    Semianalytical solutions for contaminant transport under variable velocity field in a coastal aquifer

    Abstract
    Existing closed-form solutions of contaminant transport problems are limited by the mathematically convenient assumption of uniform flow. These solutions cannot be used to investigate contaminant transport in coastal aquifers where seawater intrusion induces a variable velocity field. An adaptation of the Fourier-Galerkin method is introduced to obtain semi-analytical solutions for contaminant transport in a confined coastal aquifer in which the saltwater wedge is in equilibrium with a freshwater discharge flow.     The instability and contamination leakage through tailings dams is one of the major problems of them. These dams are usually constructed through self-consolidation with minimum compaction effort, so special attention must be given to the stability of these structures. In addition, tailings dams contain considerable amounts of metals and chemically soluble contaminants resulting from mining processes in their reservoirs, making them more likely to leak contamination from the dam's foundation and body, causing pollution downstream.     Abstract
    In naturally fractured reservoirs, modeling of mass transfer between matrix blocks and fractures is an important subject during gas injection or contaminant transport. This study focuses on developing an exact analytical solution to transient tracer transport problem along a discrete fracture in a porous rock matrix. Using Gauss-Legendre quadrature, an expression was obtained in the form of a double integral which is considered as the general transient solution.
