Analyzing Airport Saturation Based on Continuous Descent Approach

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Norouzi, Ramin (Author) ; Malaek, Mohamad Bagher (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Airport saturation is one of the important issues which have always been of the specialists’ concern. One of the major applications of this subject is at the airport approach problems. While using current conventional approach procedures have many disadvantages regarding high fuel consumption and subsequent much environmental and noise pollution, the CDA concept which is one of the modern topics introduced in consequence of free flight theory, has less such disadvantages compared to conventional approach. Subject of this study is to investigate whether Procedural approach or CDA saturates an aiport sooner if the traffic flow increases. In this dissertation, using BADA database, CDA...

Terminal holding time minimization by dynamic CDA routing algorithm

    , Article 29th Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences, ICAS 2014 ; September , 2014 ; ISBN: 3932182804 Malaek, S. M ; Enayatollahi, F ; Parastari, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This article is focused on the application of 'Continuous Descent Approach' [CDA] to reduce the overall terminal traffic wastage of time and fuel consumption as well as reducing environmental emissions. This goal is achieved by introducing an online alternative CDA route under management of a heuristic optimization algorithm that minimizes the overall holding time. Performing a study on Atlanta international Hartsfield-Jackson airport, ATL, the results show considerable 60% decrease in cost function. Such achievement encourages the idea of implementing 'Dynamic CDA Routing Algorithm' [DCRA]

    Abstract
Over the last decade, there has been an increase in air transportation, which has raised awareness to provide necessary procedures to respond to air transportation demands and reduce delay costs. One such procedure, 'performance-based navigation (PBN),' currently studied, is expected to increase the airspace capacity based on aircraft's individual performances. This research describes an efficient and expandable model for allocating standard terminal arrival route during continuous descent approach (CDA) that effectively uses PBN requirements. As a case study, we have considered the 'Atlanta International Airport' and verified the model's accuracy using real-time traffic data. The model is...

Terminal Area Traffic Management Using LASER Technology

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Enayatollahi, Fatemeh (Author) ; Malaek, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, possibility and advanteges of dynamic descent route assignment during busy traffics and implementing changes within navigation infrastructure is examined. Facilitating Continuous Descent Approaches (CDA) as optimum descent paths is the main goal of this research. One advantage of this project with respect to previous works in this field is dynamic CDA routing between cruise altitude and Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) entry to meet the demand of traffic during peak hours. The other superiority is proposition of LASER technology as an alternative/backup NAVAID system in order to facilitate the latter.Terminal area of Hartsfield-Jackson international airport with real...
