A robust dual source level set method for three-dimensional echocardiography image segmentation
, Article Journal of Theoretical and Applied Information Technology ; Volume 95, Issue 21 , 2017 , Pages 5701-5710 ; 19928645 (ISSN) ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Behnam, H ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Echocardiography as a common place device has been widely used for diagnosis. Segmentation of left ventricle just using the standard level set formulation based on the magnitude of intensity cannot restrict the contour evolution completely due to the lack of sharp edges. This paper aims to introduce a robust method for segmentation of three-dimensional echocardiography images based on two boundary maps namely distance map and probabilistic map as stopping criteria of contour evolution which are extracted using two different approaches. The distance map is extracted by applying Free Form Deformation (FFD) method on manually determined landmarks of initial spherical volume to register the...

Abstract
Segmentation of the Left ventricle (LV) is a crucial step for quantitative measurements such as area, volume, and ejection fraction. However, the automatic LV segmentation in 2D echocardiographic images is a challenging task due to ill-defined borders, and operator dependence issues (insufficient reproducibility). U-net, which is a well-known architecture in medical image segmentation, addressed this problem through an encoder-decoder path. Despite outstanding overall performance, U-net ignores the contribution of all semantic strengths in the segmentation procedure. In the present study, we have proposed a novel architecture to tackle this drawback. Feature maps in all levels of the decoder...

Abstract
Landmark extraction is used as the first step of many vision tasks such as tracking, image registration, localization, image matching and recognition. Furthermore, landmarks are used to reduce the data flow and consequently the computational costs. In this paper we extracted landmarks from echocardiography sequence, our algorithm is based on corner extraction, and then we evaluate our algorithm with applying some test. For this purpose, we evaluated the detectors according to their repeatability, stability and landmark localization under changes in noise. © 2009 IEEE

Abstract
In this study a new method is proposed for quantification of cardiac muscle motions in echocardiography frames based on empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and manifold learning method. EMD algorithm is able to extract intrinsic mode functions (IMF) from a signal. In the first bi-dimension intrinsic mode functions (BIMF) of echocardiography frames myocardial is shown with more details than the second BIMF and the second BIMF shows more details than the third BIMF. By using manifold learning method, quantification difference between each pair of consecutive frames in the first, second and third BIMF series (similarities between the frames were extracted). Acquired trajectories of three...

Numerical investigation of Antegrade Flow effects on fl ow pulsations in Fontan operation

Abstract
This study considers blood fl ow in Total Cavopulmonary Connection (TCPC) morphology, created in Fontan surgical procedure in patients with single ventricle heart disease. Ordinary process of TCPC operation reduces pulmonary blood fl ow pulsatility; because of right ventricle being bypassed. This reduction may limit the long term outcome of Fontan circulation. There is an idea stating that keeping Main Pulmonary Artery (MPA) partially open, would increase pulmonary fl ow pulsations. MPA gets closed in ordinary TCPC operation. The purpose of current study is to verify effects of Antegrade Flow (AF) coming through stenosed MPA on pulmonary fl ow pulsations, by means of Computational Fluid...

Abstract
Purpose: Cardiac multimodal image fusion can offer an image with various types of information in a single image. Many coronary stenosis, which are anatomically clear, are not functionally significant. The treatment of such kind of stenosis can cause irreversible effects on the patient. Thus, choosing the best treatment planning depend on anatomical and functional information is very beneficial. Methods: An algorithm for the fusion of coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) as an anatomical and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) as a functional modality is presented. CCTA and TTE are temporally registered using manifold learning. A pattern search optimization algorithm, using...
Possible role for growth hormone in suppressing acylated ghrelin and hunger ratings during and after intermittent exercise of different intensities in obese individuals
, Article Acta Medica Iranica ; Vol. 52, Issue. 1 , 2014 , pp. 29-37 ; ISSN: 1735-9694 ; Kordi, M. R ; Taghikhani, M ; Ravasi, A. A ; Gaeini, A. A ; Tabrizi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
Body weight is influenced by both food intake and energy expenditure. Acylated ghrelin enhances appetite, and its circulating level is suppressed by Growth Hormone. Data on the acylated ghrelin responses to exercise of different intensities in obese individuals are currently not available. This study examined the effects of an intermittent exercise protocol on acylated ghrelin levels and hunger ratings in obese people. Nine inactive male ran on the treadmill at 0900 with progressive intensities of 50, 60, 70, and 80% of VO2max for 10, 10, 5, and 2 min respectively. Blood samples were collected before the exercise at 0845 (-15 min as the resting values), after each workload (10, 23, 31, and...

Abstract
In this paper, an efficient approach for ultrasonic object segmentation with special application for left ventricle segmentation in echocardiography images is proposed. At first, an efficient hybrid trend for ultrasonic image edge detection is suggested. Then, a modified level set approach is introduced based on the extracted edges and the computed probabilistic map as the stopping criteria for the contour evolution. Both synthetic and clinical images are utilized as validation measures with respect to the prior techniques which indicate outperform results quantitatively and qualitatively. Left ventricle segmentation using proposed method illustrates expert-approved performance, providing a...
