    Abstract
Multi-site photoplethysmography is an optoelectronic technique that measures changes in blood volume associated with cardiac contraction. Photoplethysmogram (PPG) recording enables researchers to study the vascular and hemodynamic properties of human subjects. Currently, there is no commercial system available in the market to perform multi-channel PPG recording. The measurements can be obtained from fingertips, ear lobes and toes due to their low absorption and high degree of vasculature. The main objective of this project is to develop a suitable data compression algorithm for two-channel simultaneous high resolution wireless PPG recording system. MATLAB software was used during the...

Neural network-based brain tissue segmentation in MR images using extracted features from intraframe coding in H.264

    , Article Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering, 9 December 2011 through 10 December 2011, Singapore ; Volume 8349 , December , 2012 ; 0277786X (ISSN) ; 9780819490254 (ISBN) Jafari, M ; Kasaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Automatic brain tissue segmentation is a crucial task in diagnosis and treatment of medical images. This paper presents a new algorithm to segment different brain tissues, such as white matter (WM), gray matter (GM), cerebral spinal fluid (CSF), background (BKG), and tumor tissues. The proposed technique uses the modified intraframe coding yielded from H.264/(AVC), for feature extraction. Extracted features are then imposed to an artificial back propagation neural network (BPN) classifier to assign each block to its appropriate class. Since the newest coding standard, H.264/AVC, has the highest compression ratio, it decreases the dimension of extracted features and thus yields to a more...

    , Article 5th International Conference on Signal Processing and Telecommunication Systems, ICSPCS'2011, Honolulu, HI, 12 December 2011 through 14 December 2011 ; 2011 ; 9781457711800 (ISBN) Ghamisi, P ; Sepehrband, F ; Choupan, J ; Mortazavi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper introduces two new compression methods. One of these methods is adaptive and powerful for the compression of hyperspectral data, which is based on separating the bands with different specifications by the histogram analyzes and new version of Binary Hybrid GA-PSO (BHGAPSO) and compressing each one with a different manner. The new proposed methods improve the compression ratio of the JPEG standards and save storage space the transmission system. The proposed methods are applied on different test cases, and the results are evaluated and compared with some other compression methods, such as lossless JPEG and JPEG2000

    Abstract
Medical images include information about human body which are used for different purposes such as surgical and diagnostic plans. Compression of medical images is used in some applications such as profiling patient's data and transmission systems. Regard to importance of medical images information, lossless or near-lossless compression is preferred. Lossless JPEG, JPEG-LS and lossless version of JPEG2000 are few well-known methods for lossless compression. JPEG2000 is one of the latest and provides good compression ratio, however, it is complex [1]. In real time application which needs hardware implementation, low complex algorithm accelerates compression process. In this paper, a lossless...

New rectangular partitioning methods for lossless binary image compression

    , Article International Conference on Signal Processing Proceedings, ICSP, 24 October 2010 through 28 October 2010 ; 2010 , Pages 694-697 ; 9781424458981 (ISBN) Kafashan, M ; Hosseini, H ; Beygiharchegani, S ; Pad, P ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we propose two lossless compression techniques that represent a two dimensional Run-length Coding which can achieve high compression ratio. This method works by partitioning the block regions of the input image into rectangles instead of working by runs of adjacent pixels, so it is found to be more efficient than 1D RLE Run-length Coding for transmitting texts and image. In the first method, length and width of consecutive black and white rectangles are transmitted. The idea of this method is new and it can be very effective for some images which have large blocks of black or white pixels. But in the second method only black rectangles are considered in order to transmit and...

