Three-dimensional interlaminar stress analysis at free edges of general cross-ply composite laminates

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 24, Issue 2 , 2003 , Pages 121-130 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Tahani, M ; Nosier, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2003
    Abstract
A layerwise theory is used to investigate analytically the interlaminar stresses near the free edges of general cross-ply composite laminates under uniform axial extension. Laminates with finite dimensions are considered and full three-dimensional stresses in the interior and the boundary-layer regions are calculated. The results obtained from this theory are compared with those available in the literature. It is found that the edge-effect problem of general cross-ply laminates is actually a quasi three-dimensional problem and its stress analysis can be restricted to a generic two-dimensional cross-section of the laminates. © 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. Abstract
Interlaminar stresses resulting from bending of rectangular cross-ply composite laminates are determined using a layer wise laminate theory. Two types of laminates are considered. First a fully simply supported laminate subjected to bi-directional bending is analyzed. The results obtained from this theory are compared with those of the published three-dimensional elasticity solutions to verify the validity and accuracy of the present theory. Then laminates with two edges simply supported and the other two edges free are examined. The results indicate the presence of significant interlaminar stresses near the free edges. © 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

    Abstract
In the present study, an analytical solution is proposed to determine the interlaminar stresses in long symmetric laminated composite plates subjected to shearing loads. An improved first-order shear deformation theory (IFSDT) and a simplified IFSDT (SIFSDT) are utilized to calculate the unknown constants appearing in the reduced elasticity displacement field which actually demonstrate the global deformations of the plate. Then the numerical values of the interlaminar normal and shear stresses are established through the laminates by using Reddy's layerwise theory. Finally, several numerical examples are presented to study the interlaminar stresses in the interfaces of the layers and through...

    Abstract
The purpose of this study is to define a piecewise fatigue damage model (PFDM) for the prediction of damage in composite laminates under cyclic loading based on the continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model. Assuming that damage in fiber-reinforced plastic structures accumulates nonlinearly, a piecewise degradation growth function is defined and coupled with CDM and micromechanics approaches. The model divides the damage behavior of fiber, matrix, and fiber/matrix debonding at the ply scale, into three different stages. For generality, a fully multi-stage damage formulation on a single-ply level is employed. The unknown parameters of the PFDM are estimated according to obtained experimental...

    Abstract
An elasticity formulation for finite general cross-ply (symmetric and unsymmetric) laminates subjected to extension and/or a layerwise temperature distribution is developed. It is shown that the edge-effect problem of such laminates is actually a quasi-threedimensional problem and its stress analysis can be restricted to a generic two-dimensional cross-section of the laminates. A layerwise theory is used to investigate analytically the interlaminar stresses near the free edges of general cross-ply composite laminates. The results obtained from this theory are compared with those available in the literature. It is found that the theory can predict very accurately the stresses in the interior...

    Abstract
Predicting the failure probability of composite laminates under fatigue loading has many uncertainties, such as material properties, loading, boundary conditions, etc. In this paper, the failure probability of pin-loaded composite laminates is investigated. For this purpose, the continuum damage mechanics (CDM) theory has been combined with Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) as a physics of failure tool to predict the failure of composite laminates in different directions (fibers, matrix, and shear) to calculate the probability of failure of the composite laminates under fatigue loading. Therefore, the failure function will be formed using the CDM theory and random variables identified. Finally,...

    Abstract
In the present study, by starting from the reduced form of elasticity displacement field for a long flat laminate, an analytical method is developed in order to accurately calculate the interlaminar stresses near the free edges of generally laminated composite plates under extension. , M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tavakoly, Ashkan (Author) ; Kazemi, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The fiber-reinforced composite materials are used widely because of their high strength-to-density and stiffness-to-density ratios. The laminated composites are susceptible to delamination. When a delaminated composite plate is subjected to in-plane compression, buckling in the delaminated region may occur. In this thesis, after verification and validation of the models, the effect of the length of the longest and near surface delamination and beneath delaminations on critical buckling load of composite laminates are investigated. Numerical study is carried out to determine the buckling load of clamped composite plates with different symmetric and anti symmetric stacking sequences. The...

    Abstract
Particulate ceramic reinforced aluminum matrix composites have high specific strength and stiffness; however, low fracture toughness and deformability have restricted their industrial applications. Among the methods introduced to overcome this shortcoming is fabricating the layered composites which contain alternative layers of aluminum (Al) and discontinuously reinforced aluminum (DRA). In this study, two different routes; i.e., "Powder extrusion - Casting - Rolling" and "Powder extrusion - Roll bonding" were employed to produce layered Al-DRA composites. After production of Al6061/SiCp composites via hot powder extrusion, mentioned processes were utilized to make DRA-Al-DRA laminate. In...

    Abstract
In this thesis, buckling of truncated conical shells made of composite laminates with general lamination sequence is investigated. The conical shell is considered under axial compression with simply supported or clamped boundary condition. First, Donnel type nonlinear equations and boundary conditions for doubly curved shells are obtained using Hamilton principle. Second, using adjacent equilibrium criterion, the nonlinear equations was linearized then with defining lame parameters and curvature radius, the linear equations of conical shell was extracted. The power series and Galerkin method was used to solve differential equations. The obtained results are in good agreement with available...

    , Article TIC-STH'09: 2009 IEEE Toronto International Conference - Science and Technology for Humanity, 26 September 2009 through 27 September 2009, Toronto, ON ; 2009 , Pages 170-175 ; 9781424438785 (ISBN) Ghaffari, H ; Saeedi, E ; Zabihollah, A ; Ahmadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper deals with the problem of vibration based health monitoring (VHM) in multi-stable asymmetrical laminated composite structures. Multi-stable asymmetrical laminates can be snapped between two or more geometries. The ability of snapping between two or more geometries in multistable composite structures makes them vulnerable to delaminate. Because of these reason early detection of damage in these systems during their service life is receiving increasing attention. In the present work, an efficient and accurate finite element model (FEM) based on layer-wise theory by considering the electro-mechanical coupling effect has been developed to investigate the actuation and /or sensing...

Stress Analysis in Symmetric Composite Laminates Subjected to Shearing Load

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mousanezhad Viyand, Davood (Author) ; Nosier, Asghar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present study, an analytical solution is developed to calculate the interlaminar stresses in long symmetric laminated composite plates subjected to shearing load. At first, upon the successive integrations of the strain-displacement relations and using the existing patterns in deformation of a long symmetric laminate, the general displacement field is extracted and simplified to the final form. Presented solution is based on a combined method containing the equivalent single-layer (ESL) theories beside the Reddy’s layerwise theory. In this method, the equivalent single-layer theories are utilized because of their simplicity and low computational efforts rather than the layerwise...

    Abstract
Researchers have examined different approaches to improve damage tolerance of discontinuously reinforced aluminum (DRA). In this study, three-layer DRA laminates containing two exterior layers of Al6061-15 vol.% SiCp and an interlayer of Al1050 were fabricated by hot roll bonding. Interfacial adhesion between the layers was controlled by means of rolling stain. The results of shear test revealed that, the bonding strength of laminates was influenced by number of rolling passes. Considering this effect, the role of interfacial bonding on the toughness of laminates was studied under three-point bending in the crack divider orientation. The quasi-static toughness of the laminates was greater...
