    Modeling Fracture Problems with X-FEM

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Broumand, Pooyan (Author) ; Khoei, Amir Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Every year, fracture imposes high economic costs and casualties to all societies. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, scientific approach to this issue has lead to invention of a new branch in mechanics, called fracture mechanics. In general, fracture problems fall into two categories. Brittle fracture, like what happens in glass, in which, few plastic deformations and energy absorption occurs and ductile fracture, which is preceded by large plastic deformations and energy absorption. This kind of fracture is usual in ductile metals like low carbon steel. Finite Element which is considered as the most important numerical method in the mechanics of materials, is also, widely used in...

The Effect of Reverse Loading on Ductile Fracture by Damage Plasticity

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Hamed (Author) ; Farrahi, Gholamhossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recent research studies on ductile fracture of metals have shown that the ductile fracture initiation is significantly affected by the stress state. In this study, the effects of the stress invariants as well as the effect of the reverse loading on ductile fracture are considered. To estimate the reduction of load carrying capacity and ductile fracture initiation, a scalar damage expression is proposed. This scalar damage is a function of the accumulated plastic strain, the first stress invariant and the Lode angle. To incorporate the effect of the reverse loading, the accumulated plastic strain is divided into the tension and compression components and each component has a different weight...

Impact of phase transformation on mechanical properties anisotropy of commercially pure titanium

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 37 , 2012 , Pages 223-227 ; 02641275 (ISSN) Nasiri Abarbekoh, H ; Ekrami, A ; Ziaei Moayyed, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Effects of microstructure and texture, before and after phase transformation, on the anisotropy of the mechanical properties and fracture behaviors of commercially pure titanium were studied. Before phase transformation, due to the split distribution of basal texture the activation of different deformation systems led to mechanical properties anisotropy. Although the fracture mechanism in both specimens was voids nucleation, growth and coalescence, the shape, size and distribution of dimples were affected by active deformation systems. However, after phase transformation, basal plains in most grains were aligned with the transverse direction. This texture component led to the activation and...

Mechanical and microstructural characterization of A1-5083/St-12 lap joints made by friction stir welding

    , Article Procedia Engineering, 5 June 2011 through 9 June 2011 ; Volume 10 , June , 2011 , Pages 3297-3303 ; 18777058 (ISSN) Movahedi, M ; Kokabi, A. H ; Seyed Reihani, S. M ; Najafi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Al-5083 and St-12 alloys sheets were friction stir lap welded at various travel and rotation speeds of the welding tool. Microscopic examinations indicate that the joint strength is due to the macroscopic and microscopic mechanical lockings and also atomic diffusion. The reaction zone of the welded joints consists of mixed layers of ultra-fine grains and the intermetallic compounds. The microhardness and nano indentation results prove that the intermetallic phase layer is more brittle in comparison to base metals and ultra-fine grain region. The fracture surfaces are a combination of brittle and ductile fractures. The fracture loads show that the joint strength improves significantly by...

Dynamic Modelling of Ductile Damage with Extended Finite Element Method

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Broumand, Pooyan (Author) ; Khoei, Amir Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, based on the combination of Extended Finite Element Method (X-FEM) and appropriate material constitutive models, an efficient method is proposed to model ductile fracture under quasi-static, cyclic and dynamic conditions. X-FEM is a novel method in which with the use of appropriate enrichment functions, discontinuity geometry is separated from the computational mesh and hence the need for a remeshing step is alleviated. The non-linear material behavior in the crack tip process zone can best be modeled with methods based on continuum damage mechanics. These methods model the ductile fracture mechanisms, phenomenologically. In this thesis, in order to model the ductile...

Study on Constraints of Design Codes for Ductile Behavior of Moment Frames with Reduced Beam Section Connections

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mehdizadeh, Araz (Author) ; Kazemi, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Reduced beam section connection was one of the connections that were introduced and prequalified by SAC project to replace pre-northridge connections. This connection reduces both flanges of the beam at appropriate distances from beam to column connection to make a fuse protecting welds from brittle fracture. The RBS is prequalified in limited span-to-depth ratio, for designing this connection for short and deep beams may effect its performance. Since these limitations are based on limited experiments, forty three numerical models were analysed to recheck them in this study. These models are verified based on two published experiments and are capable of predicting all known yield mechanisms...

    , Article Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance ; Volume 22, Issue 11 , 2013 , Pages 3414-3420 ; 10599495 (ISSN) Monazzah, A. H ; Bagheri, R ; Reihani, S. M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Researchers have examined different approaches to improve damage tolerance of discontinuously reinforced aluminum (DRA). In this study, three-layer DRA laminates containing two exterior layers of Al6061-15 vol.% SiCp and an interlayer of Al1050 were fabricated by hot roll bonding. Interfacial adhesion between the layers was controlled by means of rolling stain. The results of shear test revealed that, the bonding strength of laminates was influenced by number of rolling passes. Considering this effect, the role of interfacial bonding on the toughness of laminates was studied under three-point bending in the crack divider orientation. The quasi-static toughness of the laminates was greater...

