    Abstract
In the current research, the main concern is to verify the behavior of gravelly soils. To that matter, with taking use of CU triaxial tests and variations in parameters of interest, gradation, relative density, isotropic pressure and anisotropy of consolidation during the tests, the effects on the steady state condition and monotonic liquefaction of gravelly soils are investigated. The test results indicated that as the isotropic pressure increases, percentage increase of steady state strength resulting from the increase of relative density will decrease. Moreover, with the increase of anisotropy of consolidation, the effect of relative density on steady state strength and built-up pore...

    Abstract
Standard Penetration Test (SPT) is the most commonly used insitu test for soil characterization, including the liquefaction resistance. Many studies have sought to correlate SPT number to cyclic resistance ratio (CRR) as a frequently-used approach for assessment of liquefaction potential. However, it has been shown that SPT has major deficiencies (e.g., inaccuracy in coarse sands and clays) which have given rise to development and utilization of new characterization methods such as geophysical tests (e.g., down-hole and cross-hole). In this paper, a comparison is made between the results of SPT and geophysical tests in three boreholes through the body and foundation of Mahabad Dam (located...

    Abstract
According to available information and references, water leakage and internal erosion in bodies and foundations of embankment dams are the main reasons of many problems and failures. To reduce this risk in foundation, plastic cut off walls is one of the most reliable solutions. In this research the effect of specimen's age on the mechanical properties of plastic concrete was studied. This paper summarizes the test results which were conducted in unconfined and triaxial state. Plastic concrete specimens were prepared in the laboratory condition using the materials provided from the Silve dam site. Test results have shown that the time and confining pressure extremely affect the mechanical...

The effect of calcite cementation on the mechanical behavior of gravely sands

, Article 14th Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, 23 May 2011 through 27 May 2011, Hong Kong ; 2011 Adl, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The behavior of a cemented gravely sand is studied using triaxial tests. Undrained tests were performed on saturated specimens, and stress-strain characteristics of the soil, along with volumetric and pore pressure changes, were recognized. Artificially cemented samples are prepared using calcite crystallization as the cementing agent in different percentages. The tests were done in usual range of confining pressures, from 50 to 1200 kPa. The results shows that dilation occurs even at highest confining pressure and least cement content. Also the friction angle of soils increases slightly with cement content, but cohesion intercept increasing is more noticeable

    Abstract
The volume change that occurs due to membrane penetration into peripheral voids of gravelly specimens during hydrostatic compression test in a conventional triaxial apparatus is studied by performing a set of hydrostatic compression tests on gravelly specimens with different initial relative densities. During the isotropic loading on the specimens, the total volume changes of the specimens were determined by measuring the amount of water seeping out of the specimens at different loading steps. Image processing technique was implemented simultaneously to determine the skeletal volume changes of the specimens. In this regard specimens were compressed to isotopic pressures from 10 to 500 kPa...

    Abstract
The behavior of a cemented gravely sand is studied using triaxial tests. Drained and undrained tests were performed on dry and saturated specimens, and stress-strain characteristics of the soil, along with volumetric and pore pressure changes, were identified. The gypsum plaster was used as the cement agent and was mixed with the soil in different percentages. The tests were done in the usual range of confining pressures, from 25 to 500 kPa. Test results show that dilation occurs even at the highest confining stress and the least cement content. The behavior of the cemented soil is found to be more brittle in drained condition than the undrained one. However, the brittleness of soil...

    Abstract
The majority of the city of Tehran, Iran has been developed on cemented coarse-grained alluvium. In order to understand the mechanical behavior of this soil, a series of triaxial compression tests (CD, CU) were performed on uncemented and artificially cemented samples. Hydrated lime was used as the cementation agent for sample preparation to model the Tehran cemented deposit. The tests were performed on artificially cemented samples after an appropriate curing time. The effect of confining pressure, cement content and fine content is investigated in this research. The tests results show that peak shear strength is followed by strain softening for all cemented samples. Shear strength...

    Abstract
An experimental study is conducted to measure small-strain shear modulus of clay-cement mixture using bender element apparatus setup in a triaxial cell. Bender element tests were conducted on cement-treated soils and the results were analyzed to study the variation of shear modulus properties of soil specimens at different cement contents, confining pressures, curing times, and compaction moisture contents. Based on the obtained results increasing the cement ratio has a significant effect on the small-strain shear modulus of the treated soils, and this effect signifies with increasing the moisture content and curing time. Rates of shear modulus enhancements due to cement content, curing...

    Abstract
In this study, a coupled numerical approach based on Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) and Discrete Element Method (DEM) is employed for two-dimensional simulation of fluid flow in deformable particulate media comprising of movable circular particles. The developed LB-DE code is validated against the results of a bi-axial shear test as well as two well-known benchmark problems including settling of a circular particle under gravity force inside a viscous fluid, and motion of a neutrally buoyant particle released in a Poiseuille flow. The verified code is then utilized for simulation of "Sand Production" phenomenon which is of importance for oil producing wells in weakly cemented sandstone...

A three-invariant hardening plasticity for numerical simulation of powder forming processes via the arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian FE model

    , Article International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering ; Volume 66, Issue 5 , 2006 , Pages 843-877 ; 00295981 (ISSN) Khoei, A. R ; Azami, A. R ; Anahid, M ; Lewis, R. W ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a three-invariant cap plasticity model with an isotropic hardening rule is presented for numerical simulation of powder compaction processes. A general form is developed for single-cap plasticity which can be compared with some common double-surface plasticity models proposed for powders in literature. The constitutive elasto-plastic matrix and its components are derived based on the definition of yield surface, hardening parameter and non-linear elastic behaviour, as function of relative density of powder. Different aspects of the new single plasticity are illustrated by generating the classical plasticity models as special cases of the proposed model. The procedure for...

    Abstract
The liquefaction phenomenon is usually accompanied by a large amount of settlement. Based on the observations made in past earthquakes, ground improvement by densification is one of the most useful approaches to reduce the liquefaction-induced settlement. Currently, there is no analytical solution for evaluation of the amount of settlement and tilting of footings that are constructed on densified ground surrounded by liquefiable soil. A number of factors, such as underlying soil properties, dimensions of the footing and earthquake loading characteristics, cause the problem to become complicated. In this paper, the dynamic response of shallow foundations on both liquefiable and...
