A new genetic algorithm method for optimal coordination of overcurrent and earth fault relays in networks with different levels of voltages

    , Article 2009 IEEE Bucharest PowerTech: Innovative Ideas Toward the Electrical Grid of the Future, 28 June 2009 through 2 July 2009, Bucharest ; 2009 ; 9781424422357 (ISBN) Kamangar, S. S. H ; Abyaneh, H. A ; Chabanloo, R. M ; Razavi, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a new genetic algorithm (GA) method is presented to solve the optimization problem in coordination of overcurrent and earth fault relays. In addition to optimal coordination of overcurrent relays, earth fault relays are also coordinated by GA, considering critical fault condition for the relays located in two sides of network's transformers. The objective function is developed by adding new terms that are the constraints related to the coordination of overcurrent and earth fault relays in critical fault conditions considering different winding arrangements of transformers. The paper concluded by the results of a study carried out on a sample power network. The results...

Optimal distribution network automation considering earth fault events

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid ; Volume 6, Issue 2 , 2015 , Pages 1010-1018 ; 19493053 (ISSN) Siirto, O. K ; Safdarian, A ; Lehtonen, M ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the past decade, distribution network operators have been broadly engrossed toward automated distribution networks. The operators acknowledge network automation as an efficient investment toward a better service reliability. This paper aims to provide a new long-term cost/benefit analysis for an optimal level of distribution network automation. In the analysis, reduction in customer outage cost is considered as the benefit of implementing automation systems with capital investment, and annual operation and maintenance costs. In the Finnish regulation model, there is a special incentive based on customer outage cost reduction. As the main contribution of this paper, the impact of earth...

Design and Development of a Transformer Restricted Earth Fault Protection Immune to Current Transformer Saturation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Anani, Esmaeil (Author) ; Hajipour, Ehsan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the shortcomings of differential logic in power transformers is its inability to detect small percentage faults at the end of the winding. The occurrence of a phase-to-ground short circuit in the last few percent of the winding near the neutral causes a very large fault current to pass through the neutral and the faulted coils, while the changes in the current observed at the transformer terminal will be very small. To improve the performance of the power transformer protection system, a restricted earth fault (REF) protection is normally used in parallel with the differential protection. To implement REF protection, several solutions have been proposed in scientific and industrial...

    Abstract
This paper proposes a new method to detect and classify all kinds of faults, capacitor switching, and load switching in a power system network based on wavelet transform and support vector machines (SVMs). In this regard, a sample of a power system is simulated via MATLAB/Simulink, and by reading the voltage of the point of common coupling and using the wavelet transform, the differences of the outputs of the wavelet transform are investigated. The SVM approach is employed to distinguish the type of the transient (capacitor switching, fault, and/or load switching) in use for the high level outputs of the wavelet transform. Similar to neural networks, this method, which is based on learning,...
