Study of the Effect of Canopy Lateral Incidence Angle on Autonomous Guidance and Control of Parafoil-Payload System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hajibabei, Reza (Author) ; Saghafi, Fariborz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The trailing edge brakes are the conventional controller mechanisms for autonomous precision delivery parafoil systems. Asymetric braking creates differential drag on the left and right sides of canopy leading to generation of turn rate, whereas symmetric deflection changes the aangle of attack which in turn affects airspeed and limit the glide slope. In the current work , in addition to the conventional controller , the canopy is considered to have the ability of changing its longitudinal and lateral incidence angles. This can be achieved by changing the length of sidelong suspension lines.Unlike brakes, the lateral incidence angle creates heavily coupling in lateral dynamics. The results...

The Effect of Ownership Structure and Board Composition as Corporate Governance Mechanisms on Coroporate Value

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sadighian, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Mashayekhi, Ali Naghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research we examine the effects of internal corporate governance mechanisms on shareholder value of 247 firms that were accepted in Tehran Stock Exchange. The main focus is on ownership structure and board composition. Owners with different identities affect shareholder value both directly and to some extent indirectly (through affecting board composition). We measured firm value using 2 different measures: relative growth of share price and market to book value of the firm. Controlling for industry effects, considering different levels of competitiveness, we find that private owners affect firm value more positively than governments and so do institutional investors more than...

Simulation of the Cellular Dynamics of Bone Remodeling and its Control Mechanisms

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Amiri, Behnam (Author) ; Zohoor, Hassan (Supervisor) ; Sohrabpour, Saeed (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Bone is one of the most important biomechanical organs in animal bodies which comprises of a dynamic tissue that can change its internal structure through remodeling process. A comprehensive understanding of this process is of great significance in prevention and cure of many bone diseases. Due to the special conditions of hard bone tissue, empirical studies on the details of bone processes is very costly and time consuming. Thus, mathematical models and in silico simulations are key to unraveling how bone homeostasis imbalance can lead to pathological conditions. Therefore, in the recent years, there has been an increasing interest in modeling bone remodeling process in cellular level. In...

Failure and Buckling Control of Smart Morphing Composite using Nonlinear Finite Element Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zareie, Shahin (Author) ; Zabihollah, Abolghasem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Structures that change shapes are often called morphing structures. Smart morphing composites refer to the morphing structures that can detect the change in conditions and, through a control mechanism, command the actuators to maintain the stability and/or perform a new task. The present report provides a framework on the eld of smart morphing composite structures. The emphasis on this work is on, particularly, multi-stable composite structures with capability to detect the new conditions and adapt themselves to properly respond to them. Due to cycling nature of applied load on morphing, these structures are vulnerable to failure due to fatigue. A failure control mechanism utilizing a...

    , Article Physical Review Research ; Volume 3, Issue 3 , 2021 ; 26431564 (ISSN) Khazali, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Physical Society  2021
    Abstract
The current advances in the field of ultracold atoms and atomic traps recall new controllable long-range interactions. These interactions are expected to extend the range of realizable quantum algorithms as well as provide new control mechanisms for the new types of quantum matters. This Letter presents special interatomic interactions between Rydberg-dressed atoms by manipulating the lasers' linewidth. The proposed interaction features a hybrid spatial profile containing plateaus and Gaussian peaks. Combined with dynamic control over the sign and strength of individual interaction elements, the Rydberg noisy-dressing (RnD) scheme provides a valuable interaction toolbox for quantum...

Design and Analysis of a Novel Adaptive Cross-Layer Error Control for Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Naderi, Mohammad Yousof (Author) ; Rabiee, Hamid Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Wireless sensor network (WSN) multimedia applications impose new challenges in the design of algorithms and communication protocols for sensor networks. Indeed, wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) must provide relatively high throughput and low end-to-end delay and jitter while being energy-efficient. In view of these challenges, error control is an important mechanism which enables us to provide robust and high quality multimedia communication in WSNs. In this thesis, we first perform a comprehensive performance evaluation of different error control schemes for multimedia communication over WSNs. The results of our analysis show how wireless channel errors can affect the performance...

