    Abstract
    Filtered mode shapes are used to detect the presence, location, size and shape of the delaminations in composite laminated plates with various boundary conditions. This method is the extension of a previous study by the authors on the delamination detection in the beams using irregularities of the mode shapes. The mode shapes are filtered to separate the smooth and irregular parts. Presence and situation of delamination affects these separated parts, and these effects are used to detect the delamination.     When cracks along rivet holes and other highly stressed regions of mostly aged aircrafts are found, usually repairs are being made to arrest these cracks.     Various damage indexes have been introduced in recent years incorporating different parameters for estimating structural damage. Amongst these indexes, Plastic Ductility and Drift have been the center of attention of standards and building codes, like FEMA-356, because of their straightforward physical interpretation and ease of calculation.     Abstract
    This study proposes a response-based parameter for strong motion duration which is computed for structures and is the total time they are nonlinear during an earthquake. Correlation between structural response and duration for structures, subjected to a set of spectrum matched ground motions, is employed to examine the efficiency of the proposed method. The spectral matching procedure ensures that the influence of amplitude and frequency content of motions on structural response variability is significantly removed.     In this paper, a sensitivity-based finite element (FE) model updating method using singular value decomposition (SVD) of frequency response function (FRF) is introduced. An exact sensitivity equation is proposed by incorporating measured responses of a damaged structure in the mathematical formulations. A set of incompletely measured natural frequencies of a damaged structure and mode shapes of the intact structure are used to deal with incomplete measurement without the implementation of FE model reduction or data expansion algorithms.     Abstract
    In this paper, a practical method is developed for performance-based design of RC structures subjected to seismic excitations. More efficient design is obtained by redistributing material from strong to weak parts of a structure until a state of uniform deformation or damage prevails. By applying the design algorithm on 5, 10 and 15-storey RC frames, the efficiency of the proposed method is initially demonstrated for specific synthetic and real seismic excitations. The results indicate that, for similar structural weight, designed structures experience up to 30% less global damage compared with code-based design frames.
