, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hamed Ranjkesh, Somayyeh (Author) ; Kianfar, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Measurement of efficiency is a significant issue in organizations which is used to improvement efficiency and performance .one of the serious offaires in any country, is banking, inefficiency in which leads to problems and obstacles in developing capital market. In this research, Data Envelopment Analysis models are used to estimate the extent of performance in decision making units (DMU’s) to improve inefficient ones. We change the inputs ( outputs) to a special unit at both the constancy or improvement of efficiency using the DEA models, we estimate the values of output ( input ) levels. Howeve, we assume the data of (the values of input ( output ) levels ) can be either crisp or interval....

A Review on DEA and Development of an Algorithm on Sensitivity Analysis and Stability Region

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nick Zinat Matin, Hossein (Author) ; Modarres Yazdi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Data envelopment Analysis is a non parametric technique which estimates the efficiency of a decision making unit in compare with others. In correspondent literature this unit’s Inputs and outputs are often assumed to be deterministic, but in recent years different approaches which viewing the data as non deterministic are presented. In this study we propose an algorithm for determining the stability region of a DMU while we assume other DMUs’ data are fixed. This algorithm is based on changing the reference set of the under investigation DMU. In fact applying these changes make the DMU move toward other DMUs’ efficient frontiers and by using this fact it is possible to determine the...

Goal Directed Programming for Determining Process Efficiency Using Data Envelopment Analysis

    , Article Journal of Mathematical Modelling and Algorithms in Operations Research ; 2013 , Pages 1-17 ; 22142487 (ISSN) Tavassoli, M ; Adldoost, H ; Saen, R. F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Netherlands  2013
    Abstract
There are numerous measurement methods for process performance control. One of which, widely used in quality control programs, is process capability (Cp) index. The advantage of this index is due to the high amount of information extracted from it. Since Cpis independent from a particular measurement unit it can be used to compare several quite different processes. While the relative efficiency of the process performance based on the Cpfor a period is satisfying, the process may lose efficiency in the next period for variety of reasons and could not keep up with the standard limits. The objective of this paper is to develop a new approach for measuring the relative efficiency of peer...

    Abstract
Over the past few decades, industrial development has caused a dramatic increment in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as a leading cause of climate change. Modifying the industrial plants' environmental performance is the main pillar of improving efficiency that can reduce the waste of resources and make achieving lower-cost global emission reduction targets of the Kyoto protocol's clean development mechanism (CDM) possible. Considering the essentiality of knowledge-based research in increasing the awareness of policymakers by providing better access to accurate and reliable information, an analytical survey on efficiency in oil, gas, and petrochemical industries has been conducted by...

    Abstract
Line balancing problem plays an important role in the decision making process to increase efficiency and productivity. Recently, U-shaped layout in many production lines has replaced the traditional straight line layout using just-in-time concept. Here, we propose a model, using multi-objective decision making approach to the U-shaped line balancing problem, to offer enhanced decision maker flexibility, by allowing for conflicting goals. The assembly line operation efficiency is the most significant aim in our study, and this efficiency relates to management of resources and the solution of line balancing problem. First, the U-shaped line balancing problem is solved considering the model's...

The relevant national road accident data were extracted from centralized data sources of international agencies. Due to data incompleteness and missing values, 21 Asia Pacific countries, presenting more than half of the world's population, were selected for detailed analysis. The study database consisted of 7 variables, covering years 1980 and 1995. The univariate and multivariate statistical analyses for the selected countries showed interesting results and relations for the selected variables. Accident rates, reflecting road accident risk and...

A new integrated AR-IDEA model to find the best DMU in the presence of both weight restrictions and imprecise data

    , Article Computers and Industrial Engineering ; Volume 125 , 2018 , Pages 357-363 ; 03608352 (ISSN) Ebrahimi, B ; Khalili, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2018
    Abstract
Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a mathematical programming approach to efficiency measurement in many applications. In some real-life applications, three situations are established. First, the input and output data are imprecise. Second, it is necessary to use the weight restrictions in order to consider the management view. Third, the decision maker needs to find the best decision making units (DMUs). In the traditional DEA model, it is supposed that the input and output data are precise and the weights are free. This paper proposes a new mixed integer assurance-region imprecise DEA (AR-IDEA) model to find the best DMU by solving only one model. Also, a new algorithm is developed to find...

Efficiency measurement in data envelopment analysis in the presence of ordinal and interval data

    Abstract
Several methods have been proposed in data envelopment analysis (DEA) for measuring efficiency in problems with interval or ordinal data. In this study, we review the weaknesses and drawbacks of these methods and show how converting ordinal or interval data into precise data can lead to violations of established DEA axioms. One of the axioms violated by these conversion processes is the inclusion of observations axiom, which requires a consistent definition of the production possibility set. We describe the special properties of ordinal and interval data together with their effect on the DEA-based rankings using a theorem and an example. We also propose a new algorithm and apply random...

