate the effect of ore compositions in this study. Regarding phosphate ore particles shape and composition, the effects of mineral composition, particle size, particle shape and electrodes distance were investigated on the electrical field intensity and distribution. The results show that the induced electrical field is significantly dependent on the electrical properties of minerals, the feed particle size and the location of conductive minerals in...

Prediction of spindle dynamics in milling by sub-structure coupling

    , Article International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture ; Volume 46, Issue 3-4 , 2006 , Pages 243-251 ; 08906955 (ISSN) Movahhedy, M. R ; Gerami, J. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The Stability of machining process depends on the dynamics of the machine tool, among other things. However, the dynamics of the machine tool changes when the tool is changed. To avoid the need for repeating the measurements, sub-structuring analysis may be used to couple the tool and spindle frequency response functions. A major difficulty in this approach is the determination of joint stiffness and damping between the two sub-structures. In particular, the measurement of rotational responses (RDOFs) at joints is a difficult task. In this research, a simple joint model that accounts for RDOFs is proposed. It is shown that this model avoids RDOF measurement while taking into account the...

Prediction of chatter in high speed milling including gyroscopic effects

    , Article International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture ; Volume 46, Issue 9 , 2006 , Pages 996-1001 ; 08906955 (ISSN) Movahhedy, M. R ; Mosaddegh, P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Dynamic stability of machine tools during operations is dependent on many parameters including the spindle speed. In high and ultra high speed machining, the gyroscopic effect on the spindle dynamics becomes more pronounced and can affect the borders of stability of the rotating system. In this paper, a finite element based model of spindle, tool holder and cutting tool is presented which uses Timoshenko beam theory to obtain the frequency response of the system when gyroscopic terms are included. Using this response, the stability of a high speed spindle system in the presence of gyroscopic effect is investigated. It is shown that the gyroscopic effects lower the critical depth of cut in...

Preparation of nanocrystalline Fe-Si-Ni soft magnetic powders by mechanical alloying

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering B: Solid-State Materials for Advanced Technology ; Volume 123, Issue 1 , 2005 , Pages 74-79 ; 09215107 (ISSN) Madaah Hosseini, H. R ; Bahrami, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
In this study, structural and magnetic properties of nanocrystalline Fe-Si-Ni powders produced by mechanical alloying (MA) have been investigated. The samples with different chemical compositions and milling times were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The alloy powders with average grain size 8-19 nm were synthesized by milling for 35-100 h. Coercivity (Hc) and crystallite size exhibited a similar decrease by increasing the mechanical alloying time. Maximum saturation magnetization (Ms) and minimum Hc were obtained at the composition of Fe87Si10Ni5 after 70 h milling. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

Application of a new spherical super element in predicting the deformation of biological cells in microinjection

    , Article Proceedings of the ASME Design Engineering Technical Conference, 28 August 2011 through 31 August 2011 ; Volume 7 , August , 2011 , Pages 41-49 ; 9780791854846 (ISBN) Sarvi, M. N ; Ahmadian, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Biological cell injection is a sensitive and important work which is implemented in injection of foreign materials into individual cells. Microinjection is significantly developed in the field of drug discovery and genetics so predicting the behavior of cell in microinjection is remarkably important because a tiny excessive manipulation force can destroy the tissue of the biological cell. There are a few analytical methods available to simulate the cell injection, hence the numerical methods such as FEM are suitable to be used to model the microinjection. In this study, a new spherical super element is presented to model the biological cells and deformation of a specific cell under an...

On the temperature and residual stress field during grinding

    , Article WCE 2010 - World Congress on Engineering 2010, 30 June 2010 through 2 July 2010 ; Volume 2 , 2010 , Pages 1196-1200 ; 9789881821072 (ISBN) H-Gangaraj, S. M ; Farrahi, G. H ; Ghadbeigi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Grinding is widely used for manufacturing of components that require fine surface finish and good dimensional accuracy. In this study a thermo-mechanical finite element analysis is conducted to find out how grinding parameters can affect temperature and residual stress distribution in the workpiece. Results of parametric study presented in this work indicate, by carefully selecting the grinding parameters, minimum thermal and mechanical damage can be achieved. Higher workpiece velocities produce higher surface residual stress. By increasing depths of cut, depth of tensile residual stresses increases. Convection heat coefficient does not have any considerable effect on surface residual stress...
