    Maximal rank correlation

    , Article IEEE Communications Letters ; Volume 20, Issue 1 , 2016 , Pages 117-120 ; 10897798 (ISSN) Etesami, O ; Gohari, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Based on the notion of maximal correlation, we introduce a new measure of correlation between two different rankings of the same group of items. Our measure captures various types of correlation detected in previous measures of rank correlation like the Spearman correlation and the Kendall tau correlation. We show that the maximal rank correlation satisfies the data processing and tensorization properties (that make ordinary maximal correlation applicable to problems in information theory). Furthermore, MRC is shown to be intimately related to the FKG inequality. Finally, we pose the problem of the complexity of the computation of this new measure. We make partial progress by giving a simple...

A simple correlation to estimate natural gas viscosity

, Article Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering ; Volume 20 , September 2014 , Pages 50–57 Jarrahian, A ; Heidaryan, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A general investigation of the viscosity of natural gas as a function of temperature, pressure and composition was carried out to develop a generalized correlation. The model obtained was based on 3231 data points of 29 multicomponent mixtures in wide ranges of pressures (0.1-137.8MPa), temperatures (241-473K) and specific gravities (0.573-1.337). Correction terms for non-hydrocarbons of hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen were up to 70, 54.4 and 15.8 of mole percent, respectively. The arithmetic average of the model's absolute error was found to be 5.05%, which is acceptable in engineering calculations and has superiority over other methods in its class

Empirical study in finite correlation coefficient in two phase estimation

    , Article International Journal of Social Economics ; Volume 31, Issue 10 , 2004 , Pages 890-902 ; 03068293 (ISSN) Khoshnevisan, M ; Kaymarm, F ; Singh, H. P ; Singh, R ; Smarandache, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2004
    Abstract
This paper proposes a class of estimators for population correlation coefficient when information about the population mean and population variance of one of the variables is not available but information about these parameters of another variable (auxiliary) is available, in two phase sampling and analyzes its properties. Optimum estimator in the class is identified with its variance formula. The estimators of the class involve unknown constants whose optimum values depend on unknown population parameters. In earlier research it has been shown that when these population parameters are replaced by their consistent estimates the resulting class of estimators has the same asymptotic variance...

Fast correlation attacks on the summation generator

    , Article Journal of Cryptology ; Volume 13, Issue 2 , 2000 , Pages 245-262 ; 09332790 (ISSN) Golić, J. D ; Salmasizadeh, M ; Dawson, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Abstract. The linear sequential circuit approximation method for combiners with memory is used to find mutually correlated linear transforms of the input and output sequences in the well-known summation generator with any number of inputs. It is shown that the determined correlation coefficient is large enough for applying a fast correlation attack to the output sequence to reconstruct the initial states of the input linear feedback shift registers. The proposed attack is based on iterative probabilistic decoding and appropriately generated low-weight parity-checks. The required output sequence length and the computational complexity are both derived. Successful experimental results for the...

Studying emotion through nonlinear processing of EEG

    , Article Procedia - Social and Behavioral Sciences ; Volume 32 , 2012 , Pages 163-169 ; 18770428 (ISSN) Hoseingholizade, S ; Golpaygani, M. R. H ; Monfared, A. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this article we study the effects of emotion on brain activity through nonlinear processing of EEG. EEG was recorded from 19 sites (10-20systems) in different states of brain activity; induced by emotionally valance music stimulus and also during no-task resting states. Then, we compared the EEG complexity of the rest condition with each emotional states. After that we determined the locations in which correlation dimension was changed in different states through one-way ANOVA test. In this study four excerpts of music from both Iranian traditional music and Western classical music, two negative valance and two positive valance pieces, were selected according to the results of...

    Monotone measures for non-local correlations

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Information Theory ; Volume 61, Issue 9 , 2015 , Pages 5185-5208 ; 00189448 (ISSN) Beigi, S ; Gohari, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Non-locality is the phenomenon of observing strong correlations among the outcomes of local measurements of a multipartite physical system. No-signaling boxes are the abstract objects for studying non-locality, and wirings are local operations on the space of no-signaling boxes. This means that, no matter how non-local the nature is, the set of physical non-local correlations must be closed under wirings. Then, one approach to identify the non-locality of nature is to characterize the closed sets of non-local correlations. Although non-trivial examples of wirings of no-signaling boxes are known, there is no systematic way to study wirings. In particular, given a set of no-signaling boxes, we...

