Suitable Cost Escalation Indices for Volatile Economic Conditions

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Raieszadeh, Abbas (Author) ; Mortaheb, Mohammad Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Under volatile economic conditions, where inflation is high and market prices of materials, labor, and equipment change unexpectedly, construction cost rise. To avoid the disruption of work, the owner may be required to compensate the contractors in a way that the excess construction cost is partially or completely covered. This compensation should be provided to the contractors in a way that is authorized by the laws and regulations under which the contract is stipulated. Hence it is essential to have the proper mechanism, for sharing the burden of cost overruns caused by unforeseen economic conditions.
In Iran, the payment scheme for the majority of the medium-and large-scale contracts...

Application-aware Redundancy insertion in SIMT Processors for Improving Performance and Cost

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Naghashi, Mona (Author) ; Hessabi, Shaahin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, the use of redundancy components on chips is the best method for replacing defective components on chip. This method improves yield parameter and thus reduces the manufacturing cost of a chip. However, in most of yield improvement methods, redundancy is used when the main components of a chip are defective, which is called cold redundancy. In this project, the manufacturing cost and yield parameters of chips, when using hot redundancy in SIMT processors is investigated. In the case of occurring defect on the chip, the hot redundant components are used for improving yield. Otherwise, they are used in order to improve the performance of chip. In this project, we examine systems,...

Fog harvesting: combination and comparison of different methods to maximize the collection efficiency

    , Article SN Applied Sciences ; Volume 3, Issue 4 , 2021 ; 25233971 (ISSN) Sharifvaghefi, S ; Kazerooni, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Nature  2021
    Abstract
Fog harvesting is an unconventional source of water that can be used in some regions with water scarcity to overcome water shortages. The most commonly used collectors are meshes which have intrinsic limitations, the most important of which are clogging and aerodynamic deviation of droplets around the wires. Here, three techniques are compared and combined to overcome these limitations, i.e., replacing the mesh with an array of vertical wires, addition of a hydrophobic layer to the wires, and forcing the ionized droplets to move toward the wires by applying an electric field. The combination of these techniques was found to result in higher fog harvesting efficiency compared to each...

Value-Based Assessment of Common Structural Systems in the Mass Housing Industry Considering Life Cycle Cost with the Endurance Time Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shamsi, Amir Mohammad (Author) ; Esmaeil Pourestekanchi, Homayoon (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this research is to evaluate and compare the performance of common concrete and steel structural systems in the construction industry under various parameters, including initial construction cost, lifetime seismic losses, end-of-life costs of the structure, and simultaneous consideration of these parameters. In this regard, a residential building with real architectural plans and details was designed for five different structural systems, both concrete and steel, and their initial construction costs were calculated using executive drawings. Then, using Endurance Time dynamic analysis, the structural responses under probable seismic hazard levels was determined, and based on...

Solar absorption chiller optimization by using genetic algorithms

    , Article ASME 2010 4th International Conference on Energy Sustainability, ES 2010, 17 May 2010 through 22 May 2010, Phoenix, AZ ; Volume 2 , 2010 , Pages 173-183 ; 9780791843949 (ISBN) Abbasi Godarzi, A ; Samimi, J ; Jalilian, M ; Vesaghi, M. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
The main propose of this research is providing a tool for suitable modeling, increase efficiency and decrease construction cost of solar absorption chiller. At first, the solar absorption chiller is modeled by the thermodynamic laws. Then, this model is converted to the new standard mathematical programming model with considering all technical and economic constrains. This mathematical model is optimized by Genetic algorithm (GA). After applying GA, optimized parameters of chiller heat exchanger designing and its electricity consumption are calculated. These parameters consist of heat exchanger effectiveness, heat transfer cross section area, heat transfer coefficient, efficiency of pump and...

Second law based analysis of supplementary firing effects on the Heat Recovery Steam Generator in a combined cycle power plant

    , Article ASME 2010 10th Biennial Conference on Engineering Systems Design and Analysis, ESDA2010, 12 July 2010 through 14 July 2010, Istanbul ; Volume 1 , 2010 , Pages 201-209 ; 9780791849156 (ISBN) Karrabi, H ; Rasoulipour, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
The supplementary firing is one of the techniques which are used to increase the output power of the combined cycle power plants (CCPP). The low construction cost per generated power encourages designers to consider it in the new CCPP. In this paper the thermal and exergy analyses of HRSG for various operating conditions in variation of loads and variation of ambient temperature carried out. They are based on the performance test data at different operating conditions. The objective of these analyses is to present the effects of supplementary firing on gross power output, combined cycle efficiency and the exergy loss in Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) devices at different ambient...
