High-speed Flow Control Applying Local Heat Addition for Drag Reduction

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Haghighi Tajvar, Peyman (Author) ; Javadi, Khodayar (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, aerodynamic and aero thermodynamic effects associated with local heat addition into an inviscid steady state high speed flow are studied, numerically. This local heat, can be generated by a C.W laser, has a cylindrical shape and a Gaussian distribution in space. The loctation of the heat source, focal point of the laser, is considered to be upstream of the shock wave generated by a squared obstacle. The free stream Mach is 6 and the angle of attack is zero. Also, the center of this focal point is located on the symmetry line of the square. This kind of heat addition into high speed flow leads to wave drag reduction. Various parameters can affect this kind of flow control....

The application of the gradient-based adjoint multi-point optimization of single and double shock control bumps for transonic airfoils

    , Article Shock Waves ; 2015 ; 09381287 (ISSN) Mazaheri, K ; Nejati, A ; Chaharlang Kiani, K ; Taheri, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer New York LLC  2015
    Abstract
A shock control bump (SCB) is a flow control method which uses local small deformations in a flexible wing surface to considerably reduce the strength of shock waves and the resulting wave drag in transonic flows. Most of the reported research is devoted to optimization in a single flow condition. Here, we have used a multi-point adjoint optimization scheme to optimize shape and location of the SCB. Practically, this introduces transonic airfoils equipped with the SCB which are simultaneously optimized for different off-design transonic flight conditions. Here, we use this optimization algorithm to enhance and optimize the performance of SCBs in two benchmark airfoils, i.e., RAE-2822 and...

    , Article Journal of Applied Fluid Mechanics ; Volume 9, Issue 1 , 2016 , Pages 33-42 ; 17353572 (ISSN) Salimi, M. R ; Ramezanizadeh, M ; Taeibi Rahni, M ; Farhadi Azar, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Isfahan University of Technology  2016
    Abstract
Flow hydrodynamic effects and film cooling effectiveness of placing a coolant port (upstream jet) just upstream of the main cooling jet were numerically investigated. The upstream jet was added such that the total cooling cross section (cross sections of the main and upstream jets) remains constant, in comparison to the case of ordinary cooling jet. The finite volume method and the unsteady SIMPLE algorithm on a multi- block non-uniform staggered grid arrangement were applied. The large eddy simulation (LES) approach with the one equation subgrid scale model was used. The jet to cross flow velocity ratio (for both of the main and the upstream jets) is 0.5 and the cross flow Reynolds number...

Drag reduction of light UAV wing with deflectable surface in low Reynolds number flows

    , Article 3rd AIAA Flow Control Conference, San Francisco, CA, 5 June 2006 through 8 June 2006 ; Volume 3 , 2006 , Pages 1551-1558 ; 1563478137 (ISBN); 9781563478130 (ISBN) Darbandi, M ; Nazari, A ; Schneider, G. E ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The most effective approach to drag reduction is to concentrate on the components that make up the largest percentage of the overall drag. Small improvements on large quantities can become in fact remarkable aerodynamic improvements. Our experience shows that the use of light material in constructing human-powered airplanes and unmanned-air-vehicles UAVs has a few side effects on the aerodynamic characteristics of their wings. One important side effect is the unwanted deflection on wing shell. It is because of high flexibility and low solidity of the light material, which covers the wing skeleton. The created curvature has direct impact on the separation phenomenon occurred over the wing in...

Passenger Aircrafts Wing Sections Optimization Using Shock Control Bump

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Chaharlang Kiani, Kiarash (Author) ; Mazaheri, Karim (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The development of the boundary layer and shock boundary layer interaction essentialy determine the performance boundaries of transonic aircrafts. Employing shock and boundary layer control has therefore a large potential for improving flight performance. Aerodynamic surfaces of these aircrafts usually have very closed design points and critical points so small changes in angle of attack and free stream mach number cause entering drag divergence. Adaptive wings are the aerodynamic surfaces that use additional devices to control the flow pattern for improvment of aerodynamic performance in different flight conditions. Shock Control Bump is a control mechanism that is used for shock wave...

