    , Article IEEE Communications Letters ; Volume 20, Issue 9 , 2016 , Pages 1784-1787 ; 10897798 (ISSN) Zamani, H ; Zayyani, H ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This letter proposes a dictionary learning algorithm for solving the grid mismatch problem in direction of arrival (DOA) estimation from both the array sensor data and from the sign of the array sensor data. Discretization of the grid in the sparsity-based DOA estimation algorithms is a problem, which leads to a bias error. To compensate this bias error, a dictionary learning technique is suggested, which is based on minimizing a suitable cost function. We also propose an algorithm for the estimation of DOA from the sign of the measurements. It extends the iterative method with adaptive thresholding algorithm to the 1-b compressed sensing framework. Simulation results show the effectiveness...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Emadi, Mohammad (Author) ; Haj Sadeghi, Khosrow (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Different beamforming methods are prevalent in wireless and mobile communication systems. However, a lot of practical issues, such as the quality of these methods in compact arrays and the huge computational burden are the major defects of the proposed methods. These problems restrict most of the algorithms to the theoretical domain and render them anappropriate for commercial applications. Therefore, the major focus of this thesis is on the practical issues in the implementation of the digital beam steering and direction of arrival estimation systems for linear, circular and random array configurations. To do so, compact arrays with super directivity are presented and considered. Different...

    Abstract
Sound source localization has been one of the fundamental problems in many areas, including radar, teleconferencing or videoconferencing, localization of earthquake epicenters and underground explosions, microphone arrays, robots, etc. All of sound source localization ideas are like human auditory system. The human auditory system is a complex and organic information processing system. It can feel the intensity and spatial orientation and other information of sound. The distance of the two ears on our head is about 20cm. When the sound reaches each ear, there are small time difference, intensity difference and phase difference. After analyzing these differences by the brain, the human can...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems ; Volume 49, Issue 3 , 2013 , Pages 1920-1931 ; 00189251 (ISSN) Emadi, M ; Sadeghi, K. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
For direction of arrival (DOA) estimation in compact arrays, a new approach based on time delay and amplitude estimation is presented for a known signal. The DOA can be accurately estimated without any calibration sources since the mutual coupling and multipath effects can be eliminated by the inherent mechanism of the proposed algorithm. The algorithm has significantly lower error and much less computational burden compared with the previous methods in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Delbari, Mohamad Reza (Author) ; Marvasti, Farrokh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Direction of arrival (DOA) estimation has various applications in different areas such as wireless communication and signal processing in medical applications. Most of the previous methods were not based on digitalization, but the advantages of digitalized methods have been proved in recent decades. Furthermore, because of existing the phase error, we need to use the algorithms to find the solution with amplitude measurements. A solution method to this problem was introduced in 2015 for the first time, and then newer algorithms were proposed. However, most of them need reference signals to resolve the inherent ambiguity of the problem. By contrast, this dissertation not only does not use...

Design of Digital Block of Receiver Section of Smart Antenna System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Naderi Shahi, Sina (Author) ; Haj Sadeghi, Khosro (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In recent years with the increase of cellular phone subscribers, demand for high capacity networks is inevitable. For this reason, different methods have been proposed to increase the channel capacity. One method which has become popular in recent years is utilizing of Smart Antenna Systems. Smart antennas basically attempt to enhance the desired signal power and suppress the interferers by beamforming toward the DOA (direction-of-arrival) of the desired signal and nullsteering in the interferences’ DOAs. Smart Antennas first find the direction of signal sources, and then put the main gain toward the desired signal and put the nulls toward unwanted signals. As a result, we can obtain the...

That is why the smart antennas have become very popular in communication systems. Smart antennas are a kind of adaptive antenna arrays with smart signal processing algorithms used to find direction of arrival(DOA) of the signal, and use it to calculate suitable weights to direct the antenna beam on the desired user and nulling interferences. In this thesis, DOA estimation...

