3D Numerical Modeling of Dynamic Instability Induced by Liquefaction in Loose Sand Deposit when Earthquake Occurs Perpendicular to the Slope

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nazari Tileki, Ali (Author) ; Pak, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Soil liquefaction occurring in loose saturated sand deposits during seismic loadings is one of the most destructive earthquake-induced phenomena in the field of earthquake geotechnical engineering. Catastrophic destructions due to this phenomenon that have been observed in the earthquakes such as Kobe (1995), Chi-Chi (1999), etc. has led to extensive studies in this field. In case of soil slopes prone to liquefaction hazard, detailed analysis of this phenomenon requires considering soil-related factors (e.g. shear strength, relative density, permeability, slope geometry) on the one hand, and earthquake-related characteristics (e.g. amplitude, frequency, duration) on the other. Numerical...

Coupled Attitude-orbit Dynamics and Control of Solar Sail by Moving the Center of Mass

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Montazeri Hedesh, Hamidreza (Author) ; Asadian, Nima (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, firstly we have developed a coupled dynamic for the orbit and attitude of a solar sail. Secondly, we found an optimal trajectory from the Earth to Mars and tried to control the system on the optimal trajectory by a control mechanis which moves the center of mass of the sail. The solar sail is considered to be rigid and Ideally reflective which means the sail reflects the full extent of the photons it receives. Adjusting the center of mass of the sail is done by changing the position of two sliding masses rode on two rails perpendicular to each other. Moving the center of mass of the sail brings about a change in the attitude of the sail which then causes a deflection in the...

Robust roll autopilot design to reduce couplings of a tactical missile

    , Article Aerospace Science and Technology ; Volume 51 , 2016 , Pages 142-150 ; 12709638 (ISSN) Rezazadeh Mohammadi, M ; Fathi Jegarkandi, M ; Moarrefianpour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The purpose of this work is to decrease coupling effects of a tactical missile by designing a robust autopilot for its roll channel. In tactical STT missiles due to control strategy, in order to execute acceleration commands, roll angular velocity should be kept close to zero. Generally, in the design of autopilot for many of tactical missiles the inter influences of channels is neglected. However, three channels of the missile impact each other in different ways including kinematic, inertia and aerodynamic couplings. Aerodynamic coupling is a dominant in roll channel dynamics appearing as induced and control cross coupling roll moments. In this paper first the coupling terms are modeled...

    Abstract
We study a dynamic mechanism design problem for a network of interdependent strategic agents with coupled dynamics. In contrast to the existing results for static settings, we present a dynamic mechanism that is incentive compatible, individually rational, budget balanced, and social welfare maximizing. We utilize the correlation among agents’ states over time, and determine a set of inference signals for all agents that enable us to design a set of incentive payments that internalize the effect of each agent on the overall network dynamic status, and thus, align each agent’s objective with the social objective. © 2017, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and...

    Abstract
In this paper, the transient motion of a three unit intelligent Pipe Inspection Gauge (PIG) while moving across anomalies and bends inside gas/oil pipeline has been investigated. The pipeline fluid has been considered as isothermal and compressible. In addition, the pipeline itself has also been considered to be flexible. The fluid continuity and momentum equations along with the 3D multi body dynamic equations of motion of the pig comprise a system of coupled dynamic differential equations which have been solved numerically. Pig's position and velocity profiles as well as upstream and downstream fluid's pressure waves are presented as simulation results which provide a better understanding...

Magnon-polaron anomaly in nonlocal spin transport through antiferromagnetic insulators

    , Article Physical Review B ; Volume 104, Issue 1 , 2021 ; 24699950 (ISSN) Tabatabaei, S.M ; Duine, R. A ; Zare Rameshti, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We present a nonlocal spin transport theory for the coupled dynamics of magnetization and lattice vibrations in antiferromagnetic insulators. We find that magnon-polaron formation, i.e., coherently hybridized magnon and acoustic phonon modes, not only leads to anomalous features in the nonlocal spin current but also renormalizes the spin-flop transition field of the antiferromagnets. A length scale for the magnon-polaron formation below which the spin current is not affected by the lattice is also extracted from this nonlocal setup. © 2021 American Physical Society

All-optical controlled switching in centrally coupled circular array of nonlinear optical fibers

    Abstract
We show that, in a nonlinear centrally coupled circular array of evanescently coupled fibers, the coupling dynamics of a weak signal beam can be efficiently influenced by a high-power control beam that induces nonlinear defects. When the intense control beam is launched into the central core and one core in the periphery, then localized solitons are formed and cause the fibers with induced defects (defected fibers) to decouple from the other array elements. In the presence of a high-intensity control beam, the propagation of weak signal is restricted to the defected optical fibers. The weak signal periodically couples between the induced defects. This oscillatory behavior depends on the sign...

