    Iteration Control in Design Process

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Soltan Mohammad, Bahram (Author) ; Malaek, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The main goal of this research is to reduce aircraft design cycle period, by reducing the necessary number of design cycle iterations. The Design cycle period is one of the main characteristics of the design process and design cycle iterations play a major role in the design cycle period. To achieve the above mentioned goal, we present a mathematical model of iterations for the aircraft design process. This model describes the design coupled tasks as a discrete-linear time invariant dynamic system. This model also helps identify tasks which are the most important for generating iterations. This new method basically helps break information cycles that create iterations among important tasks....

Application of Dynamic Sectorization in Air Traffic Controller Workload Balancing

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farsad, Mahsa (Author) ; Malaek, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In order to manage a complex system, one way is to divide it into smaller parts. That’s the reason airspace in each country should be divided into sectors. Currently, these sectors have fixed areas and each is controlled by a number of air traffic controllers. However, the traffic crossing these sectors is considerably dynamic, which means the traffic density and its distribution varies seasonally, weakly and even through the 24 hours of a day. Moreover, weather conditions and security and military issues make constraints to some of these sectors. This sometimes results in some high traffic sectors while some others have very low traffic density which causes two main problems. One is that,...

Sustainable Analysis of Unions Uses Axiomatic Design Theory with Focus on European Union

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Torbati, Mostafa (Author) ; Malaek, S. M (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this project, we examine the stability or sustainability issue in unions, in other words we want to know whether integration in European Union is stable? Countries have positive attitude toward unions and being member in unions is at special priorities. The main reason for countires is improve economy and national Security.
The main question in this research is modeling European Union with Axiomatic Design Theory and analysis of sustainability based on this theory. This study has attempted to push Axiomatic Design Theroy in the new field of Systems Engineering and also it gives a new and differnet approach to stability.

Flexibility Analysis in Supply Chain by Using Design Structure Matrix

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Yousefi, Zahra (Author) ; Malaek, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Supply chains are socio-technical engineering systems which now days perform in more uncertain operational environment than before. These systems have been vulnerable because of increasing the number of natural disasters, competitiveness and changing the demand. So these systems in order to be survived in such high uncertain environment need to enhance some capabilities in their structure. In this research by considering an assumed auto supply chain, we try to develop an approach to cover uncertainties in operational environment of this system. At the next step, we use design structure matrix modeling to model the interactions between system elements before and after scenario occurring....

Decision Matrix for Time-Critical Optimal Trajectories for Air-Launch of Small Satellites

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farzam Nik, Ehsan (Author) ; Malaek, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the satellite time-critical launch methods is air-launch, which is considered in this research thoroughly. The Large number of important parameters of this method makes the system highly complex. In such complex systems, usual methods of design and development will not be effective. Moreover, based on systemic approaches, interfaces between different elements of a complex system have significant effects on the performance of the whole system. One of the methods for analysis of such systems is “Design Structure Matrix” or DSM. This method is based on system engineering principles and has confirmed capabilities in analysis of highly coupled systems.
In this research, the air launch...

Decision Matrix for a Safe Aerial Launch Release Mechanism

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salmani, Hamed (Author) ; Malaek, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The case of rapid small satellite aerial launch by mother airplane has various applications; such as space experiment, weather monitoring, and getting information from the earth monitoring during natural disasters. In this method, the satellite and the launch vehicle will be carried up by mother airplane to the definite height; then, the launch vehicle will be released and flied - to the insert of satellite into the desired orbit. Aerial launch system success depends on a set of complex elements and their interactions. In the present study, first of all, the element interactions will be investigated by system engineering approach based on operational scenarios; then, a new approach for...

Application of Graph Theory and Matrices of Relations in Modeling Complex Systems

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saber Kivaj, Ali (Author) ; Malaek, Mohammad Bagher (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Design of complex systems requires different challenges to be met simultaneously. Yet the current methods lack a sound theoretic framework and thus designers normally rely on heuristic or empirical methods; based on available experiences. Such approaches to the system design entail both technical and business risks and subsequently increase the probability of long-term problems. In this research, along with the theoretical framework of the systems design concepts, we discuss number of important models. The main concentration of the work, however, is to; somehow, correlate Axiomatic Design Matrix (ADM) with Design Structure Matrix (DSM). Here we exploit mathematical model based on sets and by...

Developing a Decision Matrix of Extending the Range of a light Aircraft Using Conformal Fuel Tanks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hajizadeh, Amir (Author) ; Javadi, Khodayar (Supervisor) ; Malaek, Mohammad Bagher (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Aircraft Range extension is a very common modification for today’s aircraft. Using the conformal fuel tanks is an appropriate method for today’s military and civil aircraft. In this thesis, a Design method has been developed for designing these tanks using DSM, CFD and DOE. The main goal in developing the method was to be able to consider these tanks as an add-on feature for the aircraft, which can be designed after the aircraft production. The main aspects of designing the tanks was to identify the consequences of adding the tanks to the aircraft. Due to limited resources, only the Longitudinal static and dynamic stability of the aircraft has been considered. The method introduced here shows...

    Abstract
Now days supply chain systems operate in an operational environment with high uncertainty. Customer globalization, increase of natural and manmade disasters, outsourcing in far distances have increased uncertainty. Flexibility as a capability can help systems included supply chains respond to uncertainty and deliver value to their users. auto supply chain is the one that has suffered from these disasters. This paper encapsulates operational environment uncertainty through scenario development, then scores the scenarios based on some proxies. Design structure matrix is proposed to show the typical auto supply chain relationships before scenario occurring consequences and after that. in the...
