Temperature and composition effect on CO2 miscibility by interfacial tension measurement

    , Article Journal of Chemical and Engineering Data ; Volume 58, Issue 5 , March , 2013 , Pages 1168-1175 ; 00219568 (ISSN) Zolghadr, A ; Escrochi, M ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Crude oil reservoirs have different temperatures, compositions, and pressures, therefore oil recovery performance by CO2 injection varies from one case to another. Furthermore, it is predicted that lower interfacial tension between injected CO2 and reservoir fluid results in more oil recovery. In this study, we investigate the effect of temperature on the equilibrium interfacial tension between CO2 and three different oil fluids at different pressures. Also minimum miscible pressure (MMP) is measured by the vanishing interfacial tension (VIT) technique to determine the temperature effect on the CO2 miscible gas injection. The results on different pure and mixtures of hydrocarbon fluids show...

    Abstract
Because of its unique properties, graphene has attracted the attentions of many academic research groups and recently, the industry. One of the promising applications of the graphene is in micro/nano-sensors, e.g. using it as a pressure sensor. To use it in mechanical-based nano-sensors, it is very important to investigate the mechanical behavior of the nano-sized graphene sheet and its sensitivity to the medium changes applied on its faces. In this work, we use the molecular dynamics MD method and simulate the behavior of graphene sheet under differential water pressure influences. In this regard, a square straight monolayer graphene sheet is placed as a separator diaphragm between two...

Also, comprehensive parametric studies are done to reveal the effects of physical parameters on the performance and characteristics of this device in different operating conditions. In this study, the Knudsen number is varied from 0.1 to 4.5 to investigate all characteristics of the thermal-driven force inside the MEMS sensor. In order to simulate a rarefied gas inside...

Effect of resins on asphaltene deposition and the changes of surface properties at different pressures: A microstructure study

    , Article Energy and Fuels ; Vol. 28, issue. 4 , April , 2014 , pp. 2415-2421 ; ISSN: 08870624 Soorghali, F ; Zolghadr, A ; Ayatollahi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Asphaltene deposition has hindered oil production from asphaltenic oil reservoirs through deposition in reservoir rock and surface facilities. This paper investigates the effect of resin on asphaltene deposition at different pressures. To investigate the asphaltene deposition in the presence of resins at reservoir temperature and different pressures, a pressure, volume, and temperature (PVT) visual cell was designed. A high-resolution microscope and image processing software were used to detect and determine the amount of deposited asphaltene as well as its size distribution at different conditions. Two types of Iranian crude oils with different potential of deposition (low and high) were...

    , Article Acta Metallurgica Sinica (English Letters) ; Vol. 27, issue. 2 , Apr , 2014 , p. 324-330 Yasrebi, N ; Bagheri, B ; Yazdanfar, P ; Rashidian, B ; Sasanpour, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films have been deposited using RF sputtering technique at different pressures, RF powers, and substrate temperatures. Variations in surface morphology, optical properties, and film resistances were measured and analyzed. It is shown that a very low value of sheet resistance (1.96 ω/sq.) can be achieved with suitable arrangement of the deposition experiments. First, at constant RF power, deposition at different pressure values is done, and the condition for achieving minimum sheet resistance (26.43 ω/sq.) is found. In the next step, different values of RF powers are tried, while keeping the pressure fixed on the previously found minimum point (1-2 Pa). Finally,...

Mixing enhancement of two gases in a microchannel using DSMC

    , Article Applied Mechanics and Materials, Dubai ; Volume 307 , 2013 , Pages 166-169 ; 16609336 (ISSN) ; 9783037856598 (ISBN) Darbandi, M ; Lakzian, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
In high Knudsen number flow regimes microgas flow analysis may not be performed accurately using the classical CFD methods. Alternatively, the gas flow through micro-geometries can be investigated reliably using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. Our concern in this paper is to use DSMC to study the mixing of two gases in entering simultaneously into a microchannel. The mixing process is assumed to be complete when the mass composition of each species deviates by no more than ±1% from its equilibrium composition. To enhance the mixing process, we focus on the effects of inlet-outlet pressure difference and the pressure ratios of the two incoming CO and N2 streams on the mixing...

