Biological treatment of petroleum contaminated soils by soil slurry-sequencing batch reactors (SS-SBRs)

    , Article 4th International Conference on Waste Management and the Environment, Waste Management 2008, Granada, 2 June 2008 through 4 June 2008 ; Volume 109 , 2008 , Pages 751-758 ; 17433541 (ISSN); 9781845641139 (ISBN) Torabifar, B ; Torabian, A ; Azimi, A. Abstract
The soil slurry-sequencing bath reactor (SS-SBR) was studied to treat poorly graded sand with clay (SP-SC) contaminated by aged petroleum hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with concentrations of 23000 mg/kg and 750 mg/kg respectively. An 8 L bioreactor was operated with a 10% solid concentration (0.1 kg dry soil/L slurry). The fill period was relatively instantaneous, and the draw period lasted approximately 1 minute so the react period comprised essentially the entire cycle time. In the draw period a fraction of slurry (10%) was removed from the SS-SBR weekly and it was replaced with untreated slurry. This volumetric replacement strategy provided 70 days hydraulic...

Modeling of thermal pollution in the northern coastal area of the Persian Gulf and its economical and environmental assessment

    , Article 8th International Conference on Modelling, Monitoring and Management of Water Pollution, WATER POLLUTION 2006, WP06, Bologna, 4 September 2006 through 6 September 2006 ; Volume 95 , 2006 , Pages 445-453 ; 17433541 (ISSN); 184564042X (ISBN); 9781845640422 (ISBN) Abbaspour, M ; Javid, A. Abstract
The Persian Gulf is one of the aquatic ecosystems which has recently been faced with different pollutions. Cooling water discharges due to various industries such as power plants can cause important disorders on the present ecosystem balance and on aquatic creatures because of their high temperature. Thermal pollution leads to their migration, creates a potential for new coming species which in turn can thoroughly change the marine ecosystem feature. In this research, thermal pollution due to the Bandar Abbas Thermal Power Plant (BATP) development plan was modeled using MIKE21 software. In order to avoid a decrease in the power plant efficiency in the development plan, the distance between...

Minimization of adverse environmental effects of a sports complex through implementation of green management

    , Article 4th International Conference on Urban Regeneration and Sustainability, SUSTAINABLE CITY 2006, SC06, Tallin, 17 July 2006 through 19 July 2006 ; Volume 93 , 2006 , Pages 457-465 ; 17433541 (ISSN); 1845640403 (ISBN); 9781845640408 (ISBN) Abbaspour, M ; Karbasi, A. Abstract
Implementation of green management in sports complexes can ensure the continuous arrangement and assessment of activities from an environmental perspective and will end up with the control and prevention of contaminants. Enghelab Sports Complex in Iran was selected for this study due to its size and long-term activities. The establishment of Enghelab Sports Complex is among important national projects whose framework was founded in the late 1950s. Due to the comprehensive plan of the aforesaid sports complex, numerous centers and departments were established in this site in order to materialize its envisioned sports, recreational and cultural objectives. Green management pursues greater...

New methods of reducing the phase quantization error effects on beam pointing and parasitic side lobe level of the phased array antennas

    , Article 2006 Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference, APMC, Yokohama, 12 December 2006 through 15 December 2006 ; Volume 3 , 2006 , Pages 2114-2117 ; 4902339102 (ISBN); 9784902339109 (ISBN) Taheri, S ; Farzaneh, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Usually the digital phase shifters are used to steer the beam of a phased array antenna, and the accuracy of beam steering and other properties of the radiation pattern is dependent on the number of bits of the phase shifter and its resolution. In this paper the results of simulations, accomplished using a number of phase feeding methods in order to reduce the phase quantization error effects are presented and three new methods are introduced and compared with the previous works. Software of passenger vehicle optimal work and energy recovery (POWER)

    , Article 12th International Conference on Urban Transport and the Environment in the 21st Century, URBAN TRANSPORT 2006, UT06, Prague, 12 July 2006 through 14 July 2006 ; Volume 89 , 2006 , Pages 691-699 ; 17433509 (ISSN); 1845641795 (ISBN); 9781845641795 (ISBN) Farzaneh, H ; Saboohi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
In our investigation, the model of optimal energy flow in a passenger vehicle has been founded on the theory of firm microeconomics. Based on this theory, the car owner tries to minimize the total cost of the system (including the cost of time of the traveller) subject to the satisfaction of the required transport services and technological, economical, environmental and institutional constraints. The aforementioned model has been developed using a technique of mathematical programming. The model depicts the behaviour of a nonlinear system and it includes many nonlinear functions in the objective function and in the constraints. Solving the large nonlinear set of constraints and identifying...

Millimeter wave propagation in a short outdoor link using the vectorial Gaussian beam tracing method

    , Article 2006 Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference, APMC, Yokohama, 12 December 2006 through 15 December 2006 ; Volume 3 , 2006 , Pages 1851-1854 ; 4902339102 (ISBN); 9784902339109 (ISBN) Shabani, M ; Shishegar, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The 3D vectorial Gaussian beam tracing method is used to model a short 62.4-GHz link in a simple urban environment. First the Gabor expansion method with a wide-waisted window function is utilized to expand the known far field pattern of the transmitter antenna into a set of Gaussian beams and then these beams are propagated in space until they impinge on a building wall or ground, on which a phase matching method is used to find the reflected Gaussian beams. We will also concisely introduce a new method to consider 3D GB diffraction when incident on a wedge. Overall coverage map shows the dominant effect of shadowing in the millimeter wave band. Received mean signal power in a line of sight...
