    Abstract
In this study, effect of MAPE (maleic anhydride polyethylene) as the compatibilizer on the mechanical properties of wood-flour polyethylene composites has been investigated by using Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). Composites were made at 25% and 50% by weight fiber contents and 1% and 2% compatibilizer respectively. Controls were also made at the same fiber contents without the compatibilizer. Static mechanical tests including tensile and bending tests were performed. Temperature scans in the range of- 110 to +100°C was also conducted. Results indicated improvements in the mechanical properties due to the compatibilizer addition. Storage modulus values were higher in the case of coupled...

Study of Mechanical Properties of PP/r-PET Composite Reinforced with Flax Fiber

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yosefinezhad, Mehdi (Author) ; Shojaei, Akbar (Supervisor) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recycling of polymers, with the aim of environmental protection and economical benefits, is important procedure, which is constantly developing. In this study the effect of the incorporation of recycled PET(r-PET) and recycled polypropylene/Flax(r-PP/Flax) to PP at low (20wt %) and medium content (40wt %) of r-PET was investigated. Polymer compounds were prepared by twin screw extruder followed by injection moulding. The effect of r-PP/Flax and r-PET on PP was evaluated using different techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetery (DSC), rheological behavior, and mechanical properties (tensile modulus, yield strength, and charpy notched impact...

Refining of Nanostructure of Polypropylene/Nanoclay Composite Via Optimization of Compatibilizer and Masterbatch

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jalili, Negin Sadat (Author) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Polypropylene (PP) is a fast growing polymer, particularly in automotive industry, where PP compounds have replaced many different parts made of conventional materials. In the first step, PP-g-MA, as compatibilizer, was synthesized. Two kinds of polypropylenes including a homo- and a block co-polymer were incorporated for this goal. Characterizations via titration and FTIR tests revealed higher degree of grafting reaction when homo-polymer was used for synthesizing PP-g-MA. In the next step, nanocomposites containing 3 wt% nanoclay with three different PP-g-MA/nanoclay ratios of 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1were made using a co-rotating twin screw extruder. Tensile, impact and XRD tests were performed to...

Survey on Incompatibility between Content Externalism and Privileged Access to Mental States

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Belal Niaki, Sadegh (Author) ; Azadegan, Ebrahim (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Content-Externalism is the view according to which, content of mental states are determined by relation that the person has with his environment and content of mental states does not depend on intrinsic properties of subjects. According to this view, if two persons with exactly same intrinsic properties were in different environments, contents of their mental states would be different. On the other hand, the doctrine of privileged access to mental states asserts that if cognitive faculty is functioning properly, then subject can know the content of his mental states a priori. Many critics of externalism believes that accepting externalism along with privileged access terminate to...

Production and Investigation of Properties of a Nanocomposite for Food Packaging

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Dadfar, Mohammad Ali (Author) ; Alemzadeh, Iran (Supervisor) ; Vossoughi, Manuchehr (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nanocomposite films based on low density polyethylene (LDPE), containing of 2, 3, and 4 wt% organoclay (OC) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer as a new compatibilizer were prepared and characterized using X-ray diffraction, tensile tests, and oxygen permeation measurements. There was no exfoliation or intercalation of the clay layers in the absence of EVA, while an obvious increase in d-spacing was observed when the samples were prepared with EVA present. This issue was reflected in the properties of nanocomposites. The oxygen barrier properties of the OC/EVA/LDPE film were significantly better than those of the OC/LDPE film. The average aspect ratio of clay platelets in...

The Effect of Compatibilizer and Short Glass Fiber on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of PBT/PC Blend

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahab, Amir Reza (Author) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, we studied the effect of compatibilizer and short glass fiber on microstructure and mechanical properties of PBT/PC blends. Fisrt, Antioxidants and sodium pyrophosphate dibasic were used to suppress transesterification in PBT/PC Blend. The results showed that best composition occur when both of them are used. In the next step, we used 3%wt MBS (methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene) and saw that this weight percent of this compatibilizer doesn’t useful. Moreover addition of short glass fiber to PBT/PC was examined and the results showed that mechanical properties of composite are extensively increased. Also in this step, we proved this idea that we can replace some of PBT...

Role of different compatibilizing approaches on the microstructure and mechanical properties of polypropylene/talc composites

    , Article AIP Conference Proceedings ; Vol. 1593, issue , 15- 19 July , 2014 , pp. 428-431 ; ISSN: 0094243X Homayounfar, S. Z ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Since in a highly filled polymer, a major problem arises from non-uniformity of properties due to the poor dispersion of filler, the application of coupling agents have been directed to overcome this problem and also to enhance the mechanical performance of the composites by improving the adhesion at the interface. In this study, a comparison between two major coupling approaches is conducted: 1) Using PPgMA as a kind of compatibilizer which changes the nature of the matrix, 2) Using titanate coupling agent which takes action at the interface and reacts with hydroxyl groups at the inorganic filler surface, resulting in the formation of monomolecular layer on the inorganic surface to increase...

Study of the scratch resistance criteria and their relationship with mechanical properties and microstructure in a ternary thermoplastic blend

    , Article Wear ; Volume 386-387 , 2017 , Pages 118-128 ; 00431648 (ISSN) Motamedi, P ; Bagheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Polymeric materials generally suffer from a low resistance to various types of surface mechanical damage, among which scratch is a prominent example. While several attempts have been made to assess the scratch resistance and its relationship with the bulk mechanical properties in simple polymeric systems, the available research on the polymeric blends is scarce. This study attempts to fill this gap by studying the link between the scratch resistance and mechanical properties in a ternary polymeric nanocomposite, which has proved to feature superior and tunable mechanical properties. For this aim, blends of polypropylene and polyamide 6 were prepared using melt blending with two different...

    Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of two compatibilizers, namely maleated polypropylene (PP-g-MA) and maleic anhydride grafted poly (ethylene-co-octene) (EOC-g-MA), on the morphology and thus properties of ternary nanocomposites of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-octene copolymer (EOC)/clay nanocomposite. In this regard the nanocomposites and their neat polymer blend counterparts were processed twice using a twin screw extruder. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy were utilized to characterize nanostructure and microstructure besides mechanical and rheological behaviors of the...
