Microreactor Synthesis of Medicine by Catalyzed Coupling Reaction

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hashemnezhad, Emad (Author) ; Kazemeini, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Hosseinpour, Vahid (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is the most common type of pulmonary fibrosis that causes ulcers inside the lungs. In addition to Nintedanib, Pirfenidone is currently the only compound approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2014 for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Meanwhile, in the pharmaceutical industry, drug synthesis is usually done through batch-wise processes, and pirfenidone is currently only produced through batch-wise processes. Hence, this study aims to change the synthesis method of this drug, which is traditionally performed through batch-wise processes, to a continuous flow process. Therefore, a micro-reactor technology can be adopted which offers a...

Prediction of flooding in a pulsed packed column for continuous pertraction of dysprosium by an emulsion liquid membrane

    , Article Chemical Engineering and Processing - Process Intensification ; Volume 169 , 2021 ; 02552701 (ISSN) Sadehlari, F ; Bastani, D ; Safdari, J ; Raji, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2021
    Abstract
For the first time, Dysprosium was extracted by the novel method of emulsion liquid membrane in a pulsed packed column in a continuous process. Emulsion liquid membrane (ELM) was comprised of D2EHPA (di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid) as carrier and Span 80 (Polysorbate 80) as the surfactant in kerosene as the diluent and nitric acid as internal phase. In this work, the packed column was characterized from a hydrodynamic point of view including flooding condition and holdup at flooding points. Operational parameters affecting the flooding points, such as pulsation intensity and flow rate of continuous and dispersed phases have been studied. It was found that increase in pulsation intensity up...

Continuous Catalytic Synthesis of Medicine Through a Micro-Reactor System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jahangirifard, Shayan (Author) ; Kazemeini, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Hosseinpour, Vahid (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the past decades, the production of various active pharmaceutical ingredients in batch processes was common. But today, the approach of pharmaceutical companies has changed and the use of the equipment and continuous processes such as microreactors has become common for reasons of safety, better mass and heat transfer, reduction of operators, and ease of scale-up. Unlike many top-selling drugs such as Ibuprofen and Artemisinin, Clopidogrel, the world's third best-selling drug needed by cardiac patients, has been manufactured only in batch processes. Due to the increase in the average age of the population, the urgent need for the use of Plavix (clopidogrel) has increased in recent years....

Integrated system of multiple batches to evaluate the continuous performance of microbial cells in decolourization processes

    , Article Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering ; Volume 6, Issue 1 , February , 2018 , Pages 728-735 ; 22133437 (ISSN) Vatandoostarani, S ; Bagheri Lotfabad, T ; Heidarinasab, A ; Ebadipour, N ; Yaghmaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Azo dye degradation in wastewater treatment is a subject which has garnered the attention of many research studies. In this study, an innovative approach, namely, an integrated system of five batches (ISFB), was developed to investigate the capability of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 9763 for continuous degradation of methyl red as a representative azo dye. Toward this end, an expanded immobilized microbial bed (EIMB) reactor was established with a bed of encapsulated yeast cells in sodium alginate. EIMB reactor was run in two modes, single batch and ISFB. Moreover, durability of the microbial cells was evaluated by repeating the continuous decolourization eight sequential times in EIMB at...

Superhydrophobic home-made polyurethane sponges for versatile and cost-effective oil and water separation

    Abstract
Utilizing 3D and 2D porous materials modified by a superhydrophobic/philic coating for quick removal of oil from water and a continuous process of oil/water separation, respectively, has attracted a lot of attention recently. Here we report the separation capacities of one commercial and three home-made sponges, sprayed by a superhydrophobic coating, for a broad range of oils and solvents. The contact angle of water on the coated sponges is 162.5˚, whereas the pristine sponge shows a contact angle of 91.8˚ (these values are for sponge D which had the highest absorption capacity). We investigate the effects of the density of sponges and the dynamic viscosity of oils and solvents on the...

Column study of Cr (VI) adsorption onto modified silica-polyacrylamide microspheres composite

    , Article Chemical Engineering Journal ; Volume 210 , 2012 , Pages 280-288 ; 13858947 (ISSN) Karimi, M ; Shojaei, A ; Nematollahzadeh, A ; Abdekhodaie, M. J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Adsorption of Cr (VI) from aqueous solution was studied using a continuous fixed bed column which is packed with a new micro-porous composite particle developed in this study. This composite particle is composed of silica porous particle in which acrylamide is polymerized within the pore regions of the silica particles. The composite particle was supposed to maintain the mechanical properties of polyacrylamide as efficient absorbent to serve appropriately in the continuous processes. In order to enhance the adsorption capacity of the composite particle, it was modified with ethylenediamine. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and...
