Design and operation of a double-fiber displacement sensor
, Article Optics Communications ; Volume 281, Issue 4 , 2008 , Pages 614-620 ; 00304018 (ISSN) ; Azimi, P ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Design and operation of a double-fiber sensor for displacement measurements are reported in this study. In this arrangement, one fiber transmits the laser light to the target and the second one receives the light reflected off the target and transmits to a photodetector. Utilizing inexpensive plastic optical fibers offers advantages such as higher reflexability and more robustness at a reasonable cost, which are required for some applications. The novelties of the reported design are compactness of the fiber probe, flexibility, long dynamic range (22 mm), and it is possible to use the source and the detector at the same side. The displacement of the target causes the intensity modulation and...
An Automated Investigative System of a Plough Movement by Using a Developed Displacement Sensor
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Selk Ghafari, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
It is so essential to study a safe dynamics of agricultural mechanical equipment during duty stroke, plus getting a rich information about the nature of the soil under processing and in many cases there are associated simultaneous problems, so the main aim of this study is to create a safe working conditions for such specific equipment to extend their life time span as possible as it could. This study will predict an un-usual working circumstances for agricultural tools including plough of course depending on some automated technologies with fast response supported by smooth working conditions. Simply, the proposed Investigative system consists of a linear potentiometric element with...
Comparison of the Performance of Accelerometer and Non-Contact Displacement Sensor in Fault Detection of Ball Bearing
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Behzad, Mahdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
The use of multiple sensors that produce different physical parameters of the measured system for its health monitoring raises the reliability of the diagnosis. At the moment, the fault detection capacities of ball bearings by means of proximity probe are detected by exploiting the advantages and reducing its defects by appropriate signal processing of the raw data in the time domain. Also, the application of numerical derivation and integration to achieve to the desired frequency spectrum in defect detection is investigated. A set of experiments with different sizes of internal ring, outer ring and ball defects, four levels of speed and two load levels have been performed. Data acquisition...
Enhanced resolution fiber optic strain sensor based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer and displacement sensing principles
, Article ELECO 2009 - 6th International Conference on Electrical and Electronics Engineering, 5 November 2009 through 8 November 2009 ; 2009 , Pages II302-II306 ; 9789944898188 (ISBN) ; Nurmohammadi, T ; Ounie, S ; Sadighi Bonabi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this study, a novel scheme for fiber optic strain sensor has been introduced. This scheme is indeed a Mach-Zehnder interferometer followed by a displacement sensor. The strain is applied to an optical fiber which is the main branch of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer and causes an alteration in the interferometer's output intensity. The output beam is then spread on a mirror located in front of the fiber head. The head of the fiber and the mirror form a displacement sensor configuration. The portion of the reflected beam, gathered by the fiber, is a function of the distance between the fiber head and the mirror. So, applying strain causes a new change in the gathered intensity due to the...
Fibre position effects on the operation of opto-pair fibre displacement sensors
, Article Optics and Laser Technology ; Volume 43, Issue 4 , 2011 , Pages 814-819 ; 00303992 (ISSN) ; Golnabi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this article, two optical-fibre probes used in displacement measurements are reported. In one arrangement, two optical fibres with protective buffer jackets are placed together, while in the second arrangement, the protective buffer jackets are removed and the two fibres are placed with the claddings in contact, with a concomitant smaller centrecentre distance. As the core and cladding diameters are the same in both probes, the effect of the centrecentre distance on double-fibre designs can be investigated. The reflected output powers are recorded for the probes as a function of the axial distance from a reflective surface. A theoretical model is also implemented, which considers the...
