    Abstract
Toughening of epoxy with different types of modifiers produces a bimodal blend that might show better fracture resistance in comparison with single-modified ones. In this research, bimodal epoxy formulations including mixtures of glass microsphere and silica nanoparticles are explored for possible synergistic toughening. The influence of composition on the glass transition temperature (Tg), tensile characteristics, and fracture toughness (KIC) is investigated. Interestingly, a synergism in fracture toughness is observed when mixtures of modifiers were incorporated. For the fixed overall modifier content, KIC is higher when the volume fraction of glass microsphere is lesser than the volume...

Mechanical properties of precast reinforced concrete slab tracks on non-ballasted foundations

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 19, Issue 1 , February , 2012 , Pages 20-26 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Madhkhan, M ; Entezam, M ; Torki, M. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This article deals with the mechanical properties of steel-reinforced concrete precast slab tracks on non-ballasted elasto-plastic foundations. To work out the spanning behavior of slab tracks, a FEM analysis was executed for discrete and continuous systems. At first, full-size slabs without foundation including solid and hollow-core specimens (with 30% weight reduction) were tested under centric static (monotonic) line loads, and loaddeflection curves were extracted. Then, FEM results for zero foundation stiffness were verified with those of experiments, which were in good agreement. Original results include the effects of several parameters on the cracking load, ultimate load, and energy...

    Abstract
This research studied the effect of adding TiO2 nanoparticles along with Al2O3 and Y2O3 additives on the physical and mechanical properties of a SiC-matrix composite. The samples were fabricated through a pressureless process at 1900 °C. The results showed that the addition of TiO2 nanoparticles up to 4.5 wt% inhibited the excessive growth of SiC grains. According to the investigations, the microstructure and final properties of composites were affected by density, synthesized phases as well as their distribution in the matrix, and grain size. The highest density, Young's modulus, hardness, indentation fracture resistance, and flexural strength, alongside with the lowest brittleness index...

    Abstract
Glass-ceramic composites in the SiO2-CaO-MgO-(Na2O) system, reinforced with 5, 10 and 20 wt.% aluminum titanate were synthesized by pressureless sintering. Optimum sintering temperatures with maximum relative density were determined for each composition. The composites were fired above the crystallization peak temperature of glass-ceramic. Mechanical properties of glass-ceramic and sintered composites, such as fracture toughness, flexural strength and Vickers microhardness, were investigated. The sintered composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the composite containing 10...
