    Abstract
The sampling process in electrical devices includes non-linear distortion which needs to be compensated to boost up the system efficiency. In this paper, a blind method is suggested for non-linear distortion compensation. The core idea is to leverage the sparsity of the signal to cope with the ill-posedness of the distortion compensation task. The proposed scheme is an iterative method based on out of support energy minmization where the support information is not available. An adaptive thresholding operator is used to give a rough approximation of the support according to the estimated signal at each iteration. Various simulation scenarios have validated the capability of the suggested...

    Abstract
This paper investigates the performance of a MOS track-and-hold circuit as the front end of a wide input range and high-speed single-sided ADC. In order to reduce charge injection and clock feedthrough errors, a new technique for employing a dummy transistor in the bootstrapped switch of the track and hold circuit is introduced. Performance of the proposed circuit for the two cases of constant and non-linear hold capacitor is studied. It is also shown that how and when dummy switch and bulk switching method can improve the accuracy of theT/H. © IEICE 2007

    Abstract
We study learning algorithms when there is a mismatch between the distributions of the training and test datasets of a learning algorithm. The effect of this mismatch on the generalization error and model misspecification are quantified. Moreover, we provide a connection between the generalization error and the rate-distortion theory, which allows one to utilize bounds from the rate-distortion theory to derive new bounds on the generalization error and vice versa. In particular, the rate-distortion-based bound strictly improves over the earlier bound by Xu and Raginsky even when there is no mismatch. We also discuss how 'auxiliary loss functions' can be utilized to obtain upper bounds on the...

    Abstract
Superconducting devices are known to produce nonlinear effects. In planar structures, these nonlinearities depend on the current distribution on the strip, which definitely depends on the structure of device. This paper used a numerical method based on 3D-FEM to obtain the current distribution in the open-ends and gaps in the superconducting microstrip structures. This is used to present the nonlinear distributed circuit modeling of these discontinuities and its impact on the nonlinear phenomenon. This nonlinear circuit model is used in the Harmonic Balance (HB) method to analyze nonlinearity in the superconducting microwave devices. Therefore, this simple accurate enough nonlinear circuit...

Relaxed timing issue in global feedback paths of unity-STF SMASH sigma delta modulator architecture

    , Article ARPN Journal of Engineering and Applied Sciences ; Volume 12, Issue 17 , 2017 , Pages 4872-4876 ; 18196608 (ISSN) Taghizadeh, M ; Sadughi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This Paper presents a practical way to improve signal bandwidth and resolution in a Sturdy Multi-Stage Noise- Shaping (SMASH) sigma delta modulator. In this way, the processing timing issue in the critical paths of the proposed architecture has been relaxed due to the shifting delay of the modulator loop filter of each stage to the its feedback path. The proposed Unity-STF SMASH architecture, which is realized with several efficient techniques, would be robust to circuit non-idealities such as finite op-amp DC gain. Furthermore the topology can be implemented by a fewer active blocks, suitable it for low power, high operation speed applications. © 2006-2017 Asian Research Publishing Network...

The value of help bits in randomized and average-case complexity

    Abstract
“Help bits" are some limited trusted information about an instance or instances of a computational problem that may reduce the computational complexity of solving that instance or instances. In this paper, we study the value of help bits in the settings of randomized and average-case complexity. If k instances of a decision problem can be efficiently solved using ℓ< k help bits, then without access to help bits one can efficiently compute a k-bit vector that is not equal to the k-bit vector of solutions to the k instances. A decision problem with this property is called k-membership comparable. Amir, Beigel, and Gasarch (1990) show that for constant k, all k-membership comparable languages...

    Abstract
A DFT-Based method (DBM) has been proposed to compensate for the performance degradation caused by clipping distortion at the expense of bandwidth expansion. On the other hand, in any communication systems, conventional channel coding methods can be employed to improve performance. In this letter, the performance of the DBM and the channel coding methods (CCM) are compared. Furthermore, we introduce a hybrid system which outperforms both the DBM and the CCM

Sampling and distortion tradeoffs for bandlimited periodic signals

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Information Theory ; 2017 ; 00189448 (ISSN) Mohammadi, E ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the optimal sampling strategies (uniform or nonuniform) and distortion tradeoffs for Gaussian bandlimited periodic signals with additive white Gaussian noise are studied. Our emphasis is on characterizing the optimal sampling locations as well as the optimal pre-sampling filter to minimize the reconstruction distortion. We first show that to achieve the optimal distortion, no pre-sampling filter is necessary for any arbitrary sampling rate. Then, we provide a complete characterization of optimal distortion for low and high sampling rates (with respect to the signal bandwidth). We also provide bounds on the reconstruction distortion for rates in the intermediate region. It is...