Improving the Reliability of Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jalali, Fatemeh (Author) ; Ejlali , Ali Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Energy harvesters are used in today’s Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) to harvest the energy from the environment. One of the important advantages of the energy harvesting sensor networks over battery-operated sensor networks is that the use of the energy harvester prolongs the life time of the nodes, while a battery-operated node becomes useless once its energy runs out. Although an energy harvester can provide a supply source with a lifetime much greater than a battery, the amount of available energy for an energy harvesting system is a random variable and is not as predictable as the energy of a battery. This unpredictability may cause reliability problems. In order to solve the existing...

Evaluation of Adaptability in Biological Models

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammadie Zand, Armin (Author) ; Tavazoei, Mohammad Saleh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Adaptation is a recurring phenomenon in biology by which biochemical systems can robustly- and in some cases completely- adapt their regulated outputs to en- vironmental disturbances and uncertainties. In nature, such a feature has been evolved in biological circuits through the construction of integral feedback control structures. Three types of biologically plausible controllers have been recently in- troduced which can ensure the existence of robust perfect adaptation for arbitrary plants. In this thesis, the main purpose is to have a comparison between them. To this end, we first find a stability criterion to relate the system’s stability with its internal parameters. We then calculate a...

    Abstract
Needle insertion into the soft tissue has been the subject of many studies during the last decade, while needle control has become a crucial training tool, evaluating surgeon's skills in such critical incision. This study considers a model-based dynamics equation for the needle movement through the soft tissue. In the proposed model, the force distribution along the needle shaft is estimated through the use of tissue deformation data and tissue model. A novel algorithm for the needle control simulation is also proposed based on the developed dynamics equation of the needle movement. To point out the role of mechanical properties of the soft tissue, an inverse dynamics control method is used...

    Abstract
Hybrid Mobile Applications are a new generation of mobile applications that have recently introduced new security challenges. In these applications, untrusted web content, such as an advertisement inside an embedded browser, has the same privileges as the entire application and can directly access the device resources. Unfortunately, existing access control mechanisms are very coarse-grained and do not provide adequate facilities for fine-grained access rule definition and enforcement in hybrid mobile applications. In this paper, we propose a fine-grained access control mechanism for privilege separation in hybrid mobile applications. Our proposed access control mechanism, called...

    Abstract
In diffusive molecular communication (DMC), the transmitter has to be able to control the release of signaling molecules for modulation of the information bits. In natural cells, pumping ions is an important control mechanism for releasing molecules which is carried out by ion pumps embedded in the membrane. The activity of the ion pumps is controlled by a driving parameter. In particular, light driven pumps are controlled by light intensity and enable a high degree of spatial and temporal control for modulation functionality. In this paper, a modulator based on ion pumps is proposed for DMC which controls the release rate of the molecules from the transmitter by modulating a light intensity...

    Abstract
Limited energy in each node is the major design constraint in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To overcome this limit, wireless rechargeable sensor networks (WRSNs) have been proposed and studied extensively over the last few years. In a typical WRSN, batteries in sensor nodes can be replenished by a mobile charger that periodically travels along a certain trajectory in the sensing area. To maximize the charged energy in sensor nodes, one fundamental question is how to control the traveling velocity of the charger. In this paper, we first identify the optimal velocity control as a key design objective of mobile wireless charging in WRSNs. We then formulate the optimal charger velocity...

    , Article ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, Proceedings (IMECE), 12 November 2010 through 18 November 2010, Vancouver, BC ; Volume 8, Issue PARTS A AND B , 2010 , Pages 901-909 ; 9780791844458 (ISBN) Roshanghalb, F ; Mortazavi, J ; Alasty, A ; Sayyaadi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper a fuzzy control strategy of autonomous multiagent systems is presented. The main purpose is to obtain an improvement on the results of designed sliding mode controllers in previous articles using supervisory fuzzy controller. Similarly, a quasi-static swarm model in ndimensional space is introduced wherein the inter-individual interactions are based on artificial potential functions; and the motions of members are in direction with the negative gradient of the combined potentials which are the result of a balance between inter-individual interactions and the simultaneous interactions of the swarm members with their environment. Then a general model for vehicle dynamics of each...

