Load commitment in a smart home

    , Article Applied Energy ; Volume 96 , 2012 , Pages 45-54 ; 03062619 (ISSN) Rastegar, M ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Although demand response (DR) potentially brings miscellaneous advantages, it is currently faced with challenges in its implementation due to customers' difficulty in manually responding to the time-varying prices. This paper presents an optimal and automatic residential load commitment (LC) framework to achieve the household minimum payment. Problem decision variables are the operating status of responsive appliances and charging/discharging cycles of battery storage and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Storage capability in residential centers provide the customers with this opportunity to not only supply the local demand during the high price hours but also sell the energy back...

Robust restoration of distribution systems considering DG units and direct load control programs

    , Article Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences ; Volume 26, Issue 5 , 2018 , Pages 2676-2687 ; 13000632 (ISSN) Asadi, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Turkiye Klinikleri Journal of Medical Sciences  2018
    Abstract
This paper presents a new method for restoration of distribution networks after a fault occurrence. This problem is solved from the viewpoint of the distribution system operator with the main goal of minimizing the operating cost during the fault clearance period. The effects of distributed generation (DG) units and direct load control (DLC) programs are considered in designing the proposed restoration procedure. Moreover, the uncertainties associated with the predicted loads of different nodes and the availability of DG are modeled here. Robust optimization is used to model the uncertainties of restoration problems and manage their associated risks. Finally, a robust reconfiguration plan is...

Improving direct load control implementation by an inititative load control method

    , Article EPDC 2013 - 18th Electric Power Distribution Network Conference ; 2013 ; ISBN: 9781480000000 Rastegar, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Moeini-Aghtaie, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Demand response (DR) as a state-of-the-art program is accommodated in the energy efficiency contexts of the smart grid. Lack of the customer knowledge about how to respond to the time-differentiated tariffs and offered controlling signals is the major obstacle in the way of broad DR implementing. As a solution, an optimization method, namely load control (LC), is proposed to automatically control the on/off status of the responsive appliances in a smart home. This paper focuses on the direct load control (DLC) program in the category of incentive-based DR programs. LC is extended to consider inconvenience cost of the DLC implementation for DLC program participants. Outputs of the extended LC...

A method to calculate the linear load pay back factors for air conditioners

    , Article Asia-Pacific Power and Energy Engineering Conference, APPEEC ; 2012 ; 21574839 (ISSN) ; 9781457705472 (ISBN) Ziaii, M ; Kazemi, A ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Parvania, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Load pay back effect is the excess of load as a result of load curtailment, observed in direct load control programs related to thermostatically controlled appliances. In this paper, according to a stochastic difference equation, the load profile of an aggregation of customers without control will be attained. Then the assumption to consider load pay back as linear will be examined through simulations. Afterwards, based on a data structure gained from performing load curtailments at each interval, least-square method will be used to fit load pay back factors for each interval. It is notable that there are some significant differences between the results attained in this paper and what was...
