An extended finite element method for hydraulic fracture propagation in deformable porous media with the cohesive crack model

    , Article Finite Elements in Analysis and Design ; Volume 73 , 2013 , Pages 77-95 ; 0168874X (ISSN) Mohammadnejad, T ; Khoei, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a fully coupled numerical model is developed for the modeling of the hydraulic fracture propagation in porous media using the extended finite element method in conjunction with the cohesive crack model. The governing equations, which account for the coupling between various physical phenomena, are derived within the framework of the generalized Biot theory. The fluid flow within the fracture is modeled using the Darcy law, in which the fracture permeability is assumed according to the well-known cubic law. By taking the advantage of the cohesive crack model, the nonlinear fracture processes developing along the fracture process zone are simulated. The spatial discretization...

    Abstract
In this paper, a multiscale homogenization approach is developed for fully coupled saturated porous media to represent the idealized sugar cube model, which is generally employed in fractured porous media on the basis of dual porosity models. In this manner, an extended version of the Hill-Mandel theory that incorporates the microdynamic effects into the multiscale analysis is presented, and the concept of the deformable dual porosity model is demonstrated. Numerical simulations are performed employing the multiscale analysis and dual porosity model, and the results are compared with the direct numerical simulation through 2 numerical examples. Finally, a combined multiscale-dual porosity...

    Abstract
In this paper, a computational modeling tool is developed for fully coupled multiphase flow in deformable heterogeneous porous medium that consists of complex and non-uniform micro-structures using the dual continuum scales based on the computational homogenization approach. The first-order homogenization technique is employed to perform the multi-scale analysis. The governing equations of two-phase flow of immiscible fluids, including an equilibrium equation and two mass continuity equations, are considered based on the appropriate main variables. According to the well-known Hill–Mandel principle of macro-homogeneity, the proper energy types are defined instead of conventional stress power...

Three-Dimensional Numerical Modeling of Oil Reservoir Stimulation by Hydraulic Fracturing Technique Using EFG Mesh-less Method and Considering Two-Phase Fluid Flow

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Samimi, Soodeh (Author) ; Pak, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Hydraulic fracturing is a process during which a viscous fluid under relatively high pressure and flow rate is injected into a wellbore to induce and propagate a system of cracks in the ground.Hydraulic fracturing of underground formations has been widely used in different fields of
engineering, such as petroleum engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, mining engineering, and so on.Despite the technological advances in the techniques of in-situ hydraulic fracturing, the industry lacks a realistic and reliable numerical model to design cost - effective and efficient hydraulic fracturing treatment. This is due to the complex interaction and strong coupling between...

A numerical contact algorithm in saturated porous media with the extended finite element method

    , Article Computational Mechanics ; Vol. 54, issue. 5 , 2014 , pp. 1089-1110 ; ISSN: 01787675 Khoei, A. R ; Vahab, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a coupled hydro-mechanical formulation is developed for deformable porous media subjected to crack interfaces in the framework of extended finite element method. Governing equations of the porous medium consist of the momentum balance of the bulk together with the momentum balance and continuity equations of the fluid phase, known as [InlineEquation not available: see fulltext.] formulation. The discontinuity in fractured porous medium is modeled for both opening and closing modes that results in the fluid flow within the fracture, and/or contact behavior at the crack edges. The fluid flow through the fracture is assumed to be viscous and is modeled by employing the Darcy law...

    Abstract
In this paper a locally mass conservative finite volume method is employed to model the one-dimensional, two-phase immiscible flow in a poroelastic media. Since, an appropriate choice of primary variables is critical in simulating multiphase subsurface flow, depending on such a choice, the governing equations can be expressed in different forms. By implementing Picard iteration to a highly nonlinear system of equations, three numerical models including pressure form, mixed form and mixed form with a modified Picard linearization are developed in this study. These models have been evaluated in terms of stability, convergence and mass conservation in various one-dimensional test cases....

    Abstract
In this paper, a fully coupled numerical model is presented for the finite element analysis of the deforming porous medium interacting with the flow of two immiscible compressible wetting and non-wetting pore fluids. The governing equations involving coupled fluid flow and deformation processes in unsaturated soils are derived within the framework of the generalized Biot theory. The displacements of the solid phase, the pressure of the wetting phase and the capillary pressure are taken as the primary unknowns of the present formulation. The other variables are incorporated into the model using the experimentally determined functions that define the relationship between the hydraulic...