Satellite and ground-based assessment of middle east meteorological parameters impact on dust activities in western iran

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 23, Issue 6 , 2016 , Pages 2478-2493 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Kermanshah, A ; Sotoudeheian, S ; Tajrishy, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Sharif University of Technology  2016
    Abstract
In this article, the relation between meteorological parameters and dust activities in western Iran has been studied. Satellite-based data achieved from TOMS are used to investigate the dust activities within a time period of 30 years. In the first part of this study, we examine the statistical trend of Aerosol Index (AI) and local meteorological parameters in 15 different stations. The same patterns of AI variations in all stations indicate that this region has always been subjected to dust storms which originate from similar sources in the neighboring countries that could be known as a sole dust transfer system. In the second part, we investigate the spatial correlation between the...

Localization in the Anderson model with long-range correlated hopping and on-site disorders

    , Article Waves in Random and Complex Media ; Volume 25, Issue 1 , 2014 , Pages 9-17 ; ISSN: 17455030 Lotfallahzadeh, S ; Anvari, M ; Ekhtiary, N ; Esmailpour, A ; Tabar, M. R. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We study the metal–insulator transition in one-dimensional Anderson binary alloy with long-range disordered hopping integrals and on-site energies using the transfer matrix method. In this model, the on-site energies and hopping integrals are distributed randomly with long-range correlations characterized by power spectrum of the type (Formula presented.), with different exponents (Formula presented.) and (Formula presented.), respectively. We determine the critical value of long-range correlation exponent of hopping integral (Formula presented.) in the presence of only off-diagonal disorder in which the transition from localized to extended states occurs in thermodynamic limit. When both of...

Exploiting structural information of data in active learning

, Article Artificial Intelligence and Soft Computing: Lecture Notes in Computer Science ; Volume 8468 LNAI, Issue PART 2 , 2014 , Pages 796-808 Shadloo, Maryam ; Beigy, Hamid ; Haghiri, Siavash ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In recent years, the active learning algorithms have focused on combining correlation criterion and uncertainty criterion for evaluating instances. Although these criteria might be useful, applying these measures on whole input space globally may lead to inefficient selected instances for active learning. The proposed method takes advantage of clustering to partition input space to subspaces. Then it exploits both labeled and unlabeled data locally for selection of instances by using a graph-based active learning. We define a novel utility score for selecting clusters by combining uncertainty criterion, local entropy of clusters and the factor of contribution of each cluster in queries....

Effect of concentration on hydrodynamic size of magnetite-based ferrofluid as a potential MRI contrast agent

, Article Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects ; 2013 ; 09277757 (ISSN) Ahmadi, R ; Gu, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In this work, ferrofluids containing dextran coated magnetite nanoparticles have been synthesized via co-precipitation method. FT-IR results verified presence of dextran molecules on the particles surface. TEM results showed that mean particle size is 7.23 nm, while mean hydrodynamic size determined via PCS technique varies between 39.8 and 125.8 nm depending on the ferrofluid concentration. The maximum hydrodynamic size was obtained in mid concentrations. To the best of our knowledge, effect of concentration on mean hydrodynamic size has not been systematically studied before. VSM results confirmed the superparamagnetic behavior of the synthesized nanoparticles with saturation magnetization...

Surface polaron formation in the holstein model

    , Article Physical Review B - Condensed Matter and Materials Physics ; Volume 80, Issue 15 , 2009 ; 10980121 (ISSN) Nourafkan, R ; Capone, M ; Nafari, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
The effect of a solid-vacuum interface on the properties of a strongly coupled electron-phonon system is analyzed using dynamical mean-field theory to solve the Holstein model in a semi-infinite cubic lattice. Polaron formation is found to occur more easily, i.e., for a weaker electron-phonon coupling, on the surface than in the bulk. On the other hand, the metal-insulator transition associated with the binding of polarons takes place at a unique critical strength in the bulk and at the surface. © 2009 The American Physical Society