Development of the group malmquist productivity index on non-discretionary factors

    , Article International Journal of Environmental Research ; Volume 3, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 109-116 ; 17356865 (ISSN) Abbaspour, M ; Hosseinzadeh Lofti, F ; Karbassi, A. R ; Roayaei, E ; Nikoomaram, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
Data envelopment analysis (DEA) measures the relative efficiency of a homogenous set of decision-making units (DMUs) when multiple inputs and outputs are present. The DEA-based Malmquist productivity index measuring the productivity change of DMUs over time has proven itself to be a valid tool to compare group performance. However, in the previous models developed for this purpose, it was supposed that all factors were controllable or discretionary. It is noteworthy that in most real cases, there are some inputs and outputs that are non-discretionary or semi-discretionary. Therefore, the main objective of the present study was to develop the DEA-based Malmquist productivity index on such...

    Abstract
Statistically constrained economic design for profiles usually refers to the selection of some parameters such as the sample size, sampling interval, smoothing constant, and control limit for minimizing the total implementation cost while the designed profiles demonstrate a proper statistical performance. In this paper, the Lorenzen-Vance function is first used to model the implementation costs. Then, this function is extended by the Taguchi loss function to involve intangible costs. Next, a multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) method is employed to optimize the extended model. The parameters of the MOPSO are tuned using response surface methodology (RSM). In addition, data...

Assessment of modal transportation sustainability: Application of data envelopment and concordance analyses

    , Article Iranian Journal of Science and Technology, Transaction B: Engineering ; Volume 31, Issue 2 , 2007 , Pages 179-193 ; 03601307 (ISSN) Rassafi, A. A ; Vaziri, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
This study tries to characterize national transportation modes to assess balancing and sustainability. Using a pioneer measure for sustainable development (SD), and based on the conformity of the growths of all sectors with transportation modes, the countries are comparatively studied. The proposed measure, elasticity, for each pair of variables indicates the extent to which the two variables have been changing consistently. Indeed the elasticity values are measures of "harmonic development" reflecting sustainability. The study database consisted of key aspects of transportation sustainability in the form of national variables including transportation, economic, social and environmental...

Application of data envelopment analysis in identifying milestones for passenger and freight transportation sustainability

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 12, Issue 4 , 2005 , Pages 426-436 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Rassafi, A. A ; Vaziri, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This study is an attempt to quantify the concept of sustainable transportation. The countries are comparatively studied using a pioneer measure for Sustainable Development (SD) and elasticity, that reflects the conformity and harmony of the growths of all sectors with passenger and freight transportation. Firstly, the elasticity of the non-transportation variables, with respect to passenger and freight transportation ones, were developed. Using individual elasticities, composite sustainability indices were suggested. Then, utilizing the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique, two composite indices, as well as the national variables, are employed to achieve a unique SD efficiency score....

An appropriate approach for evaluation and optimization of performance Gas Turbo-Compressor Stations

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Roudak, Leila (Author) ; Eshragh Niaye Jahromi, Abdolhamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Since early classical theories presented in management, consistently the evaluation of organization as one of the methods of control and planning has been considered. Besides due to intensification of competition among organizations, it is very important to consider performance evaluation as an effective tool in this regard. In this research DEA/AHP approach has been proposed for measuring performance organizations with fractal structure. Thus regardless of other units the first DEA model for evaluation of each pair of units is used and then a matrix of pairwise comparisons is made and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) model for two-level ranking is used. Finally the mentioned model for...

Power System Restoration Strategies Realizing the Switching Overvoltages

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Helmzadeh, Amin (Author) ; Vakilian, Mahdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Since the power systems usually are being operated close to their nominal capacity due to economical reasons, the probability of wide blackouts in power grids have been increased. However by employing suitable strategies the probability of huge blackouts is still very small but if they occur may put the power system operators in trouble while restoring the system. Thus many studies have been conducted in recent years dealing with power system restoration planning to achieve fast and reliable restoration plans. The scope of this project is overvoltage assessment during system restoration. In this manner we can find the optimal strategy with the least overvoltage problems to prevent the...

, Article CIE 2014 - 44th International Conference on Computers and Industrial Engineering and IMSS 2014 - 9th International Symposium on Intelligent Manufacturing and Service Systems, Joint International Symposium on "The Social Impacts of Developments in Information, Manufacturing and Service Systems" - Proceedings ; Volume 7, Issue 2 , February , 2014 , pp. 618-622 ; ISSN: 18624480 Zahedi Seresht, M ; Khosravi, Sh ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a method to measure the efficiency of a DMU (Decision Making Unit, e.g. school, public agencies and banks). One of the ways for determining rank of DMUs is efficient score of each DMU. An interesting research issues is to discriminate between efficient DMUs. In literatures, supper efficiency is an applicable method for ranking efficient DMUs. The main drawback of this method is an inability of this method to rank non-extreme efficient DMUs. Therefore, this issue reduces the usefulness of this method. In this paper we propose a new ranking system for non-extreme efficient DMUs (Decision Making Units) based upon the omission of DMUs from reference set of the...