    2013
    Abstract
The dynamic response analysis of a delaminated composite beam with a general lay-up traversed under an arbitrary moving/non-moving force is presented. By employing the energy method and introducing a new finite element, the global mass and stiffness matrices for a Laminated Composite Beam (LCB) of Timoshenko type are derived in which the material couplings (bending-tension, bending-twist, and tension-twist couplings) with the Poisson's effect are considered. In deriving the governing equation the non-penetration condition is imposed by employing the method of Lagrange multipliers. Out of a self-developed finite element program, the natural frequencies and time response of such LCB are...

    Abstract
A rather new semi-analytical method towards investigating the free vibration analysis of generally laminated composite beam (LCB) with a delamination is presented. For the first time the combined effects of material couplings (bending-tension, bending-twist, and tension-twist couplings) with the effects of shear deformation, rotary inertia and Poisson's effect are taken into account. The semi-analytical solution for the natural frequencies and mode shapes are presented by incorporating the constraint conditions using the method of Lagrange multipliers. To verify the validity and the accuracy of the obtained results, they were compared with the results from other available references. Very...

    Abstract
Peripheral milling is extensively used in manufacturing industry. To achieve more material removal rate, high precision and surface quality and increase tool life, chatter vibration must be suppressed. In this paper, an extended dynamic model of the peripheral milling process including both the structural nonlinearity and nonlinear cutting forces is presented. Using the multiple-scale approach, as a perturbation technique, internal resonance of the milling process is investigated. Transfer of the energy between the coupled x-y modes is studied. According to results obtained, it is possible to adjust the rate at which the x-mode (or y-mode) decays by implementation of the internal resonance...

    Abstract
Abstract Lateral Spreading, which usually occurs as a consequence of liquefaction in gently sloped loose saturated sand layers, is known to be a major source of earthquake-induced damages to structures such as quay walls, bridge piers, pipelines, and highway/railways. Therefore evaluation of the liquefaction potential and using appropriate methods for prediction of the adverse consequences of lateral spreading is of great importance. In this study, numerical modeling has been used to study lateral spreading phenomenon behind rigid waterfront structures. Coupled dynamic field equations of the extended Biot's theory with u-P formulation are used for simulating the phenomenon. A fully coupled...

    Abstract
In this work, an optimum frequency is found for the operation of single cavity photonic switches. At this optimum point, the transmission contrast of ON and OFF states takes its highest value, while keeping the device power threshold relatively low and the device speed acceptably high. Then, the dynamic behavior of a typical single cavity all optical switch is investigated in the optimum operation point through temporal Coupled Mode Theory. Switching speed and power are discussed, and the device is shown to be applicable for telecommunication and data processing applications. The analysis is quite general, and can be used for resonant structures, such as photonic crystals and microring...

    Abstract
The lateral movement of a liquefiable soil layer on gentle slopes is the most visible and devastating type of liquefaction-induced ground failure. Recent earthquakes have shown that this phenomenon causes severe damages to coastal structures, pier of the bridges and life-lines by exerting large lateral forces on the structures. In this paper coupled dynamic field equations of extended Biot's theory with u-p formulation are used for simulating the phenomenon and the soil behavior is modeled by a critical state two-surface plasticity model for sands. Furthermore, in this study variation of permeability coefficient during liquefaction is taken into account. The permeability coefficient is...

    Abstract
In this paper, a tunable vibration absorber set (TVAs) is designed to suppress regenerative chatter in milling process (as a semi-active controller). An extended dynamic model of the peripheral milling with closed form expressions for the nonlinear cutting forces is presented. The extension part of the cutting tool is modeled as an Euler-Bernoulli beam with in plane lateral vibrations (x-y directions). Tunable vibration absorbers in x-y directions are composed of mass, spring and dashpot elements. In the presence of regenerative chatter, coupled dynamics of the system (including the beam and x-y absorbers) is described through nonlinear delay differential equations. Using an optimal...