    Abstract
Superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted so mucha attenetions in recent years. High contact angle, Low adhesion and low friction drag are the most important features of these surfaces. Two main parameters of these surfaces are hydrophobicity and micro-( or nano) scale roughness. In this Project a 2-D simulation of flow on superhydrophobic surfaces have been considered. Shan-Chen multiphase Lattice Boltzmann Model has been used for the simulation and carnahan-starling equation of state have been used or a higher density ratio. In the first step flow in a channel with smooth walls with different hydrophobicity have been simulated and effects of hydrophobicity on pressure drop have been...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Allahyari, Mostafa (Author) ; Moosavi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This project studies the effects of different blade and different velocity fields on reducing drag coefficient. A numerical simulation was set up for a circular cylinder to represent the effects of blade on reducing drag. In this study, velocity, density and the cylinder diameter were constant and different viscosities were selected for different regime flows. The computational fluid dynamic programmer FLUENT was used to simulate results for this project. Arrays of cylinders were set up to see the changes in velocity profiles and drag coefficients for a range of Re. In this study, I studied three cases of setting up blade and concentrated on friction drag coefficient and pressure drag...

    Abstract
The increasing demand of energy and energy consumption, urged researchers of different fields of science to investigate different aspects of energy efficiency methods. One way of optimization of energy consumption is to reduce drag force in moving objects in fluids. Changing the geometry of objects, bubble injection, air suction and blowing on surface, using nano fluid and superhydrophobic surface are just a number of drag reduction methods. Among the mentioned methods, using superhydrophobic surface due to its simplicity, low cost and no need to change in geometry of vehicles attracted attentions of researchers of all over the world. These surfaces with micro/nano roughness combined with...

Simulation of Flow Drag Reduction through Air Injection from the Porous Wall

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Boyerahmadi, Amirhossein (Author) ; Moosavi, Ali (Supervisor) ; Sadrhosseini, Hani (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The effect of using backpressure of air injection in a microchannel on internal flow pressure drop were investigated in this study. Multiphase flows are commonly encountered in gas and oil industries. Flow fields in production operations are often complex and include multiphase flows of gas and liquid. Previously, because of their complex nature, these flow patterns have been mostly investigated only experimentally and empirical correlations based on the experimental data. From another point of view, it is almost impossible to experimentally realize all the flow conditions for each of the flow patterns. Nowadays computer facilities provide the tool to construct and use large-scale...

Re-Creation of Lost Gas Layer on Superhydrophobic Surfaces with Micro/Nanostructures

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jabari Farokhi, Salar (Author) ; Mosavi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Due to their unique characteristics, such as drag reduction, anti-fouling, and enhancing condensation, hydrophobic and superhydrophobic surfaces have attracted a lot of attention in the past decades. Since approximately 4% of the fossil fuel usage and 14-19% of the air pollution (including greenhouse gases, sulfur, and so forth) are attributed to naval activities, and the dominant form of drag on vessels is friction, drag reduction will not only reduce the cost and usage of fossil fuels, but it will also have numerous environmental benefits

    Abstract
Devising effective methods to reduce drag forces is of great interest as these methods could prevent the wastage of fuel and decrease carbon emission and the global warming rate. Since the invention of Liquid-Infused Surfaces (LISs) in 2011, numerous investigations have been conducted to study their capability in various applications. Due to recirculation or drawing of the penetrated liquid within the surface structure, these surfaces acquire a slippiness property. The conducted investigations showed that these slippery surfaces have great potential for reducing drag forces, whether in a laminar or turbulent flow. In the present work, we first briefly elucidate common drag reduction methods,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Valizadeh, Mahsa (Author) ; Moosavi, Ali (Supervisor) ; Khodaygan, Saeed ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
    Abstract
Considering the importance of environmental issues and the limitation of fuel supplies in the world, car issues have become one of the most important debates of the day. The methods used to reduce fuel consumption and emissions of greenhouse gases are primarily aimed at changing vehicle structure to reduce drag. An external body shape has been developed to reduce drag forces over the years. Due to the existence of limitations in the actual conditions of the theory, such as the beauty and convenience production, other methods should be examined. In this study, the structure of superhydrophobic properties materials with the emphasis on innovation has been considered. In order to investigate...