    Abstract
In order to overcome the shortcomings of the recent frameworks and mechanisms for semantic-based access control, this paper presents a semantic-based, context-aware, and multi-domain enabled framework implementing a semantic-based access control mechanism for Semantic Web. The access control framework is based on the MA(DL)2 model, which takes the semantic relationships among different entities into account. The framework handles the Semantic Web context by classifying and representing it through an ontology. Considering the MA(DL)2 model, the framework assumes SemanticWeb having some overlapped domains, which each contains an authority and a security agent. As a domain authority...

Grain growth kinetics and electrical properties of CuO doped SnO2-based varistors

    , Article Journal of Alloys and Compounds ; Volume 770 , 2019 , Pages 784-791 ; 09258388 (ISSN) Mahmoudi, P ; Nemati, A ; Maleki Shahraki, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
Up to now, attempts for developing coarse-grained SnO2-based varistors which exhibit high nonlinearity property at lower voltage have become a challenge without any prominent result because of its unknown grain growth mechanism. In this study, the effect of CuO addition to SnO2-based varistors as a grain growth enhancer additive on microstructural development, grain growth kinetics, and electrical properties was investigated. The characterization of grain growth kinetics showed that CuO addition encouraged grain growth and enhanced the grains size as it could be seen in the activation energy which decreased from 594 kJ/mol to 364 kJ/mol. In the samples with a low amount of CuO, the solute...

Springer Science and Business Media B.V  2020
    Abstract
Gravity drainage is known as the controlling mechanism of oil recovery in naturally fractured reservoirs. The efficiency of this mechanism is controlled by block-to-block interactions through capillary continuity and/or reinfiltration processes. In this study, at first, several free-fall gravity drainage experiments were conducted on a well-designed three-block apparatus and the role of tilt angle, spacers’ permeability, wettability and effective contact area (representing a different status of the block-to-block interactions between matrix blocks) on the recovery efficiency were investigated. Then, an experimental-based numerical model of free-fall gravity drainage process was developed,...

Swirl intensity as a control mechanism for methane purification in supersonic gas separators

, Article Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering ; Volume 83 , 2020 Ghorbanian, K ; Amini Magham, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2020
    Abstract
Supersonic gas separator is proposed for methane purification. One-dimensional analysis is performed to examine the design aspects associated with the converging-diverging nozzle and the liquid separation chamber. The results indicate that at low swirl intensities, the separation chamber length is about 100 times of the nozzle throat. Increasing the swirl intensity would lower this length sharply and it will be less than 10 for swirl intensity of unity which is equivalent to a swirl angle of 45°. In addition, a sensitivity analysis of the separator performance to the inlet conditions like the temperature, pressure, and composition of the mixture is carried out. It is observed that increasing...

    Abstract
To achieve high rate of data transfer, tape mechanisms must be able to transport the tape with a constant velocity for scanning. During this process, it is desired to make the rise time minimized without timing and data transfer errors. In this paper, three servo systems including the take-up and supply reel servos for tape tension control and capstan servo for speed control are considered. So, tape transport mechanisms can be described with a nonlinear multi-input multi-output system (MIMO). After state-space representation of the problem, feedback control is designed for tracking objective. It should be mentioned that an increase in the speed of time response of system corresponds to an...

Assessment of a practical technique for active control of sound using microphone and speaker

    Abstract
In this analytical study, it has been desired to develop a practical and simple control mechanism to control, at a given point and its neighborhood, the sound arriving from a distant source, assuming that a primary pure-tone sound pressure is propagated from a relatively far distance. The control model consists of a microphone as a sensor for measuring the sound pressure and a loud speaker for applying the control force. Corresponding equations have been developed to determine an optimum control force, and afterwards a parametric study on the factors affecting the control results has been performed. The results show that the control system can significantly reduce low frequency sound...