An efficient lossless medical image transformation method by improving prediction model

, Article International Conference on Signal Processing Proceedings, ICSP, 24 October 2010 through 28 October 2010 ; 2010 , Pages 728-731 ; 9781424458981 (ISBN) Sepehrband, F ; Mortazavi, M ; Ghorshi, S ; IEEE Beijing Section; The Chinese Institute of Electronics (CIE); The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET); Union Radio Scientifique Internationale (URSI); National Natural Science Foundation of China ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Medical images include human body picture and it is used in diagnosis purpose [1]. Lossless compression of medical image is an application of medical imaging. During lossless compression task, transformation algorithm can be used to increase compression ratio. In Real time applications such as telemedicine and online diagnosis, hardware implementation accelerates the process. Hence, for such purposes medical compression is better to be simple. Lossless JPEG and JPEG2000 are some compression method. JPEG2000 gives better compression ratio. However, it is complex. In this paper an efficient method of lossless image transformation has been introduced by improving prediction model. Simulation...

Joint intra and multiple description coding for packet loss resilient video transmission

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Multimedia ; 2017 ; 15209210 (ISSN) Kazemi, M ; Iqbal, R ; Shirmohammadi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Multiple Description Coding (MDC) is a technique for video transmission over error prone networks where the descriptions are routed over multiple paths. Intra coding like MDC provides error resiliency but coding in this mode must be decided with care since it degrades the compression ratio. In this paper, we present our investigation results for a new intra coding approach in MDC. We have found that, in MDC streams, the best policy is to encode selective frames as I-frame instead of coding some macroblocks of frames in intra mode. In order to find the most suitable I-frame positions within a given video stream, we developed a cost function based on which intra/inter frame type is decided....

Wavelet-based 2-D ECG data compression method using SPIHT and VQ coding

    , Article EUROCON 2007 - The International Conference on Computer as a Tool, Warsaw, 9 September 2007 through 12 September 2007 ; December , 2007 , Pages 133-137 ; 142440813X (ISBN); 9781424408139 (ISBN) Sahraeian, S. M. E ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
An improved wavelet-based 2-D ECG data compression method is presented which employs a double stage compression. In the first stage the set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) algorithm is used to compress the 2-D data array formed by cutting and beat-aligning the heartbeat data sequence. In the second stage vector quantization is applied to the residual image obtained from the previous stage. The 2-D approach utilizes both inter-beat and inter-sample redundancies in the ECG signal The proposed algorithm is applied to several records in the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. Results show lower Percent Root mean square Difference (PRD) than 1-D methods and several 2-D methods for the same...

An experimental study on the effect of hydrogen enrichment on diesel fueled HCCI combustion

    , Article International Journal of Hydrogen Energy ; Volume 36, Issue 21 , 2011 , Pages 13820-13830 ; 03603199 (ISSN) Guo, H ; Hosseini, V ; Neill, W. S ; Chippior, W. L ; Dumitrescu, C. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper experimentally investigates the influence of hydrogen enrichment on the combustion and emission characteristics of a diesel HCCI engine using a modified Cooperative Fuel Research (CFR) engine. Three fuels, n-heptane and two middle distillates with cetane numbers of 46.6 and 36.6, are studied. The results show that hydrogen enrichment retards the combustion phasing and reduces the combustion duration of a diesel HCCI engine. Besides, hydrogen enrichment increases the power output and fuel conversion efficiency, and improves the combustion stability. However, hydrogen enrichment may narrow the operational compression ratio range and increase the knocking tendency. Both the overall...

ECG denoising and compression using a modified extended Kalman filter structure

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering ; Volume 55, Issue 9 , September , 2008 , Pages 2240-2248 ; 00189294 (ISSN) Sayadi, O ; Shamsollahi, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
This paper presents efficient denoising and lossy compression schemes for electrocardiogram (ECG) signals based on a modified extended Kalman filter (EKF) structure. We have used a previously introduced two-dimensional EKF structure and modified its governing equations to be extended to a 17-dimensional case. The new EKF structure is used not only for denoising, but also for compression, since it provides estimation for each of the new 15 model parameters. Using these specific parameters, the signal is reconstructed with regard to the dynamical equations of the model. The performances of the proposed method are evaluated using standard denoising and compression efficiency measures. For...
