    Abstract
In many earthquake prone regions in developing countries, substandard steel moment resisting frame (SMRF) systems pose a profound danger to people and economy in the case of a strong seismic event. Eccentric bracing systems with replaceable vertical links can be utilized as an efficient and practical seismic retrofitting technique to reduce future earthquake damages to such structures. This paper aims, for the first time, to demonstrate the efficiency of eccentric bracing systems with vertical links as a seismic retrofitting technique for the SMRF structures with WCSB and to develop fragility curves for such structures. To achieve this aim, first, the effect of the vertical links on the...

    , Article 10th East Asia-Pacific Conference on Structural Engineering and Construction, EASEC 2010, Bangkok, 3 August 2006 through 5 August 2006 ; Volume 2 , 2006 , Pages 149-154 Erfani, S ; Kazemi, M. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
A mixed shear-flexural beam element, which is called VM link element, is introduced. Dissimilar multi-surfaces in the shear-flexural space and non zero off diagonal components in flexibility matrixes are used for more realistic modeling of inelastic shear-flexural interaction. For preventing of intersecting among the yield surfaces, a new non-associated flow rule and a new kinematic hardening rule are developed. Capability of this element is examined for shear links used in eccentrically braced frames analysis for cyclic loading. It is shown that, the proposed link element is in a good agreement with the existing test results

Progressive Collapse Due to Sudden Column Removal in Steel Moment and Eccentric Braced Frames

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moosadoost, Ali Asghar (Author) ; Khaloo, Alireza (Supervisor) ; Kazemi, Mohammad Taghi (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
With increasing population and lack of habitable spaces, the building heights increased in cities around the world. Placing components of a structure in tandem may cause a permanent failure of the members due to strength reduction. During recent years, this kind of failure occurred in different places of the world, and is called progressive collapse. There are some various samples of the progressive collapse which all are good samples of failures such as building failure in Ronan Point in the UK, Twin Towers or the world trade center in NY, and Pentagon building. According to these issues, different institutions codified guidelines and codes in this field such as Department of Defense as DoD...

Investigating the Behavior of a Type of Energy Absorbing Bracing System

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Farahani, Hossein (Author) ; Khonsari, Vahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Bracing Systems are usually a set of inclined members that are embedded in structures to resist lateral forces and control lateral displacements. There are different types and behaviors for Bracing Systems depending on the way of assembling and locating them in the structure. Braced Frames, such as Concentrically Braced Frames (CBFs), generally have high stiffness and low ductility. Another Type of Braced Frames is Eccentrically Braced Frames (EBFs) which improves CBFs by establishing suitable ductility as well as stiffness. Inelastic behavior of Links involved with EBFs caused this in EBFs. Nevertheless, these systems have no efficiency in next earthquake, because links are parts of beams...

Investigation on Seismic Performance of Eccentrically Braced Frames with Vertical Post-tensioned Cables

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Goodarzi Soroush, Adel (Author) ; Kazemi, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Although the moment frame can show deformable behavior against seismic loads, but its flexibility and low stiffness, especially in tall structures, cause the governance criterion to be designed. The use of eccentrically braced frames was able to solve the displacement problem to some extent, because it has the characteristics of both flexural frame systems and conccentric bracing. Different methods have been proposed to eliminate residual displacements in this type of system, one of which is the use of post tensioned cables. The aim of this study was to investigate the seismic behavior of a steel structure with a eccentrically braced frame system with post tension cable. The cables are anchor...

Investigation of Seismic Performance of Self-Centering Eccentrically-braced frame Systems with Vertical Links

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Soleimani, Mona (Author) ; Rahimzadeh Rofooei, Fayaz (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Conventional eccentric braced frames often sustain large residual deformations and significant damages after strong earthquakes which may lead to heavy damages or even destruction of the structure. Here, a self-centering, Y-inverted, eccentrically braced frame (SC-YEBF) is proposed which combines the lateral load resisting benefits of YEBF including strength, stiffness and energy dissipation capacity with the re-centering capacity of post-tensioned (PT) high strength steel strands used at beam-to-column connections. A design procedure is presented assuming that all the seismic input energy is dissipated through inherent damping and plastic deformations of the link-beams. Thus, in the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Chalabi, Romina (Author) ; Mohtasham Dolatshahi, Kiarash (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study investigates the seismic behavior of eccentrically braced frames (EBFs) taking into account the influence of masonry infill walls. The primary objectives of the study are to predict the seismic global response and develop associated fragility curves using a nonmodel scenario-based machine learning framework. To model the infill walls, equivalent diagonal struts are employed, and a nonlinear pushover analysis is conducted to assess the overall impact of infills on 4- and 8-story EBF structures. An extensive database of 4 bare and 48 infilled EBFs with various infill properties is assembled to predict story-based engineering demand parameters (EDPs) containing peak and residual...

