Optimal Method in Cognitive Radio Networks Routing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kazemi, Mohsen (Author) ; Hemmat Yar, Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Cognitive radio (CR) technology is envisaged to solve the problems in wireless networks resulting from the limited available spectrum and the inefficiency in the spectrum usage by exploiting the existing wireless spectrum opportunistically. CR networks, however, impose unique challenges due to the high fluctuation in the available spectrum as well as diverse quality-of-service (QoS) requirements. Specifically, in cognitive radio ad hoc networks (CRAHNs), the distributed multi-hop architecture, the dynamic network topology, and the time and location varying spectrum availability are some of the key distinguishing factors. In this literature, we propose a new routing algorithm that tries to...

, Article AEU - International Journal of Electronics and Communications ; Volume 67, Issue 11, November 2013, Pages 955–966 Majd, A. (Sayyed Arash) ; Salehkalybar, S ; Pakravan, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we study the impact of sensing error and channel fading on the decision process of a multiple secondary user network in a primary network whose channel occupancy states are modelled as a Bernoulli process. We present a randomized access strategy to maximize total secondary network throughput. The proposed method guarantees that the probability of collision between primary and secondary users in each channel is less than the predefined value of Pc = ξ. To find the optimal access strategy, we formulate secondary network throughput as an optimization problem. Then, using the KKT method to find the solution, we break the original problem into multiple sub-problems. Then, we employ...

    Abstract
The focus of the paper is on cross-layer transmission based on rateless coding for relay networks. In the proposed method, rateless coding is used at the packet level and a separate physical layer coding is used at the physical layer. As rateless codes are originally designed and optimized for erasure channels, using these codes at the physical layer can lead to significant performance degradation. The proposed scheme has the advantage of a cross-layer design which uses a rateless code at the packet level modeled by an erasure channel. Based on the analysis and simulation results provided in this paper, the cross-layer scheme results in earlier successful decoding at the destination

    Abstract
In this paper, a cross-layer approach introducing new design parameters is developed for multi-rate wireless links. The novel design jointly exploits the finite-length queuing at the data link layer and the adaptation capability of the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme at the physical layer to optimize system performance for a wireless link. The analytical framework is based on discrete time Markov Chain. The performance metrics such as packet drop probability, channel packet error rate and packet loss rate are derived. Using these metrics, a constrained optimization problem is solved numerically to maximize the overall system throughput

    Abstract
Flooding algorithm is one of the most significant algorithms used in sensor networks. Although simple, this algorithm causes a large amount of energy and bandwidth to be wasted. The most important application of flooding is RREQ flooding in initial step of most routing algorithms. Although simple, this algorithm causes a large amount of energy and bandwidth to be wasted. Most previous efficient flooding algorithms use location information which is impossible for simple node in sensor network. Some others are not suitable for RREQ flooding due to eliminating redundant retransmissions. We present a modified flooding that simultaneously decreases energy consumption as well as network delay....

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shirvani Moghaddam, Mahyar (Author) ; Hossein Khalaj, Babak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Fountain codes enable wireless networks to adapt their transmission rates to the state of the channels, without the need for channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters. According to the following properties of rateless codes, ever increasing parity generation, mutual information receiver, single bit feedback, and information combining receiver, they are good choice for relay networks. In this research, the design of rateless codes for wireless relay networks has been studied. Cross layer issues should be seriously considered when using rateless codes in the packet level. One cross-layer scheme has been developed in this thesis and analysis show that the performance of the proposed...

A QoS-Aware Routing Algorithm in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network Using Cross-Layer Information

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sheikh Bagheri Arjmand, Mehdi (Author) ; Khansari, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we propose a QoS-aware routing algorithm for multimedia streaming that uses cross-layer information (application layer and physical layer) in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSN). Our goal is to use cross-layer information to route video packets efficiently and deliver a higher quality video in streaming applications. Our QoS-Aware Multi-Path Selection (QAMPS) method is based on multi-path multi-priority selection algorithm that uses Two-Phase geographic Greedy Forwarding (TPGF) as a routing algorithm. The proposed method guarantees QoS by splitting video streams into I-frames, P-frames and B-frames in the application layer and passes them to the network layer for...

    Abstract
Introducing a new paradigm, cognitive radio, for spectrum utilization of unlicensed users, new research on spectrum utilization of licensed users was planned. The results show inefficiency of spectrum usage, so cognitive radio network was introduced. Cognitive radio network should not have any affect on primary users activity, so these networks face with some chalenges and the important ones is the supporting of the QoS.
In this thesis after analyzing of the proposed routing metrics for finding best end-to-end path, the important ones of them were selected for more precise analyzing. After analyzing we find some disadvantage, can be improved by multi-radio. Although all of these metrics...

    Abstract
In this paper, we illustrate the design of a cross layered MAC and routing solution for supporting the fast propagation of broadcast messages at intersections in a Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET). One of the fundamental services in VANET is broadcasting, that is a challenging task due to different road topologies and network conditions. One of its challenges is broadcasting at intersections, because vehicles in different roads constituting an intersections can affect on broadcast process of other roads, message may not be propagated in some directions. In this paper we propose a cross layered method that by classifying vehicles based on their location and the road they move in, solves this...

