    Abstract
We study networks of facilities that must provide coverage under conditions of uncertainty with respect to travel times and customer demand. We model this uncertainty through a set of scenarios. Since opening new facilities and/or closing existing ones is often quite expensive, we focus on optimal re-configuration of the network, that is finding a facility set that achieves desired thresholds with respect to expected and minimal coverage, while retaining as many of the existing facilities as possible. We illustrate our model with an example of Toronto Fire Service. We demonstrate that relocating just a few facilities can have the same effect as opening a similar number of new ones. We...

The Q-coverage multiple allocation hub covering problem with mandatory dispersion

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 19, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 902-911 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Fazel Zarandi, M. H ; Davari, S ; Haddad Sisakht, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper addresses the multiple allocation hub set-covering problem considering backup coverage and mandatory dispersion of hubs. In the context of this paper, it has been assumed that a flow is covered if there are at least Q possible routes to satisfy its demand within a time bound. Moreover, there is a lower limit for the distance between hubs in order to provide a degree of dispersion in the solution. Mathematical formulation of this problem is given, which has O( n2) variables and constraints. Computational experiments carried out on the well-known CAB dataset give useful insights concerning model behavior and its sensitivity to parameters

The capacitated maximal covering location problem with heterogeneous facilities and vehicles and different setup costs: An effective heuristic approach

    , Article International Journal of Industrial Engineering Computations ; Volume 12, Issue 1 , 2020 , Pages 79-90 Hatami Gazani, M ; Akhavan Niaki, S. A ; Akhavan Niaki, S. T ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this research, a maximal covering location problem (MCLP) with real-world constraints such as multiple types of facilities and vehicles with different setup costs is taken into account. An original mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is constructed in order to find the optimal solution. Since the problem at hand is shown to be NP-hard, a constructive heuristic method and a meta-heuristic approach based on genetic algorithm (GA) are developed to solve the problem. To find the most effective solution technique, a set of problems of different sizes is randomly generated and solved by the proposed solution methods. Computational results demonstrate that the heuristic method is...

A novel decomposition approach to set covering problems by exploiting special structures

    , Article International Journal of Mathematics in Operational Research ; Volume 21, Issue 2 , 2022 , Pages 254-279 ; 17575850 (ISSN) Radman, M ; Eshghi, K ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The set covering problem (SCP) has quite a large coefficient matrix in practical problems, but due to its low density, most of its entries are zero. Drawing on this observation, some methods can be developed to exploit special structures of the coefficient matrix of an SCP in such a way that they contain smaller dense subproblems. Against this backdrop, in this paper, three structures, namely 'partitioned', 'semi-block angular', and 'block angular', are proposed. To begin with, some heuristic methods are presented to exploit these structures of the coefficient matrices of SCPs; then, by optimally solving the smaller subproblems of these structures, their solutions are used to solve the whole...

Developing a Model for the Maximal Covering Location Problem Considering Different Facilities, Set up Costs and Transportation Modes

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hatami Gazani, Masoud (Author) ; Akhavan Niaki, Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Facility location decisions are critical elements in strategic planning processes for a wide range of private and public firms. High costs associated with facility location and construction make facility location or relocation projects long-term investments. One of the most popular models among facility location models is the covering problem. This is due to its application in real life, especially for service and emergency facilities. Set covering problem (SCP) and the maximal covering location problem (MCLP) are two categories of the covering models. The presented model in this study is based on the maximal covering location problemwhile considering some real¬ life constraintssuch as...

    Abstract
Iran has a huge potential in field of tourism and marine passenger transport with possessing 5780 K.M water coast including the island and access to rivers and water basins.Strategic decision of passenger ports construction needs careful location selection andfinding correct trade of point between cost of construction and operation cost. However, according to forecasts increasing cruises demand, creating appropriate port infrastructure to supply thesedemands is a big challenge in next years. Ignoranceof it will prevent the countries development and its communication with other countries.Infrastructure development and creation ofmarine transport modern networks is a pivotal key to satisfy...

CFD simulation of natural draught cooling tower wind-covering

    , Article Applied Mechanics and Materials, Dubai ; Volume 307 , 2013 , Pages 279-284 ; 16609336 (ISSN) ; 9783037856598 (ISBN) Darbandi, M ; Salemkar, H ; Behrouzifar, A ; Abrar, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Past experiences have shown that a local wind can considerably affect the performances of powerplant cooling towers and factory chimneys. In thermal powerplants, the performance of Rankin cycles would reduce if the temperature of its condenser increases. This issue is very important to powerplants located in countries with strong local winds. To remedy the malperformance of a natural cooling tower in windy conditions, it is required to understand the physics of flow around cooling towers more clearly. One adverse physics is known as the wind covering problem which can drastically affect the natural draught through a cooling tower in windy conditions. In this paper, we focus on wind-covering...

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider two new variants of the unit covering problem in color-spanning set model: Given a set of n points in d-dimensional plane colored with m colors, the MinCSBC problem is to select m points of different colors minimizing the minimum number of unit balls needed to cover them. Similarly, the MaxCSBC problem is to choose one point of each color to maximize the minimum number of needed unit balls. We show that MinCSBC is NP-hard and hard to approximate within any constant factor even in one dimension. For d = 1, however, we propose an ln(m)-approximation algorithm and present a constant-factor approximation algorithm for fixed f, where f is the maximum frequency of the...

    Abstract
In the Partial Vertex Cover (PVC) problem, we are given an n-vertex graph G and a positive integer k, and the objective is to find a vertex subset S of size k maximizing the number of edges with at least one end-point in S. This problem is W[1]-hard on general graphs, but admits a parameterized subexponential time algorithm with running time 2O(k)nO(1) on planar and apex-minor free graphs [Fomin et al. (FSTTCS 2009, IPL 2011)], and a kO(k)nO(1) time algorithm on bounded degeneracy graphs [Amini et al. (FSTTCS 2009, JCSS 2011)]. Graphs of bounded degeneracy contain many sparse graph classes like planar graphs, H-minor free graphs, and bounded tree-width graphs (see Fig. 1). In this work, we...

Decomposition Approaches to Set Covering and Set Packing Problems through Exploiting Special Structures (Case Sturdy: Crew Pairing Problem)

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Radman, Maryam (Author) ; Eshghi, Kourosh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, a decomposition approach is developed to solve Set Covering Problems (SCPs) through exploiting special structures of their coefficient matrices. The coefficient matrix of an SCP is so large in practical problems, but due to its low density, most of its entries are zero. Based on this observation, some methods can be developed to aggregate the 1's of the coefficient matrix in order to create special structures involving smaller dense subproblems. In this theisis, four structures called "block-angular", "semi-block angular", "partitioned" and "nested block-angular" structures are proposed and examined. For this purpose, First, some heuristic methods based on constraint...

Fuzzy hierarchical queueing models for the location set covering problem in congested systems

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 15, Issue 3 , 2008 , Pages 378-388 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Shavandi, H ; Mahlooji, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In hierarchical service networks, facilities at different levels provide different types of service. For example, in health care systems, general centers provide low-level services, such as primary health care, while specialized hospitals provide high-level services. Because of the demand congestion at service networks, the location of servers and their allocation of demand nodes can have a strong impact on the length of the queue at each server, as well as on the response time to service calls. This study attempts to develop hierarchical location-allocation models for congested systems by employing a queueing theory in a fuzzy framework. The parameters of each model are approximately...