    Abstract
Asphaltene deposition during oil production and transportation causes extensive damage to reservoirs and wellhead equipment. In this study, the effects of native and non-native resins as well as those of their mixtures on the asphaltene deposition process are investigated. A novel pressure, volume, and temperature (PVT) visual cell is used to check the effect of resin on asphaltene deposition at different pressures and reservoir temperatures. Two Iranian crude oil samples with different potentials of asphaltene deposition (low and high) were used in these tests. During depressurizing in the presence of native and non-native resins, the amount of asphaltene deposited was measured. To monitor...

    Abstract
In this work the enhancement of gas to hydrate conversion employing the nanographene oxide (NGO)-based nanofluid regarding CO2 capture and sequestration recovery is investigated. A new series of experiments are carried out at different pressures, temperatures, agitation intensities and NGO promoter concentrations by using a newly developed fully automated GTH (gas to hydrate) energy converter. According to the presented results at the 3 MPa and 275.15 K and in the presence of 30 ppm NGO, it is possible to reach a CO2 gas to hydrate conversion of 95% at a low impeller speed in less than 2.5 h, which is quite interesting from an energy consumption standpoint. The presented approach can have...

    Abstract
In this study, multi-component CFD and DSMC solvers are used to study the gas mixture flow through a separation micronozzle at different pressure ratios. The resulting velocity and mole fraction fields, which are predicted by these solvers, are compared with each other to examine the effects of flow rarefaction on the mixture flow and the species separation and to evaluate the validity of continuum flow theory provided by the CFD solver. The results indicate good agreement of the velocity and mole fraction fields in the regions in which the pressure is sufficiently high. A decrease in pressure value, which is the result of increasing the pressure ratio at a constant inlet pressure, and a...

Mechanistic study to investigate the effects of different gas injection scenarios on the rate of asphaltene deposition: An experimental approach

    , Article Fuel ; Volume 262 , 2020 Dashti, H ; Zanganeh, P ; Kord, S ; Ayatollahi, S ; Amiri, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Asphaltene deposition during enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes is one of the most problematic challenges in the petroleum industry, potentially resulting in flow blockage. Our understanding of the deposition mechanism with emphasis on the rate of the asphaltene deposition is still in its infancy and must be developed through a range of experiments and modelling studies. This study aims to investigate the rate of asphaltene deposition through a visual study under different gas injection scenarios. To visualise the asphaltene deposition, a high-pressure setup was designed and constructed, which enables us to record high-quality images of the deposition process over time. Present research...

    Abstract
Zeolite SAPO-34 was used for fabrication of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) to improve the CO2/CH4/N2 gas separation performance of the neat Pebax1074 membrane. Permeability and selectivity of the MMMs were studied at different temperatures of 25-65°C and pressures of 4-24 bars. Also sorption of different gases in MMMs was measured at 35°C and different pressures, which showed enhanced solubility coefficients. Moreover, thermal, morphological and mechanical properties of MMMs were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and tensile analysis. The results showed excellent improvement in...

    Abstract
The effects of fluorine doping on the electronic structure of LaO1−xFxFeAs superconductor have been investigated by ab initio density functional theory using pseudopotential quantum espresso code. Firstly, we have studied the role of fluorine doping on the electronic structure of LaO1−xFxFeAs by calculation of band structure, density of states, and Fermi surfaces at various doping levels x = 0.00, 0.25, and 0.50. The lattice parameters and ionic position have been determined by optimizing crystal structure. Our results show that doping decreases cell volume similar to mechanical pressure and shifts the bands and states near the Fermi level toward the lower energies. According to the Fermi...
