    , Article International Journal of Thermal Sciences ; Volume 75 , 2014 , Pages 95-104 ; ISSN: 12900729 Habibi Khoshmehr, H ; Saboonchi, A ; Shafii, M. B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
It is well established that nanofluids increase or decrease heat transfer in boiling phenomenon. The study acquired Quenching curve and boiling curve in two different surface roughnesses in two fluids: deionized water and the nanofluid MWCNT-water with four different concentrations. The cylinder was made of silver and two surface roughnesses of 129 and 690 nm. It was heated up and soaked in the fluid mentioned above. Temperature was recorded by a drilled to install thermocouple. The experiment was replicated in five times. To calculate the heat transfer quotient, assuming the cylinder to be thermally homogeneous, the Lumped capacity method was applied. The obtained results during quenching...

Experimental investigation of the stability of the floating water bridge

    , Article Physical Review E - Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics ; Volume 88, Issue 3 , 2013 ; 15393755 (ISSN) Montazeri Namin, R ; Azizpour Lindi, S ; Amjadi, A ; Jafari, N ; Irajizad, P ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
When a high voltage is applied between two beakers filled with deionized water, a floating bridge of water is formed in between exceeding the length of 2 cm when the beakers are pulled apart. Currently two theories regarding the stability of the floating water bridge exist, one suggesting that the tension caused by electric field in the dielectric medium is holding the bridge and the other suggesting surface tension to be responsible for the vertical equilibrium. We construct experiments in which the electric field and the geometry of the bridge are measured and compared with predictions of theories of the floating water bridge stability. We use a numerical simulation for estimation of the...

Investigation of effects of salinity, temperature, pressure, and crude oil type on the dynamic interfacial tensions

    , Article Chemical Engineering Research and Design ; Volume 115 , 2016 , Pages 53-65 ; 02638762 (ISSN) Lashkarbolooki, M ; Riazi, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The main objectives of this study are to determine the influence of crude oil type, salinity, temperature and pressure on the dynamic interfacial tension (DIFT) of crude oil based on the experiments and modeling approaches. DIFT is also modeled using dynamic adsorption models, mono-exponential decay model as well as empirical equations. The results showed that when temperature increases, unlike deionized water which inversion phase temperature was observed, the equilibrium IFT of crude oils/sea water increases due to reduction of surface excess concentration of natural surfactants at the fluid/fluid interface as a dominant mechanism

Monodispersed polymeric nanoparticles fabrication by electrospray atomization

    , Article International Journal of Polymeric Materials and Polymeric Biomaterials ; Volume 61, Issue 8 , 2012 , Pages 611-626 ; 00914037 (ISSN) Zarrabi, A ; Vossoughi, M ; Alemzadeh, I ; Chitsazi, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
The feasibility of fabricating relatively monodispersed polymeric nanoparticles by the electrospray method in a modified electrospray set-up is demonstrated in this study. The polymer solution is electrosprayed in the single cone-jet regime through a nozzle. After solvent evaporation, during which particles pave from the nozzle to collector, the fabricated nanoparticles can be collected in deionized water, which plays the role of surfactant for particles, not allowing them to aggregate. The results of scanning electron microscope and dynamic light scattering analysis clearly confirm the fabrication of monodispersed spherical polymeric nanoparticles with diameter range from 80 to 120nm with...

    Abstract
In this research convective heat transfer coefficient enhancement of nanofluids prepared from high surface area graphene has been investigated in laminar flow in the developing region. The nanofluid has been prepared from nanoporous graphene with high surface area and with concentration of 0.025 to 0.1 wt.%. Deionized water has been used as the base fluid and a type of Ter-Polymer has been utilized as the surfactant. The results indicate that thermal conductivity of nanofluid with concentration of 0.1 wt.% remains quite constant, with only 3.8% enhancement, while convective heat transfer coefficient improves significantly, with 34% enhancement. The behavior of this enhancement related to the...

Mechanistic study on the dynamic interfacial tension of crude oil + water systems: Experimental and modeling approaches

    , Article Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry ; Volume 35 , 2016 , Pages 408-416 ; 1226086X (ISSN) Lashkarbolooki, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Riazi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This study investigates dynamic interfacial tension (DIFT) of acidic crude oil (ACO) and non acidic/basic crude oils (BCO) + deionized water (DW) as a function of pressure from 500 to 4000 psi, and temperature from 30 to 80 °C using an axisymmetric drop shape analysis (ADSA) technique. DIFTs are also modeled using dynamic adsorption model, mono-exponential decay model, and empirical equations. The results showed that if a reduction in the surface excess concentration due to increasing temperature overlooks the total entropy of the molecules in the system, an increase in IFT would be expected

    Abstract
Electrospray technique is one of the commonly used methods for generating nanoparticles. In this method, the chemical solution which consists of a polymer and its solvent are injected into an electric field via a nozzle. At the end of this nozzle, due to electric forces, a certain part of this liquid is separated. Then, the separated part is divided into smaller particles and the solvent is evaporated and hence, the nanoparticles are acquired. Produced nanoparticales are collected in deionized water placed under the certain distant from nozzle. However, construction of this method is generally based on practical results. In this paper, modeling and performance evaluation of high voltage...