    , Article Engineering Fracture Mechanics ; Volume 112-113 , 2013 , Pages 97-125 ; 00137944 (ISSN) Broumand, P ; Khoei, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
An enriched-FEM technique is presented for the crack growth simulation in large deformation ductile fracture problems using a non-local damage-plasticity model in the framework of eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM). The Lemaitre damage-plasticity model is used to capture the material degradation effect, in which the non-locality is enforced by solving a Helmholtz type equation in combination with the governing equation of the system based on an operator-split technique. A convergence study is performed to investigate the performance of X-FEM technique in plasticity problems. The accuracy and effectiveness of proposed X-FEM damage-plasticity model are verified through several numerical...

    , Article Materials Science and Engineering A ; Volume 548 , 2012 , Pages 99-105 ; 09215093 (ISSN) Eisaabadi Bozchaloei, G ; Varahram, N ; Davami, P ; Kim, S. K ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Oxide bifilms (double oxide films) are one of the most important defects that influence the mechanical properties of cast aluminum alloys. To investigate the formation of oxide bifilms, castings with different heights of runner were examined. SEM and EDX analysis were used to study the presence of oxide bifilms and fracture surface of tensile test samples. The fracture surface of the tensile test bars that were cast with lower height of runner revealed no oxide bifilm and features of ductile fracture mechanisms. On the other hand, the test bars that were cast with a higher height of runner showed a brittle fracture with areas covered by oxide bifilms. The results of tensile test were...

Application of the GTN model to predict the forming limit diagram of IF-Steel

    , Article Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology ; Volume 26, Issue 2 , February , 2012 , Pages 345-352 ; 1738494X (ISSN) Abbasi, M ; Shafaat, M. A ; Ketabchi, M ; Haghshenas, D. F ; Abbasi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Forming limit diagrams (FLDs) are extensively used in industries, particularly the auto industry. The establishment of these diagrams using a predictive approach can lead to reduction in both cost and time. In the present work, Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN), a porosity-based model, was used to predict the FLD of an interstitial-free steel via finite element simulation. Optimum values of the GTN model were obtained by applying a response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design. Results show that RSM is a good method for an appropriate determination of the GTN model parameters, such as initial void volume fraction, effective void volume fraction, critical void volume...

    Abstract
In this paper, the dynamic large deformation X-FEM method is presented for modeling the full process of dynamic ductile fracture based on a nonlocal damage visco-plasticity model. The effect of inertia is modeled using an explicit central difference scheme which is enhanced through the use of mass lumping, reduced integration with hourglass control, and numerical damping. The material nonlinearity and the flow stress dependency on strain rate, hardening and temperature are modeled with the Johnson-Cook visco-plastic model. The micro-void nucleation, growth and coalescence are modeled macroscopically with an isotropic damage model. The localization phenomenon due to the damage and thermal...

Effect of temperature on the fracture surface morphology of Ti- and Zr-based bulk metallic glasses: exploring correlation between morphology and plasticity

    , Article Journal of Materials Science ; Volume 53, Issue 14 , July , 2018 , Pages 10372-10382 ; 00222461 (ISSN) Asadi Khanouki, M. T ; Tavakoli, R ; Aashuri, H ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
According to previous studies on the fracture surface morphologies of bulk metallic glasses, the stable crack growth region width and vein pattern size increase with the plasticity at room temperature. In the present work, the fracture surface morphologies of Ti- and Zr-based bulk metallic glasses bent over a wide temperature range (0.1–0.8 glass transition temperature) are systematically analyzed. According to our finding, the stable crack growth region width increases while the vein pattern size decreases as the ductility improves by varying temperature. This observation is in contrast to the common thought that the ductility is proportional to the stable crack growth region width and vein...

    Abstract
In this research, the samples of a low carbon steel sheet were rolled up to a thickness prestrain of 67% at three different temperatures consisted of room, blue brittleness, and subzero temperature. Microhardness, SEM, and tensile tests were carried out to evaluate the static recrystallization kinetics defined by the Avrami equation, microstructural evolution, and mechanical properties. It was found that the Avrami exponent is altered with change in prestrain temperature and it achieves the value of 1 to 1. 5. Moreover, it was indicated that prestraining at subzero temperature followed by annealing at 600 °C leads to considerable enhancement in tensile properties and kinetics of static...

    Abstract
In this work, examinations on the microstructure and mechanical properties of plain carbon steel and AISI 430 ferritic stainless steel dissimilar welds are carried out. Welding is conducted in both autogenous and using ER309L austenitic filler rod conditions through gas tungsten arc welding process. The results indicate that fully-ferritic and duplex ferritic-martensitic microstructures are formed for autogenous and filler-added welds, respectively. Carbide precipitation and formation of martensite at ferrite grain boundaries (intergranular martensite) as well as grain growth occur in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of AISI 430 steel. It is found that weld heat input can strongly affect grain...