    Thermodynamically optimal creation of correlations

    , Article Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical ; Volume 52, Issue 46 , 2019 ; 17518113 (ISSN) Bakhshinezhad, F ; Clivaz, F ; Vitagliano, G ; Erker, P ; Rezakhani, A ; Huber, M ; Friis, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Correlations lie at the heart of almost all scientific predictions. It is therefore of interest to ask whether there exist general limitations to the amount of correlations that can be created at a finite amount of invested energy. Within quantum thermodynamics such limitations can be derived from first principles. In particular, it can be shown that establishing correlations between initially uncorrelated systems in a thermal background has an energetic cost. This cost, which depends on the system dimension and the details of the energy-level structure, can be bounded from below but whether these bounds are achievable is an open question. Here, we put forward a framework for studying the...

AdS/CFT correspondence via R-current correlation functions revisited

    , Article International Journal of Modern Physics A ; Volume 23, Issue 22 , 2008 , Pages 3721-3745 ; 0217751X (ISSN) Mamedov, S ; Parvizi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Motivated by realizing open/closed string duality in the work by Gopakumar [Phys. Rev. D 70, 025009 (2004)], we study two- and three-point correlation functions of R-current vector fields in script N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory. These correlation functions in free field limit can be derived from the worldline formalism and are written as heat kernel integrals in the position space. We show that reparametrizing these integrals converts them to the expected AdS supergravity results which are known in terms of bulk to boundary propagators. We expect that this reparametrization corresponds to transforming open string moduli parametrization to the closed string ones. © 2008 World Scientific...

Antiferromagnetic and spin-gap phases of the anisotropic Kondo necklace model

    , Article Physical Review B - Condensed Matter and Materials Physics ; Volume 74, Issue 2 , 2006 ; 10980121 (ISSN) Langari, A ; Thalmeier, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
We have studied the effect of anisotropies on the quantum phase transition of the Kondo necklace model in dimensions D=1, 2, and 3. Both the anisotropy δ of the intersite interaction term and anisotropy Δ of the on-site Kondo interaction have been included. We use a bond operator method with constraints implemented in mean-field approximation. Starting from the paramagnetic phase we determine the critical ratio (t J)c of the quantum critical point and associated scaling exponents of the Kondo-singlet gap. We show that in the case of easy-axis type anisotropy δ>1 a qualitatively different behavior in comparison to the conventional Kondo necklace model with (δ,Δ) = (0,1) appears. We have also...

    Temporal prefetching

    , Article Advances in Computers ; 2021 ; 00652458 (ISSN) Lotfi-Kamran, P ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Academic Press Inc  2021
    Abstract
Many applications, including big-data server applications, frequently encounter data misses. Consequently, they lose significant performance potential. Fortunately, data accesses of many of these applications follow temporal correlations, which means data accesses repeat over time. Temporal correlations occur because applications usually consist of loops, and hence, the sequence of instructions that constitute the body of a loop repeats many times, leading to data access repetition. Temporal data prefetchers take advantage of temporal correlation to predict and prefetch future memory accesses. In this chapter, we introduce the concept of temporal prefetching and present two instances of...

    Spatial prefetching

    , Article Advances in Computers ; 2021 ; 00652458 (ISSN) Lotfi Kamran, P ; Sarbazi Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Many applications extensively use data objects with a regular and fixed layout, which leads to the recurrence of access patterns over memory regions. Spatial data prefetching techniques exploit this phenomenon to prefetch future memory references and hide their long latency. Spatial prefetchers are particularly of interest because they usually only need a small storage budget. In this chapter, we introduce the concept of spatial prefetching and present two instances of spatial data prefetchers, SMS and VLDP. © 2021 Elsevier Inc

    Abstract
The associated production of a W and a Z boson is studied in final states with multiple leptons produced in proton-proton (pp) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using 137 fb−1 of data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. A measurement of the total inclusive production cross section yields σtot(pp → WZ) = 50.6 ± 0.8 (stat) ± 1.5 (syst) ± 1.1 (lumi) ± 0.5 (theo) pb. Measurements of the fiducial and differential cross sections for several key observables are also performed in all the final-state lepton flavour and charge compositions with a total of three charged leptons, which can be electrons or muons. All results are compared with theoretical predictions computed up to...