    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2020
    Abstract
A multi-residue method using gas chromatography coupled with flame ionisation detector has been developed for simultaneous determination of 10 pesticides in milk. The methodology involved a sample clean-up procedure using ‘quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged and safe’ followed by a preconcentration step based on dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction. In this regard, acetonitrile was added to the milk sample with specific pH and ionic strength, and the mixture was rigorously shaken. The extracts were centrifuged; then, the organic phase (acetonitrile) was transferred to a test tube and was mixed with deionised water. The mixture was sonicated and chloroform was added as an acceptor phase...

    American Chemical Society  2020
    Abstract
This study aims to elucidate the impact of salinity on the interactions governing the adsorption of polar aromatic oil compounds onto calcite. To this end, molecular dynamics simulations were employed to assess adsorption of a model polar organic molecule (deprotonated benzoic acid, benzoate) on the calcite surface in NaCl brines of different concentration levels, namely, deionized water (DW), low-salinity water (LS, 5000 ppm), and sea water (SW; 45,000 ppm). Calcite was found to be completely covered by several well-ordered water layers. The top hydration layer is very compact and prevents direct adsorption of benzoates onto the substrate. Instead, Na+ ions form a distinct positively...

    Abstract
Energy-efficient mixing is vital for chemical and fuel processes. To this end, a flow-focusing configuration is proposed to investigate the effect of a uniform magnetic field on the mixing of a water-based ferrofluid with two streams of deionized water. An external and varying magnetic field is imposed on a straight microchannel, and the mixing between the ferrofluid and deionized waters is qualitatively and quantitatively measured. A commercial code based on the finite-element method is used, and the simulations are validated by two experimental studies in the literature. For a magnetic flux density of 10 mT, a signal frequency of 1 Hz, a duty cycle of 0.3, an inlet velocity of 500 µm/s,...

    , Article Ceramics International ; Vol. 40, issue. 6 , 2014 , pp. 8613-8619 Ashiri, R ; Nemati, A ; Sasani Ghamsari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this report, crack-free nanostructured barium titanate thin films are prepared by a sol-gel processing method. Glacial acetic acid, barium acetate, titanium tetraisopropyl alkoxide, 2-propanol and deionized water are used as precursors for preparing stable precursor solution. Then very thin films (thickness=26 nm) are deposited on fused silica substrates. In order to prepare crack-free thin films of BaTiO3, much attention is given to solvent evaporation process and a controlled pre-drying process is developed. It is found that the control of the process, especially in the initial stage of drying process is crucial and important for preparation of the crack-free ultrathin nanostructured...

Generation of various carbon nanostructures in water using IR/UV laser ablation

    , Article Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics ; Volume 46, Issue 16 , March , 2013 ; 00223727 (ISSN) Mortazavi, S. Z ; Parvin, P ; Reyhani, A ; Mirershadi, S ; Sadighi Bonabi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A wide variety of carbon nanostructures were generated by a Q-switched Nd : YAG laser (1064 nm) while mostly nanodiamonds were created by an ArF excimer laser (193 nm) in deionized water. They were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that the IR laser affected the morphology and structure of the nanostructures due to the higher inverse bremsstrahlung absorption rate within the plasma plume with respect to the UV laser. Moreover, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy was carried out so that the plasma created by the IR laser was more energetic than that generated by the UV laser

    Abstract
Pulsating Heat Pipes are an effective mean for heat removal with the potential for a widespread application in electronic packaging. An experimental study a Closed Loop Pulsating Heat Pipe (CLPHP) constructed of copper tubes formed into four meandering turns is presented. Once configured in a vertical orientation the lower portion of the CLPHP comes in contact with a heat source (called the evaporator) from which it will remove heat through the pulsating action of the two-phase mixture contained within the initially evacuated copper tubes eventually transfer the heat to a heat sink (known as the condenser). Heat fluxes can be measured using temperature data gathered from experiments....

On the formation of SWCNTs and MWCNTs by arc-discharge in aqueous solutions: The role of iron charge and counter ions

    , Article Fullerenes Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures ; Volume 19, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 317-328 ; 1536383X (ISSN) Gheytani, S ; Shervin, S. H ; Simchi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were synthesized in aqueous solutions containing FeCl2, FeCl3, FeSO4 and Fe2(SO4) 3. The effects of iron charge and the counter ions on the formation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis indicated that carbon multilayer structures including CNTs and multishell graphite particles were formed in deionized (DI) water without the iron precursor. SWCNTs were also synthesized in the presence of the iron ions. It was also found that the mole ratio of [Fe2+]/[Fe3+] in the solution has a significant influence on the purity of CNTs and the process yield. The highest yield was...

    Abstract
The formation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) during arc discharge in aqueous solutions of Fe2(SO4)3 and FeCl3 was studied. The concentration of iron ions changed from zero (deionized water) to 0.25 M and the cathodic products were examined by transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectrometry, and thermal gravimetric analysis. The experimental results showed that the crystallinity of MWCNTs is improved by increasing the concentration of iron ions. Nevertheless, the process yield and overall quality of the produced CNTs were significantly affected by iron concentration in the aqueous solution. This observation suggested that there should be an optimum iron concentration at which...
