    , Article Aerospace Science and Technology ; Volume 26, Issue 1 , 2013 , Pages 244-258 ; 12709638 (ISSN) Azizi Oroumieh, M. A ; Malaek, M. B. S ; Ashrafizaadeh, M ; Taheri, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this work we show how Artificial Intelligence (AI) could effectively be used to expedite the decision making process in the early stages of the aircraft design process. We employ both Fuzzy Logic (FL) and Neural Network (NN) as two different schemes of the AI. The developed tools are intended to help to select the proper combination of engine thrust, wing area and the aircraft weight without going through elaborate details of other direct approaches. We further show how the AI could be applied to the specific class of light business jets which serves to validate these schemes. The results indicate the effectiveness of the AI approach in the preliminary aircraft design process. The actual...

A new method for design cycle period management in aircraft design process

    , Article Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology ; Volume 80, Issue 5 , 5 September , 2008 , Pages 497-509 ; 00022667 (ISSN) Soltanmohammad, S ; Malaek, S. M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present research into reducing the aircraft design cycle period, by reducing the necessary number of design cycle iterations. The design cycle period is one of the main characteristics of the design process and design cycle iterations play a major role in the design cycle period. Design/methodology/approach - Toachieve the above-mentioned goal, the paper presents a mathematical model of iterations for the aircraft design process. This model describes the design coupled tasks as a discrete-linear time invariant dynamic system. This model also helps identify tasks which are the most important for generating iterations. This new method basically helps...

    Abstract
By increasing the complexity of system on a chip (SoC) formal equivalence checking has become more and more important and a major economical issue to detect design faults at early stages of the design cycle in order to reduce time-to-market as much as possible. However, lower level methods such as BDDs and SAT solvers suffer from memory and computational explosion problems to match sizes of industrial designs in formal equivalence verification. In this paper, we describe a hybrid bit- and word-level canonical representation called Linear Taylor Expansion Diagram (LTED) [1] which can be used to check the equivalence between two descriptions in different levels of abstractions. To prove the...

Application of ozone treatment and pinch technology in cooling water systems design for water and energy conservation

    , Article International Journal of Energy Research ; Volume 34, Issue 6 , 2010 , Pages 494-506 ; 0363907X (ISSN) Ataei, A ; Gharaie, M ; Parand, R ; Panjeshahi, E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Re-circulating cooling water systems offer the means to remove heat from a wide variety of industrial processes that generate excess heat. Such systems consist of a cooling tower and a heat-exchanger network that conventionally has a parallel configuration. However, reuse of water between different cooling duties allows cooling water networks to be designed in a series arrangement. This results in performance improvement and increased cooling tower capacity. In addition, by the integration of ozone treatment into the cooling tower, the cycle of concentration can be increased. The ozone treatment also dramatically reduces the blow-down that, in turn, is environmentally constructive. In this...

The ODYSSEY approach to early simulation-based equivalence checking at ESL level using automatically generated executable transaction-level model

    , Article Microprocessors and Microsystems ; Volume 32, Issue 7 , 2008 , Pages 364-374 ; 01419331 (ISSN) Goudarzi, M ; Hessabi, S ; MohammadZadeh, N ; Zainolabedini, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Design technology is expected to rise to electronic system-level (ESL). This necessitates new techniques and tools for synthesizing ESL designs and for verifying them before and after ESL synthesis. A promising verification strategy for future very complex designs is to initially verify the design at the highest level of abstraction, and then check the equivalence of the lower level automatically generated models against that initial golden model. We present one such approach to simulation-based functional verification implemented in our ESL design methodology called ODYSSEY. Our ESL synthesis tool generates a transaction-level model (TLM) at TLM level 2 (i.e., design with partial timing)...
