    Stochastic modeling of degradation behavior of hydrogels

    Abstract
    We describe here a theoretical framework to model the bulk degradation of hydrogels, which are prepared by chemical cross-linking of pendant functional groups on long polymer chains. The random order of the cleavage of degradable bonds was described by stochastic Monte Carlo simulation. The events of bond cleavage were related to the macroscopic changes of hydrogel by the Bray-Merrill equation. Next, the time for the gel to disintegrate was predicted by considering the relation between the recursive nature in breaking the cross-link nodes and gel-to-sol transition.     Abstract
    Thermal degradation behavior of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) nanocomposites, with different nanotubes contents (0.5, 1.5 and 3.5 wt%) prepared via in-situ polymerization technique have been investigated using thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). TGA spectra revealed that these nanocomposites had enhanced thermal stability and no significant mass loss (<0.4 wt%) occurred up to 350°C.     Abstract
    This study proposes a new approach to incorporate motion duration in incremental dynamic assessments. In the proposed methodology, at each intensity level, a simulation-based approach which is verified with actual data is employed to determine the median duration and the median acceleration spectra of ground motions expected to occur at the site. Afterward, at each intensity level, artificial or spectrally matched motions are produced based on the median acceleration spectra and the median duration, indicating that different intensity levels are directly covered by the generated artificial or adjusted motions rather than just scaling up and down a set of recorded ground motions.     Abstract
    Coating is an effective approach to address the high corrosion rate of biodegradable Mg alloys, as their main challenge toward their extensive use. In this regard, it was tried to control the degradation process of an Mg-4Zn alloy by Ca addition, equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), and hydrothermal coating. The obtained results indicated that excellent grain refinement induced by Ca incorporation and ECAP simultaneously, improved both mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of the Mg-based substrate.