Online Compensation of Unknown Mutual Coupling Effect in 2-Dimensional Arrival Angle Estimation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bahrololoom, Ebrahim (Author) ; Nayebi, Mohammad Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the recent decades, the estimation of direction of arrival has been an active area and some high resolution direction finding methods like MUSIC and ESPIRIT have been developed. These methods suffer from factors like mutual coupling. Direction of arrival estimation in presence of mutual coupling is a widely studied problem. In order to resolve this problem, many array calibration algorithms have been developed. However it may be impossible or difficult to set some calibration source in some situation. In this work we show that the effect of mutual coupling can be dynamically compensated by the inherent mechanism. First we show that how mutual coupling can degrades the performance of...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zamani, Hojatollah (Author) ; Marvasti, Farrokh (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Direction Of Arrival (DOA) estimation or direction finding refers to determining the arrival angle of a planar wave impinging on the array of sensors or antennas. The DOA information can be used by the smart antenna system for beam-forming and reliable data transmission. The problem of DOA estimation in propagating plane waves played a fundamental role in many applications including acoustic, wireless communication systems, navigation, biomedical imaging, radar/sonar systems, seismic sensing, and wireless 911 emergency call locating. In the conventional DOA estimating systems, an array of elements (antennas or sensors) is used that are colocated in a uniform pattern called, Uniform Linear...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bokaei, Moahammad (Author) ; Behrouzi, Hamid (Supervisor) ; Amini, Arash (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, we deal with the problem of direction of arrival (DOA) using single-snapshot samples taken from multiple source signals by an array of sensors. The array we are looking for in this work is a uniform linear array. There are many ways to solve this problem, including MUSIC and Prony. But one of the few methods that are able to estimate correctly with single-snapshot samples with incomplete uniform linear arrays in compressed sensing base algorithms. In the first step, we can estimate the data of a incomplete uniform linear array by arranging them in the form of low-rank Hankel matrices and using leverage scores and minimizing the weight nuclear norm. If the weight matrices are...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Nikoomahasen Sarukolaee, Ahmad (Author) ; Behnia, Fereidoon (Supervisor) ; Babaiezadeh, Massoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Estimating direction of arrival (DOA) is one of the most important problems in array signal processing to solve which various methods have been proposed. The older methods for estimating signal DOA were divided into three main groups: beamforming, maximum likelihood-based and subspace-based methods. By applying sparse representation techniques to the DOA estimation problem, a new group of methods for solving this problem are introduced. In this thesis, two grid-based methods, which are tow sub groups of sparse methods for estimation of DOA, are proposed. Each of these methods uses singular value decomposition to reduce the power of noise. Also proposed methods are compared with the multiple...

    Invariancy of sparse recovery algorithms

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Information Theory ; Volume 63, Issue 6 , 2017 , Pages 3333-3347 ; 00189448 (ISSN) Kharratzadeh, M ; Sharifnassab, A ; Babaie Zadeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2017
    Abstract
In this paper, a property for sparse recovery algorithms, called invariancy, is introduced. The significance of invariancy is that the performance of the algorithms with this property is less affected when the sensing (i.e., the dictionary) is ill-conditioned. This is because for this kind of algorithms, there exists implicitly an equivalent well-conditioned problem, which is being solved. Some examples of sparse recovery algorithms will also be considered and it will be shown that some of them, such as SL0, Basis Pursuit (using interior point LP solver), FOCUSS, and hard thresholding algorithms, are invariant, and some others, like Matching Pursuit and SPGL1, are not. Then, as an...

    , Article IEEE Signal Processing Letters ; Volume 29 , 2022 , Pages 892-896 ; 10709908 (ISSN) Delbari, M ; Javaheri, A ; Zayyani, H ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this letter, the problem of non-coherent direction of arrival (DOA) estimation is investigated exploiting the sign of the measurements in order to resolve the inherent ambiguity of the problem. Although the phase values are inaccurate, the sign of real and imaginary parts of the measurements will most likely remain correct under limited phase errors. Furthermore, a new approach for solving the problem is proposed employing a modified version of the Majorization-Minimization (MM) technique, without any prior information about the number of incident signals. Some theoretical analyses of our proposed algorithm are also provided in the paper. Finally, the simulation results are presented,...

In this thesis these algorithms are simulated and to each other. And it will be concluded that, in the application being test, the "MUSIC" algorithm is the best....

Evaluation and Improvement of DOA Estimation Methods in Dipole Antenna Arrays with Different Geometries

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sasannia, Zahra (Author) ; Farzaneh, Forouhar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, some of the well-known DOA algorithms namely Bartlett, Capon, Linear prediction, Maximum Entropy, Pisarenko harmonic decomposition, Minimum norm and MUSIC are analyzed and compared with each other in the identical situations using a uniform linear array. Then based on these comparisons, the appropriate algorithm is selected. In the next step since the linear arrays can't estimate both angles of arrival (Azimuth and Elevation) simultaneously, two dimensional (2D) geometries are introduced and are also compared to each other. Then one of them (circular array) is selected for dipole antenna arrays. The performance of the selected array is evaluated using isotropic elements for...

DOA Estimation in Communication Systems Using Deep Neural Networks

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alikhani, Morteza (Author) ; Behrouzi, Hamid (Supervisor) ; Karbasi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The purpose of Direction-of-arrival(DOA) estimation in MIMO communication networks is to find the direction of signals that are mixed together and mixed with noise by using an array of multiple receiving antennas. DOA estimation is an important issue in array signal processing. The traditional methods for DOA estimation try to solve this problem with mathematical algorithms. For example, some of these methods are based on parameter estimation; such as DOA estimation methods using maximum likelihood estimation methods. Some of other traditional methods are based on subspace decomposition; Like the famous MUSIC method. The traditional methods of DOA estimation usually have a drawback, and that...