    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
Recent studies have indicated the need of considering aftershocks in the seismic design/assessment of structures. This article investigates the effect of sequential mainshock and aftershock earthquakes on eccentrically braced steel frames with vertical energy-absorbing links. To achieve this, 4, 8 and 12-storey frame buildings are modelled in Perform3D® software considering non-linear behaviour of materials and components. The frames are subjected to a set of 12 main earthquake records corresponding to the required hazard level, and then subsequent aftershocks are applied using incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). To reduce the computational cost, an alternative approach is also adopted by...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hooshmandi, Matin (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the present study it was intended to evaluate the seismic performance of multi-story EBF structures for designing. When adopting this method, parametric studies are carried out based on the nonlinear performance of such systems whiting the framework of nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. In lines with seismic strengthening of such structures, this study tries to reassess the performance of these systems through increasing ductility and replacing bracing frames with energy damper and special seismic systems. As a result, a fuse type performance is created to protect the other elements of the structure. This study describes the seismic strengthening of this type of dampers using simple...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Godazgar, Behfar (Author) ; Dolatshahi, Kiarash (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, seismic loss of eccentrically braced frame buildings is assessed by using reliability methods. For this end, first, Bayesian linear regression is utilized to characterize the epistemic uncertainty of the problem in the form of damage models. The input of these models are mechanical and physical properties of the components, and the outputs are damage ratios. In the second step, by using the developed models and the comprehensive library of probabilistic models of Rt, reliability analysis is conducted on 4, 8, and 16 stories building located in San Jose. The limit state function is seismic loss, including repair loss, collapse loss, and demolition loss, and analysis method...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tavakoli Targhi, Amir Ali (Author) ; Mofid, Masoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Seismic resistant structural systems or lateral load-bearing systems must enjoy adequate resistance and hardness against lateral forces and displacements in addition to resisting large deformations to absorb and dissipate energy. Since Iran is located in a seismic area and almost all metropolises of Iran are located in the vicinity of faults, it is critically important to pay close attention to development and application of efficient seismic systems in the constructional system of Iran. The HKB (Hat Knee Bracing) system is a lateral load-bearing system, the construction of which is inspired from divergent bracing systems. In other words, as in...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karami Seyedabadi, Reza (Author) ; Mohtasham Dolatshahi, Kiarash (Supervisor) ; Yazdanpanah, Omid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This paper aims at producing surrogate models which can predict building structural response under ground motion loads. Rapid response prediction has a great influence on post-event decision-making. The current study follows mentioned purpose in two main sections. The first section proposed deep models, able at estimating displacement time-series response by using only ground motion and roof acceleration. By this point, different preprocessing methods and their effects are studied. Also, a novel loss function is introduced and a hybrid model consists of different deep layers utilized to gain accurate models. These models train and evaluate on two case-study buildings; a special moment frame...

    Shear slotted bolted connection

    , Article Structural Design of Tall and Special Buildings ; Volume 26, Issue 3 , 2017 ; 15417794 (ISSN) Nikoukalam, M. T ; Mirghaderi, S. R ; Dolatshahi, K. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Slotted bolted connections (SBCs) have been developed and used as an axial friction damper in braced frames since 1980s. To employ the benefits of SBCs in moment resisting frames (MRFs), rotational slotted bolted connections have been developed more recently with limited application in members that flexural behavior is dominated to shear. In this paper, shear slotted bolted connection (SSBC) is introduced as a new type of friction dampers to employ the benefits of SBCs in lateral load resisting systems with predominant shear behavior members that dissipate energy by traditional yielding mechanisms. The SSBC is a modified bolted connection that dissipates energy through friction in which...

    Abstract
This paper introduces a new earthquake-resistant building design featuring eccentrically braced frames with steel wall shear panels. It also proposes closed-form expressions for analysis and extension of the existing failure mode control design method for the new structural system. Closed-form equations for internal forces were obtained, and probable failure mechanisms and corresponding lateral load multipliers for secondary effects were identified. Selection of member profiles was completed by the mechanism equilibrium curve concept. Pushover modelling was then performed with plastic hinge distribution corresponding to failure mechanisms. Only small differences were found between the...

    Abstract
In this paper, earthquake-induced economic loss of buildings with the eccentrically braced frame as the lateral load resisting system is investigated. Economic loss in this paper includes collapse loss, demolition loss, and structural and nonstructural repair loss. A simplified probabilistic story-based loss estimation procedure is employed for this purpose. A thorough study is conducted on the verification of shear link response with experimental results as shear link is the main source of nonlinearity in eccentrically braced frames. Nonlinear response history analyses are conducted on four, eight and sixteen story prototype models and engineering demand parameters such as story drift...