IMAC: An Interference-aware duty-cycle MAC protocol for wireless sensor networks employing multipath routing

    , Article Proceedings - 2011 IFIP 9th International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous Computing, EUC 2011 ; 2011 , Pages 288-293 ; 9780769545523 (ISBN) Eskandari, L ; Yousefi, H ; Movaghar, A ; Khansari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The main source of energy consumption in the current MAC protocols for wireless sensor networks is idle listening. To mitigate this problem, duty cycling is used. However, it increases data delivery latency. In this paper, we propose an Interference-aware duty-cycle MAC (IMAC) protocol for wireless sensor networks that uses cross-layer information to reserve multiple paths for each source and send data packets along them efficiently. IMAC also handles the existing interference between these paths such that data packets can be delivered in the minimum required number of cycles. Simulation results in ns-2 show that the proposed algorithm has an average reduction of 49% in data delivery latency...

    Stochastic restricted broadcast process theory

, Article Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics) ; Volume 6977 LNCS , 2011 , Pages 72-86 ; 03029743 (ISSN) ; 9783642247484 (ISBN) Ghassemi, F ; Talebi, M ; Movaghar, A ; Fokkink, W ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We provide a framework for modeling and analyzing both qualitative and quantitative aspects of mobile ad hoc network (MANET) protocols above the data-link layer. We extend Restricted Broadcast Process Theory [11,9]: delay functions are assigned to actions, while the semantics captures the interplay of a MANET protocol with stochastic behavior of the data-link and physical layer, and the dynamic topology. A continuous-time Markov chain is derived from our semantic model by resolving non-determinism, using the notion of weak Markovian network bisimilarity. The framework is applied to a leader election algorithm

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a distributed rate and power allocation algorithm for real time traffic by using second order statistics of the channel. Our method minimizes the average delay of transmission over the fading channel. We assume that each sub carrier relies on its own buffer, and a constant arrival rate from higher layer application arrives at input buffers of each sub-carrier. This constant rate is optimally distributed through individual sub-rates transmitted over each sub-channel. Optimum power coefficients are also derived to minimize the average delay of transmission. In addition, collision and buffer overflows are taken into account while achieving acceptable throughputs

    Abstract
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have developed in recent years and are used in many different applications such as fire detection, military operations, and healthcare. Sensor nodes have the ability to sense an environment, sending and receiving information and forwarding packets from source nodes to a sink. These tasks consume large amounts of energy. In many WSN applications, delay and reliability of data delivery and the energy consumption of nodes are important design metrics. Network protocols such as medium access control (MAC) and routing should be designed to improve these metrics. In this article, we propose a new cross layer algorithm that improves the performance of WSN networks...

A distributed cross-layer optimization method for multicast in interference-limited multihop wireless networks

    , Article Eurasip Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking ; Volume 2008 , 2008 ; 16871472 (ISSN) Amerimehr, M. H ; Khalaj, B. H ; Crespo, P. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We consider joint optimization of data routing and resource allocation in multicast multihop wireless networks where interference between links is taken into account. The use of network coding in such scenarios leads to a nonconvex optimization problem. By applying the probability collectives (PCs) technique the original problem is turned into a new problem which is convex over probability distributions. The resulting problem is then further decomposed into a data routing subproblem at network layer and a power allocation subproblem at physical layer in order to achieve a cross-layer distributed solution for the whole range of SINR values. The proposed approach is also extended to minimum...

Distributed Cross-layer Optimization in Wireless Sensor Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirghasemi, Hamed (Author) ; Pakravan, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, our aim was to assess the resource allocation problem in wireless sensor netowroks and to optimize network utility and lifetime. To achieve these aims, it is nesseccary to solve resource allocation problem through optimization methods. Since the central methods need a central node to manage resource allocation, they can not be implemented in sensor networks because the nodes neighbors to this central node drain energy very quickly. Also, since central methods require transmission of all information about network topology to this central node, every change in network topology result in transmission of new network topology informations and therefore, overload for frequent...

Design and Analysis of a Novel Adaptive Cross-Layer Error Control for Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Naderi, Mohammad Yousof (Author) ; Rabiee, Hamid Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Wireless sensor network (WSN) multimedia applications impose new challenges in the design of algorithms and communication protocols for sensor networks. Indeed, wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) must provide relatively high throughput and low end-to-end delay and jitter while being energy-efficient. In view of these challenges, error control is an important mechanism which enables us to provide robust and high quality multimedia communication in WSNs. In this thesis, we first perform a comprehensive performance evaluation of different error control schemes for multimedia communication over WSNs. The results of our analysis show how wireless channel errors can affect the performance...

A Cross Layer Approach for Real-Time Communication in Wireless Sensor Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Eskandari, Leila (Author) ; Movaghar, Ali (Supervisor) ; Khansari, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Most of current the MAC protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) concern about energy efficiency rather than low latency. The main source of energy consumption in the MAC layer is idle listening, and most of these protocols use duty cycling for reducing energy consumption. But duty cycling method increases packet delivery latency. This problem is very critical in real time applications where packets should meet their deadline. There are some solutions for this problem. For example a node forwards data packets multi hop away instead of one hop in a single cycle. In this research, an efficient cross layer MAC protocol for real time applications is proposed. In this protocol multi hop...

    Abstract
Network coding as an efficient approach for performance improvement of communication networks has been introduced by Ahlswede et al. Despite simple forwarding schemes, in network coding scenarios, intermediate nodes forward the encoded version of their received packets. In wireless Networks, resource allocation includes routing, network coding, flow control, scheduling and power control. In this dissertation a joint scheduling, routing, flow control and Inter-session NC formulation based on a convex optimization problem is studied. Our formulation integrates the optimal scheduling, flow control and Inter-session network coding with a modified version of minimum delay routing. We propose a way...
