    Abstract
In this Study, radiator performance for passenger car has been studied experimentally in wide range of operating conditions. Experimental prediction of Nusselt number and heat transfer coefficient for coolant in radiator tubes are also performed with ε-NTU method. The total effectiveness coefficient of radiator and heat transfer coefficient in air side is calculated via try and error method considering experimental data. The Colburn factor and pressure drop are also estimated for this heat exchanger. Examples of application demonstrate the practical usefulness of this method to provide empirical data which can be used during the design stage. Copyright © 2006 by ASME

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi Ghalinghieh, Hamed (Author) ; Afshin, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Gas liquefication in low temperatures is one of the most challenging fields in engineering due to complexity of its thermodynamic analisys and fabrication of equipments. Heat Exchangers are one of the most important equipments in these prosseces. High prices of Heat Exchangers in these facilities makes their Optimal and cost effective design, of crucial importance. In this thesis three dimensional model of a Plate Fin Heat Exchanger is thoroughly investigated. Fistly, by means of Aspen Heat Exchanger design Software a counter flow Heat Exchanger is designed. This HX is to be placed in Collins cycle, so, working fluid in both hot and cold streams is Helium Gas. The HX then by means of ANSYS...

    Abstract
In order to reach a more efficient and compact heat exchanger, it is essential to optimize the design, having in mind the impact of different geometrical parameters. Many of the previously cited studies in the area of heat transfer enhancement using vortex generators were confined only to defined points in the possible design space. Thus, a multiobjective optimization study is particularly suitable in order to cover this space entirely. A CFD simulation along with Pareto method were used to simulate the air flow and heat transfer and optimize the design parameters. The angle of attack of a pair of delta-winglets mounted behind each tube is varied between β = -90° and ß = +90°. Three...

A comparative study between linear and sliding mode adaptive controllers for a hot gas generator

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 30, Issue 5 , 2010 , Pages 413-424 ; 13594311 (ISSN) Abedi, M ; Bakhtiari Nejad, F ; Saffar Avval, M ; Abedi, M ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A hot gas generator is a compact heat exchanger that produces high temperature or enthalpy gases. This paper presents two methods for controlling the system. The first one is an adaptive sliding mode controller that is a Lyapunov based method and proposed to confront the dynamic modeling deficiencies and system uncertainties. The second one is a linear adaptive controller that gives a new attractive ability to the system which can track a complicated requested path. Each of the presented controllers has some capabilities that may be preferred to other. In this paper, these methods are extensively compared by several transient inputs. On the other hand, since heat exchangers are typically...

Heat transfer enhancement of a fin-and-tube compact heat exchanger by employing magnetite ferrofluid flow and an external magnetic field

    , Article Applied Thermal Engineering ; Volume 164 , 2020 Bezaatpour, M ; Rostamzadeh, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Compact heat exchangers as modern industrial devices are designed to improve heat recovery and saving energy processes in restricted spaces. In the current study, effect of a uniform external magnetic field with Fe3O4/water nanofluid for heat transfer enhancement of a fin-and-tube compact heat exchanger is numerically investigated. The obtained results are verified by the available experimental data to demonstrate accuracy of the present simulation. The results indicated that the local and average heat transfer coefficients increase around the tubes in the presence of an external magnetic field due to the vortex formation behind the tubes as well as the flow pattern alteration in the heat...

A general multi-scale modeling framework for two-phase simulation of multi-stream plate-fin heat exchangers

    , Article International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer ; Volume 156 , 2020 Niroomand, R ; Saidi, M. H ; Hannani, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Compact heat exchangers are among the vital components used in various industries. In this study, a general framework has been developed with a multi-scale point of view for three-dimensional simulation of multi-stream plate-fin heat exchangers. The most important features in the MSPFHEs simulation, such as phase change phenomena, multi-component mixtures, multiple streams, transversal, lateral and longitudinal conduction, non-uniformity of inlet flow, variable fluid properties, and heat leakage are simultaneously considered in this model. The modular form of the model structure has facilitated layer-by-layer simulation of cross flow heat exchangers as well as parallel flow ones. Our model...

    Abstract
In the present study, the effects of rotary tubes and magnetic-induced nanofluid on heat transfer characteristics of a compact heat exchanger are individually investigated. Two-phase Eulerian model is employed to predict the hydrothermal and entropic characteristics of Fe3O4/water ferrofluid in the heat exchanger. Results indicate that utilizing each rotary tubes and magnetic field method can improve the energy and exergy efficiencies of the compact heat exchanger under specific circumstances by forming different types of secondary flow. It is found that employing each method individually can increase the maximum heat transfer rate by more than 60%. In comparison with methods like passive...

Two phase gas-liquid bubbly flow modeling in vertical mini pipe

    , Article 2010 14th International Heat Transfer Conference, IHTC 14, 8 August 2010 through 13 August 2010 ; Volume 3 , 2010 , Pages 947-956 ; 9780791849385 (ISBN) Kebriaee, M. H ; Karabi, H ; Khorsandi, S ; Saidi, M. H ; Heat Transfer Division ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Studies on two-phase flow in small scale pipes have become more important, because of the application of mini-scale devices in several engineering fields including, high heat-flux compact heat exchangers, and cooling systems of various types of equipment. In a mini pipe the behavior of two phase flow is not the same as flow in conventional pipes. The difference is caused by different effective forces; for e. g. inside a mini pipe capillary forces are more important in comparison with gravitational forces. This paper is devoted to numerical simulation of gas-liquid two phase flow in a vertical mini pipe. Prediction of bubble shape and the effects of gas and liquid velocities on flow...

    , Article Journal of Heat Transfer ; Volume 133, Issue 2 , Nov , 2011 ; 00221481 (ISSN) Ahmadi, P ; Hajabdollahi, H ; Dincer, I ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In the present work, a thermal modeling is conducted for optimal design of compact heat exchangers in order to minimize cost and entropy generation. In this regard, an εNTU method is applied for estimation of the heat exchanger pressure drop, as well as effectiveness. Fin pitch, fin height, fin offset length, cold stream flow length, no-flow length, and hot stream flow length are considered as six decision variables. Fast and elitist nondominated sorting genetic algorithm (i.e., nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II) is applied to minimize the entropy generation units and the total annual cost (sum of initial investment and operating and maintenance costs) simultaneously. The results for...
