    Dynamic compaction method in physical model tests

    Abstract
    In this paper, physical modeling tests are conducted to study some aspects of the dynamic compaction method. The loose models are prepared with dry sand. Four cylindrical tampers with different weight and cross section areas are used for compaction of the models and dropped from various heights. Strain gage type total stress measuring sensors are placed at different levels inside the model to measure the transferred vertical stresses due to collision of the tamper with the surface of the models.     Abstract
    In this paper the dynamic properties of Babolsar dry sand was investigated through one dimensional shaking table tests. 8 models of Babolsar loose dry sand under low confining pressures, were subjected to different harmonic and irregular dynamic loadings. The container was a laminar shear box having 24 layers each moving on the lower one. The dynamic properties including shear wave velocity, maximum shear modulus and damping ratio of the samples were addressed in this project. © 2006 Taylor & Francis Group, London

    Abstract
    WC-Co cemented carbides, including small angular tungsten carbides particles, are used extensively to improve wear resistance. Some additives can affect mechanical and wear properties of these materials. In this study, the effect of VC and (Ta, Nb)C content on wear of WC- 10Co were considered. The tests were performed at normal load of 230 N and sliding distance of 800 m up to 3200 m. Wear tests were carried out using dry sand/rubber wheel apparatus. Wear rate, standard and modified wear coefficients were calculated. The microstructures of prepared specimens were examined by optical microscopy.     Abstract
    A finite difference-based numerical model simulating the cone penetration process in unsaturated sands is presented. Mohr–Coulomb model (MCM) with simple modifications and Sun model (SM) were implemented to capture the unsaturated sand behaviour. It was shown that the cone tip resistance values resulting from the two models were fairly comparable. Predicted cone tip resistance values in dry, saturated and unsaturated sands using MCM were validated by the results of field and calibration chamber tests.     Abstract
    Surface waves generated during vibration of machine foundations are sometimes troublemaking and cause some damages to the nearby sensitive structures or people. Considering the function of the machines located on the foundations the dynamic loading could be harmonic or impact type. The main part of the generated energy is transferred to the ground by Rayleigh surface waves. One of the most reliable and economic methods for reduction of the effects of these generated waves is using open trenches around the dynamic sources, so called active isolation in literature.