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider a zero error coordination problem wherein the nodes of a network exchange messages to be able to perfectly coordinate their actions with the individual observations of each other. While previous works on coordination commonly assume an asymptotically vanishing error, we assume exact, zero error coordination. Furthermore, unlike previous works that employ the empirical or strong notions of coordination, we define and use a notion of set coordination. This notion of coordination bears similarities with the empirical notion of coordination. We observe that set coordination, in its special case of two nodes with a one-way communication link is equivalent with the Hide...

    Abstract
We study the problem of remote reconstruction of a continuous signal from its multiple corrupted versions. We are interested in the optimal number of samples and their locations for each corrupted signal to minimize the total reconstruction distortion of the remote signal. The correlation among the corrupted signals can be utilized to reduce the sampling rate. For a class of Gaussian signals, we show that in the low sampling rate region, it is optimal to use a certain nonuniform sampling scheme on all the signals. On the other hand, in the high sampling rate region, it is optimal to uniformly sample all the signals. We also show that both of these sampling strategies are optimal if we are...

    Abstract
In this work, we study the performance of polar codes for lossy compression of a Gaussian source with a side information at decoder; known as the quadratic-Gaussian Wyner-Ziv problem. First we extend the binary polar codes to q-ary for the Wyner-Ziv problem. We show that the nested q- Ary polar codes are optimal for this case. Then we present two polar coding schemes for the Gaussian Wyner-Ziv problem. In the first scheme, we achieve a rate above the Wyner-Ziv rate-distortion function with a gap of 0.5 bits compared with the optimal rate. This scheme utilizes a successive cancellation decoder and is optimal in weak side-information cases when the decoder side-information noise variance is...

    Abstract
Harmonic information is necessary tools in the estimation of motors life and performance. The conventional expression of harmonic amount is carried out by total Harmonic distortion. This distortion factor is only related to amplitude of harmonics while the motor loss is affected by frequency domain of them. In this paper a new definition of this factor has been presented. This definition includes the frequency of harmonics as well as their amplitudes. Experimental results verify the validity of this new definition

    Abstract
We have performed an analysis of harmonic contents of the optical output power for a diode laser and described the results in details. In the first step the absolute value of power for each harmonic is obtained in terms of various diode laser parameters, and the variations of external parameters such as modulation current, bias current and frequency are discussed. The analysis is done by direct solution of rate equations of an arbitrary diode laser for carrier and photon densities. We conclude that the maximum power occurs at isolated peaks and their loci have been investigated and shown to be predictable by theory. It is known that the optical power has a nonlinear dependence on frequency,...

    Abstract
In this study, a genetic algorithm optimization technique is applied, to minimize the total harmonic current distortion (THCD) in induction motors fed by high power inverters, based on an approximate model. That is, having defined a desired fundamental output voltage, optimal pulse patterns (switching angles) are determined to produce the fundamental output voltage while minimizing the THCD. The complete results for two cases of 3 and 5 switching instants in the first quarter period of PWM waveform are presented. In the sequel, considering that the torque pulsation is mainly affected by the presence of low-order harmonics, the fifth, seventh, 11th, and 13th order harmonics (in the case of 5...

    Abstract
In this paper the aim is to minimize the total harmonic distortion (THD) in PWM inverters while suppressing chosen harmonics concurrently and maintaining the fundamental component of the output voltage at a required level. This is reformed as an optimization task and the optimal pulse patterns are accomplished using genetic algorithm (GA) optimization technique to minimize a predefined fitness function. The complete solutions that suppress the 5 th and 7 th harmonics and optimize the THD are given. A practical limitation on the determination of sequential switching angles has been considered as a set of constraints in derivation of the results. © 2006 IEEE

A novel video watermarking method using visual cryptography

    Abstract
In this paper we propose a novel approach to insertion of watermark in the video sequences. The proposed scheme is based on visual cryptography and performs temporal scrambling for watermark embedding. Watermark, which may be a visible logo, is frequently split and inserted into video frames. Watermark detection can be verified by the human eye. Inserted watermark is expected to resist collusion attack, which is a major concern in video watermarking. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides a high resilience against some non-hostile video processing schemes, such as geometrical distortions. © 2006 IEEE

RISM: Single-Modal Image Registration via Rank-Induced Similarity Measure

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Image Processing ; Volume 24, Issue 12 , 2015 , Pages 5567-5580 ; 10577149 (ISSN) Ghaffari, A ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Similarity measure is an important block in image registration. Most traditional intensity-based similarity measures (e.g., sum-of-squared-difference, correlation coefficient, and mutual information) assume a stationary image and pixel-by-pixel independence. These similarity measures ignore the correlation between pixel intensities; hence, perfect image registration cannot be achieved, especially in the presence of spatially varying intensity distortions. Here, we assume that spatially varying intensity distortion (such as bias field) is a low-rank matrix. Based on this assumption, we formulate the image registration problem as a nonlinear and low-rank matrix decomposition (NLLRMD)....
